All you need for SPI

I recently passed the SPI on my first try. The procrastinator I am, I have been out of school for 5 years, so I had to somewhat "relearn" physics. This book prepared me well. I did purchase two hours of the X-Zone, but that did not seem to help as much. You have to really understand the principles of physics to pass this test, and this book does a good job spelling it all out for you. There are helpful practice exams after each chapter. You also get access to an online practice exam, which I thought was too simplified as compared to the actual registry.

Great Physics Review!!!

This is an awesome review for the SPI exam! I recently took the exam and I studies this book all the way through. It is a very thorough review, but is not overwhelming with the amount of information. It is broken down in an easy to understand manner. It does not over exaggerate the material - it gives you the information you need to know to pass the SPI exam, so you do not waste your time studying tons of information that you never see on your exam. I really feel like this book well prepared me for my SPI exam. I felt as though the information that was on my exam was all covered in this one book. Give it a try!! You will not be disappointed!

helped me excel on the test

I just finished my test this morning and scored 644.

I did not have any guided training for this test and so needed a book that would be fairly comprehensive and yet easy to learn from. This book is about 190 pages or so and is very easy to read. I did not find myself overwhelmed or bored, nor was it too wordy. The diagrams, pictures, etc are all easy to understand and augment the points being made int eh text. The questions at the end of the chapter reinforce the concepts and key points from the chapter; they are slightly easier than the actual examination but it is not a huge difference.

For me at least, this book (read it twice) in conjunction with the ARDMS provided practice tests ($25) and reviewing the semi interactive questions was enough. Things went really quite smoothly.

I will definitely be using Steven Penny's book for the abdomen preparation too.

About the Author
Russell Napier is a consultant with CLSA writing on issues affecting global equity markets. After studying law, he began his investment career at Baillie Gifford in Edinburgh managing funds in the Japanese, then the US and finally the Asian markets. Moving to London he was responsible for managing Asian portfolios. In 1995 he relocated to Hong Kong to become the Asian strategist for CLSA. Another take on bubbles

Another classic of this type is "Manias Panics and Crashes".

This one is specific to the four big Bear markets of the last century. The author goes through each one as an example. He identifies each stage and has clippings from the markets on peoples sentiment. Shows pricings and looks for what was the best indicator at the bottom. There is no hype, predictions, or false systems in this book. It's more presenting information and presenting patterns that occured.

All the bears follow similar patterns where there is froth, leverage, money sloshing around and everything is priced up a bit. Then some triggering event happens and people either re-evaluate or are forced to change their minds on valuations. Prices drop until they hit a bottom. Things uptrend for a while even though the news is still bad.... The author goes over each bear and how it's the same and how it's different.

Until reading this book, I did not understand or even think about using commodity prices as a leading indicator. Did not know that the stock market turned up before the economy did. Did not know that the great depression involved multiple stages, an international banking crisis, and a late move to gold.

After reading this book, now when I see someone on the TV saying that "They've never seen anything like this before" about LTCM, Bear Strerns, or the price of oil or gold... I have a better perspective. When someone tells me that "the market has definately found bottom" or "Can't go down from here"... I kind of chuckle now.

I do know that when people say "This is a great time to buy stocks..." they often don't know what they're talking about, or they're making it up.

If the credit crisis worsens this year, this summer or the next may be the best buying opportunity in the US stock market in the last 30 years. Hopefully what I've read will be some help. Every downturn is different, and Banks/Fed/Investors act differently each time based on past exp and history... It may be that we've already hit bottom... It may be that nothing in this book will call the next bottom... Only time will tell.

Many won't read this book because it doesn't say "Get RICH QUICK" on the front... LOL

The history of bear and bull markets

This book is a detailed history of the financial markets in the US, particularly the 4 bear markets in the 20th century. The style is a little technical, but still fairly readable. It could have used a little more editing (typos) but it's still a well-researched and very thoughtful book.

The author's main thesis is that stock markets move from periods of overvaluation to periods of undervaluation, and that there are certain signs that can be found at the end of any bear market. This information would be extremely valuable to any serious investor - rather than listening to a lot of the chatter on the internet or on TV, which often amounts to little more than cheerleading and wishful thinking, the information in this book will help an investor analyze at what point in the bull-and-bear cycle the market is at.

Obviously a lot more money can be made when buying at the bottom of the market, and the author did extensive research to uncover the indicators of a market bottom, so that you can apply them when the time comes.

Most recent investors have only seen bull markets, and so don't recognize the signs of a real, steep bear market - often losses can exceed 50% or more, perhaps 70%. Sometimes it can take decades to recover from the losses. This book will open the eyes of anyone who has believed the mantra, "it doesn't matter when you buy, just get into the market anytime, since stocks go up forever."

