THE BOOK for sugar industry

This book, or should I say Encyclopedia, is the best book on the sugar industry ever written. It describes in detail each and every part of a Sugar industry, with useful information and guide to designers and constructers. Ther is no doubt to it, every person in the industry uses it. Both the english and French versions are the most complete literature that one may expect. But the price is still too high to be available to engineers and technicians.
It is useful to both the one working in a sugar factory and the one who designs and constructs the apparatus.
One point that may be added for futur editions is a small chapter on structural steel work that exist in a sugar factory, which constitute an important % of the investment.

Too good but too high!

Actually, I don't own one but our ISO 9000 group has one, second edition. The contents are interesting and realistic in nature. Since I am documenting procedures for our ISO certification, I wish I could have one for my own reference but the price is too high. Perhaps you can come up with a photocopied version at a lower price for us technical people to have one. This book will be of great help in our company's drive for ISO 9000 certification! Thanks a lot!

Sound Familar?

It would probably be useful to potential readers to explain what this book is not before discussing what it is. It is not a "secret history" in any sense nor is it a diatribe against either the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC) or the Executive Branch of government. The book is a sober and sobering history of how the U.S. has dealt with issues of State and non-State terrorism from World War II through the catastrophe of September 11 2001. Naftali also does a great service by noting the obvious similarities between the operating techniques of counter-Espionage and counter Terrorism (especially domestic).

In this book Naftali chronicles the failure of our political and national security systems to effectively protect American lives and property from terrorist threats. Naftali does record those rare successes against individual terrorists such as Abu Nidal, but the thrust of his book is that on the whole we have had difficulty countering terrorism in any form. He gives a fairly detailed case study of the series of terrorist attacks against U.S. personal in Lebanon during 1983-1984. The perpetrators of these attacks were members of Hezbollah, a Shia terrorist organization sponsored by Iran and enabled by Syria. In the case of the bombing of the U.S. Beirut Embassy in 1984 as it turned out, if the CIA had reviewed its available evidence, especially imagery they would have seen that a mock up of the U.S. Embassy had been constructed and was being used to train for car bomb attacks against the real thing. This is not a matter of "connecting the dots"; it is a matter of knowing the target (in this case Hezbollah) and building rational indications lists. In the fallout from this series of disasters, the redoubtable Charlie Allen, a long time CIA employee, called attention to the existence of this imagery (hind site is always 20/20). As a result Allen was named the new National Intelligence Officer (NIO) for counter-Terrorism. To his credit, Allen almost immediately tried to make information sharing a part of IC culture by connecting all concerned agencies directly with the CIA center for photo interpretation. Needless to say the IC culture than as now was largely opposed to sharing anything and Allen's efforts came to naught. In the couple of chapters of this book Naftali does chronicle the efforts by the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations to deal with the terrorist threat posed by the Osama bin Laden movement. Neither comes off very well in this, but the Bush administration comes off as the most indifferent, at least prior to 9/11.

This reviewer would recommend that prior to reading this book; interested readers should read "Inside Terrorism" by Bruce Hoffman to understand all the different manifestation of terrorism.

Robust review of history of U.S. counterterrorism policy

While many recent works on terrorism focus almost exclusively on the most recent incarnation (Islamic jihadists), Naftali reviews the much broader historical counterterrorism landscape. Perhaps most interesting is the historical parallel he draws between the difficult decisions the Clinton and Bush II administrations faced prior to 9-11 and those faced by the Johnson and Nixon administrations. The author does a tremendous job of reinforcing that terrorism and U.S. efforts to combat it are nothing new, and that policymakers often find themselves faced with the same difficult decisions and repeating the same mistakes as their predecessors. Those readers who wish to read more than this book offers about counterterrorism policy since the late 1990s should read Steve Coll's Ghost Wars and Peter Bergen's Holy War, Inc.

It was an interesting read as the topic ranged from WWII on to 9/11, (mainly international terrorism as he does touch on the 1970’s rash of hijackings but does not discuss the domestic terrorism of that time).
I have to point out some major mistakes though, such as:

• Naftali mistook 9/11 flight 93 (which crashed in Pennsylvania) as "Flight 83."

• Naftali stated that terrorist Abu Nidal died of “natural causes” in Baghdad, (Nidal, who had many enemies including mainstream PLO, was shot in Baghdad in 2002).

• Naftali stated that aircraft from the USS Vincennes shot down Iranian airbus 655 in 1988. The fact is that a surface to air missile was launched from the Vincennes.

• Naftali also mistakes al-Qai’da terrorist “Abu Zubayday for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Zubaydah, (really more of a freelancer than al-Qai’da), worked as the gate keeper to Afghan based terrorist camps-including bin Laden’s camps. Naftali states it was Zubaydah who escaped to Iraq and set up a resistance to US forces in 2003. Zubayday was captured in March 2002, Zarqawi, the leader (of what is now ISIS), was killed by US forces in 2006.

I think they were major mistakes, but found the book entertaining regardless.

A Pleasure for Numerical Applications!

This book is fantastic for learning C++ using numerical-analytic examples. It is not exactly an easy introduction to the C++ language, which is admittedly vast and profound. Especially someone with little or no programming background would be rather disappointed with it.

I recommend coming to it after doing a first course in C++ itself using something like Deitel & Deitel (C++ How to Program) or Ivor Horton's Beginning C++. Once that preparation is in place, this book will not only provide a very useful revision of the basics (first learnt elsewhere), but also prove exceedingly successful in teaching numerical applications. C++ is so vast that it is impossible to digest many of its aspects from a single source only. Therefore, the "introductory" tone of the author is incredibly useful (for a second pass, I must stress).

Somewhat equal weight is given to both the procedural and object-oriented aspects of the language with coverage of legacy C concepts such as function pointers as well as state of the art OO concepts like encapsulation, inheritance, overloading. Moreover, there are dedicated chapters to such quintessentially C++ issues as namespaces, exception handling and STL. Last but not least, the treatment is fully ANSI/ISO compliant, so the code should run on most modern compilers.

A broad menu of numerical examples are illustrated ranging from simple arithmetic to root-finding, interpolation and matrix-algebra based computations. Most exercises are do-able and quite illuminating.

Hunt - Sanctuary of the Chosen - a Good Read

A very good read. The characters are interesting. The tale is absorbing. It is a sequel to The Archon Conspiracy, which was also marketed as the "Mind Invaders" -- or a title that is very similar to that. The Sanctuary of the Chosen meshes with The Archon Conspiracy (Mind Invaders) rather than being a strict sequel, but this seems to work well.

I enjoyed the book. Dave Hunt is always thought provoking, whether he is writing fiction or non-fiction.

After reading this you will realize how many authors have tried making the same type of book with less success. Since Dave Hunt only wrote two novels, I am surprised at how good the wording and the pace are. This book better than the mind invaders prequel, and one of the few books I have been able to read more than once. Even after 24 years this is still one of my favorite books.

The usual Dave Hunt excellence!

This is very much up to Dave Hunt's usual standard in writing. It is an action packed novel, yet....how near truth. This is apparently the second in a series but I never knew about the first one. This stands alone just fine but I *will* be reading his other. Mostly I've read Mr. Hunt's non-fiction, which is concise and well researched. Whether or not you are a child of the cold war, I believe you will enjoy this book.

The best GNR book not written by a band member

This book is an essential must-read for anyone who is a fan of Guns N' Roses.

At first I was highly sceptical, there have been some truly terrible books written about this band in the past, but this one proved to be the exception to the rule.

The book is 348 pages long, excellent quality and every page has something of interest to GNR fans, either pictures or stories about the bands formation, or both. Much of it you will not find anywhere else, either online, on TV or in other books (in some cases including Slash's autobiography). Like most GNR books it claims to have stories and interview sections with friends of the band, but unlike most GNR books the people interviewed here really did know the band, and in many cases still do. Many of them played with one or more band members as they were starting out, others were friends throughout the bands formative years. There are none of the typical dodgy interviews with someone who lived down the street from Axl for a month, or went to Slash's high school just 1 year after he left, it's all the real deal.
It also includes a lot of information from the band members themselves, some of it contributed specially for the book.

And the pictures are all up to the same high standard as the text. No fuzzy re-prints of magazine shots, nothing stolen from websites or videos, it's all excellent quality and predominantly from the personal collections of the same friends and band mates who contributed the text.

As if that's not enough the book also includes a code that gives you access to audio and video recordings and more photos via a website. Again it's all great quality and stuff you're extremely unlikely to have seen before.

In short this is the sort of book that most band biographers wish they could have written and a must have for all GNR fans. It's just a shame so many other people got there first and did such a bad job of it.

Very cool book

Any GN'R fan should own this book. Tons of pictures tell the story of the rise of a great band who made, in my humble opinion, the best rock record of all time. Too bad they couldn't hold it together, but if you read Slash's book you can understand why. Reckless Road is a nice companion to that book.

If there's one thing that could have been improved with this project, it would be spelling. Countless times it says "here" when it should be "hear," or "then" instead of "than." Sort of annoying, but the pictures are really what it's all about. And most of these pictures are truly worth a thousand words, so they more than make up for the typos.

Great book and I would highly recommend it.

Excellent book, but don't forget... IT IS ENHANCED!

I picked up this book a few weeks back and loved it. I did time in Hollywood around that time and seeing familiar faces telling the story was quite fun. Canter did an AMAZING job documenting his friend Saul's band...

BUT do not forget, this book is ENHANCED! I did it today and it was fabulous... Buy the book, get your password, go to the website and viola! You can read every page and as you do see video interviews with Slash, Duff, Adler and all of the inner circle... PLUS as you read about all of the first shows you get to HEAR the actual performances! Read about the first time "Jungle" or "Rocket Queen" or "Nighttrain" was performed AND you get to hear it as well.

Nicely done, Marc! Well worth the price of admission.

DNF: just because he's hot doesn't mean he's nice

DNF: I stopped at 38%. I got this because it was for free and figured I'd try it out. After 38%, I don't even want to read any more to see how it turns out even if this is a novella.

I just couldn't get past how rude "He/Sir" was and I find the need for "liquid courage" by the heroines of these stories to be ridiculous. Mac might try to come off as strong and confident, but needs the drinks to talk to him. That's ridiculous. If a guy talked to me like that, I'd walk away.

She's considering going home with him eventhough she doesn't even know his name. From the other reviews, apparently, his name is never revealed. He talks to her in a demeaning way. Even if he likes to be dominant, there should still be a level of respect, love, and understanding.

Loved it

This is a short story that could easily have been longer. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I read this while trying to stay awake during the night. I ended up wide awake & wishing it was longer.
Be warned this has explicit sex scenes & BDSM.
This author never fails to captivate my attention. I'm always waiting for her next book to come out. I've read several of hers now & she hasn't disappointed me yet.

Short, hot and steamy!

This quickie was intriguing and caught my attention right off the bat. For it being so short, it was set up well and actually had quite a bit of story to it! The sex was steamy, but it was almost too domineering at points between people I didn't enough about, nor did they know each other. I loved the epilogue, it wrapped it all up- but still left me going come on! Great job!

As Good As It Gets

I've read three excellent books so far, this being the most recent. Mike Stavrou's "Mixing With Your Mind" really opened up my understanding of the importance of listening; make no mistake, however, there is plenty of technical and cerebral information there (the best compressor set-up explanation I've seen), but it laid a foundation that I don't think can be gotten anywhere else, except perhaps if I had been lucky enough to sit alongside of someone like Stav. I can't stress enough what Stav's book brought to the table as both a philosophical foundation and technical knowledge, he has a unique way of painting a picture that is exceptional. I next read Mike Senior's "Mixing Secrets", which took me to an amazing level of practical knowledge in all respects of mixing. Too quantify what I learned from Mike Senior would take a book in itself, trust me, you want his book, and you equally want Bobby Owsinski's. Bobby Owsinski's "The Mixing Engineer's Handbook" is in the same vein as Mike Senior, but with a different slant of approach and technical knowledge, and it brought a rounding of the big picture. I can't say one is better than the other, the value Mike Senior and Bobby Owsinski brought as a whole is the point and these two books complement each other perfectly. Owsinksi's interviews with the "best of the best" in the business he provides in the last section of the book is packed with practical knowledge and the generous sharing of information by those individuals cannot be overstated. It's probably the best "interview" format I've seen, truly practical information and philosophy you can use. A huge thanks to Mike Stavrou, Mike Senior and Bobby Owsinski, these guys love what they do, they're about the love, and it shows.

No Serious Mixer Should Be Without This Book

Have always loved Bobby Owsinski, subscribe to his mailing lists, purchased his Mixing Tricks course, and now have the handbook that no serious mixer should be without. It's a great book that you'll refer to again and again. My only suggestion would be to offer this in a spiral binding so it can be used easily on a mixing console. I took it in and had it bound that way, but would be nice if it came that way.

Let Truth Be The Prejudice documents the life and work of W. Eugene Smith, a man whose work expanded the range and depth of photography, bringing new aesthetic and moral power to the photo essay. Smith was born in 1918 in Wichita, Kansas, and raised according to traditional American values, believing in the nobility of America and the injustice of war. He began taking pictures with his mother's camera while still a boy and continued this practice throughout his schooling. In 1937 his burning ambition took him to New York City, where his rise as a professional photographer was meteoric.

Before he was twenty-one, Smith had placed hundreds of photographs in the major picture magazines of the time. Dramatic composition, a hard-edged brilliance, and a mastery of lighting were evident even in this early work. But the moment of true ground-breaking would occur during World War II. It was when Smith went ashore with the Marines at Saipan, Guam, and Iwo Jima that his work and his sense of moral responsibility came together. He wrote: "Each time I pressed the shutter release it was a shouted condemnation hurled with the hope that they might echo through the minds of men in the future-- causing them caution and remembrance and realization." Breaking from the concerns of the mass media, his personal priorities were born. Smith's war photographs earned him repeated and justified comparisons to Mathew Brady. His coverage of American prisoner-of-war camps helped convince the Japanese that their fears were exaggerated, and stopped the suicide of thousands of terrified citizens upon the advance of American troops. This would not be the last time that Smith's work would change as well as document history.

After the war, Smith became a staff photographer at Life magazine, where he created many of his most famous photographs. The essays "Country Doctor" and "Nurse Midwife" influenced an entire generation. Smith moved from mine villages in Great Britain to Albert Schweitzer in French Equatorial Africa to a sweeping study of Spanish village life. At a meeting of the Ku Klux Klan he created haunting images of hatred, fear, and bigotry, which beautifully counterpoint the humanity of his great Life0 essays. Smith also showed his skill at portraiture, shooting many of the luminaries of the time.

His frustrations with commercial publishing finally led to a split with Life magazine in 1954, a true case of "artistic differences." He devoted his remaining twenty-four years to independent projects. It was a period of intense personal suffering and poverty. During these years he pushed one project, "Pittsburgh," virtually to the breaking point and along the way created photography's greatest urban landscape.

His last great essay, "Minamata," depicted both the human suffering caused by mercury poisoning in a Japanese industrial port, and helped put an end to that pollution. A severe beating by factory thugs aggravated his already failing health and on October 15, 1978, he died. Over the span of forty driven years, Smith dreamed on an epic scale and his accomplishments were heroic. He once wrote: "Never have I found the limits of the photographic potential. Every horizon, upon being reached, reveals another beckoning in the distance. Always, I am on the threshold."

Here is the definitive work on Smith's life and work, containing his major photo-essays, the portrait work, and spanning his brilliant career from his days aboard an aircraft carrier, through the breadth of Pittsburgh, to the human suffering explicit in his last great essay in Minamata. All these images have been painstakingly reproduced to insure the greatest quality in testament to Smith's genius.

Moral passion and photographic truth were inseparable to Gene Smith. He pursued both and the measure of his greatness is that he compromised neither. His achievements were realized at no small cost to himself and those around him. In the accompanying biography, "The Wounded Angel," author Ben Maddow takes the measure of the man and looks unflinchingly at the muses and demons that drove W. Eugene Smith to the fulfillment of his dream of greatness. Maddow's biography is the first published in-depth portrayal of Gene Smith's life. This survey of Smith's work is a particularly fine one, in terms of the reproduction quality, choice, and layout of images. The juxtaposition of picture groups seems to parallel the emotional upheavals and periods of calm in his life: World War II, rural America, Ku Klux Klan, Spain and Africa (Albert Schweitzer), the mammoth Pittsburgh project, gentle views from his Manhattan window, jazz artists, an unpublished Haiti essay, Japan (Minamata). The pictures (accompanied by lengthy quotations from Smith) speak eloquently of his vision, mission, and craftsmanship. Unfortunately, Maddow's essay adds far more than we need to know about Smith's personal relationships, by way of a tiresome pastiche taken from the thousands of documents at the Center for Creative Photography. (Maddow performed this same service in Edward Weston: fifty years ). The accompanying bibliography of photo essays and writings by and about Smith is very useful. Amazing book

The cover is not so enticing, with that red outline.
But the quality of the book is superb. I bought a few W. Eugene Smith's books on the same week, so I have not looked at all in detail. The print quality is very good, the paper shows very nicely the deep blacks and dark tones of Smith's photographs, without making them look dull like on lower quality books.

It is a large book with many photo essays that cover large part of Smith's career.

There is a lot of text as well. A lot of information about Smith's assignments and biography.

Really a great book I am happy to own. A great introduction to this photographer's work.

W. Eugene Smith is an amazing photographer. His photos are not just a mere representation of reality. The toning, the printing technique are as important as the framing, the composition to bring to the viewer the complex realities of life with emotion, passion, compassion.

This book is not a collection of single images, but photo essays where series of photographs can really tell a story and bring a slice of life to the viewer.

Not the best, but quality images abound.

I'm a huge fan of Gene Smith's work. it's awe inspiring, but this book isn't the best one out there. There are a lot of letters that give you insight into his world, but it is badly designed. If there were another edition released with a new designer this book could be great.

A better purchase, albeit more expensive is the 3-volume set by UT Press called W. Eugene Smith, The Big Book. Save your money and buy that. Buy this one used because there are great images in this book, but it's not worth a whole lot of dough.

W. Eugene Smith-The Man

Yet another marvelous book with superb photos of a troubled man. Smith had a rough life being broke most of the time and the injuries he received during WWII and the violence he received while covering the mercury poisoning in Japan buy the very people that caused the problem further caused him irreparable harm. Of all the photo journalist I've read about Smith was the most troubled, despondent and potentially suicidal. Nevertheless, a superb photographer going in harms way many times to capture the story. One of my heroes.