All about the bear markets

This book is rare in that it examines the four greatest bear market bottoms that would have made you the most money if you would have entered them at the right time, instead of the endless books out that show how to buy the hottest stocks in a perpetual bull market. What I like about this book is that the author stays away from his own opinions and simply shows the facts by examining the Wall Street Journal articles during each of these periods, August 1921, July 1932, June 1949, and August 1982. These were the actual bottoms when the market finally began to reverse. You will surprising see that unlike common Wall Street myths the bottom is not when things are the worse and everyone has a negative outlook, actually the WSJ article show that there was hope of a turn around, volume had dried up, P/E ratios were obviously absurdly low, and car sales were beginning to pick up. You will do very well to buy and read this book and add its information to your arsenal of trading and investing. Originally published in two separate volumes (The Forgotten Arts and Forgotten Household Crafts), this book brings under one cover the wisdom of John Seymour, a well-known thinker on matters of self-sufficiency, traditional arts, and voluntary simplicity. Seymour is a utopian--he has a vision of a better world where people aren't alienated from their labors. In the introduction he writes, "Are we justified in using articles, no matter how convenient it may be for us to use them, that we know were produced in conditions which bored and even stultified the human beings who had to make them?" This question led Seymour to the research that forms the foundation of the book: rediscovering natural ways of making tools, shoes, furniture, and a variety of other items using methods that follow the grain of wood or the idiosyncrasies of a piece of stone. Seymour respects what he calls "the discipline of natural materials," and he longs for a world free of "mass produced rubbish." Chapters cover an astonishing range: from clog making to spinning to canning. Since this book is intended as a comprehensive survey, don't expect to be an expert on, say, forging metal by reading Seymour's descriptions. The "How Things Work" book for the late 19th to early 20th centuries.

This book is simply amazing. It collects within it, the major skills used to make the items one used during every-day life in colonial america and late 19th century england. Items are described in great detail, as well as the trades and craftsmen who made them. Diagrams, photos and pictures are all clear.

This book is not a how-to guide, however. You will need thorough instructions from elsewhere. What it is is an encyclopedia of sadly-forgotten trades from days when everything was made somewhere other than China.

There is indeed nothing about bookbinding as one reviewer mentioned. I was rather bummed about that as well. However, I can easily forgive this, since it's not what I would consider a "survival skill". Forgotten Arts and Crafts highlights trades that contribute to the living and surviving of daily life, rather than the extras such as reading, music, etc, for the most part. Coopers, tanners, butter-making, the care and tending of an old household pre-vaccum and washing, saddle-making, carpentry, farriers and blacksmiths, spinners, weavers, carpenters, etc... were all required to merely subsist in ye old days when everyone in a town or village was generally a deeply-skilled craftsman...those days before we had cars and super-transmorgrified mega-marts. As sad as it makes me, a devopted book-lover, literacy and thus the making of books were not of that skill set.

Anyway, this is a most excellent book for those interested in a project-starting book for ideas, as well as for writers, researchers, and history buffs of all kinds. Heck, *I* don't like history and I loved this one. Fascinating stuff.

Wonderful skills, sadly forgotten

This book is filled to the brim with descriptions on how people have produced materials for their every need before being replaced by inferior (but cheap) mass produced items. Baskets, walls, barrels, baking, smithing, this book has them all--with the unfortunate excepting of bookbinding. Not heavy on the detail side, instead giving a broad scope of now lost skills--accompanied by photographs, excellent drawings, and anecdotes that reveal the warm personality of the author. A wonderful addition to the library of anyone who's ever thought "What happened to quality? Maybe cheaper isn't better!"

Do Not Time Travel Without This Book!

I have been having a great run on historical luck lately, finding books on everyday life of bygone days. The Forgotten Arts and Crafts by John Seymour is the latest in a line of excellent social history books that I have recently acquired, and I must say, for any historian - beginner or seasoned - this book is an absolute must. Broken into two parts (Forgotten Arts and Forgotten Household Crafts), detailed information on how survival in the past was accomplished by our ancestors is given, written in a very entertaining and easy to read style using both modern and period directions. Sketches and photographs enhance the text greatly, giving the reader full understanding of the subject studied - and the subjects are too numerous to list here. But just to name a few of the occupations and survival crafts from the first half: blacksmithing, becoming a wheelwright, well digging, chair making, coopering, working a millstone, basketry, building an actual wooden house, ladder making - all shown how it was done in an era long past.
The second part of the book details the essentials of home life, such as herb and spice usage, drying and smoking meat, cooking in an open hearth or on a range, making lye and soap, the heating of one's home, the many ways of lighting your home, bathing and toiletry, dyeing, spinning... and on and on and on.
Put the two chapters together and you have quite an overview for living in the past!
Of course, there are other books out there that will give you a "how-to" in much greater detail - this book is more of an aerial perspective, giving the reader a strong idea of life in the past.
DK Publishing has never let me down yet - they seem to have the same passion for history as I do. Lucky for all of us they get the information out there for all to see.
A little pricey, but, to me, well worth it.

Great book!

This is a great book for those who want to practice robotic concepts in MATLAB! The (free) robotics toolbox is a great tool to work with manipulators, and the book has several examples with real robots (like the famous PUMA). It also has some useful tools for mobile robots, but it only deals with the car-like and the quadrotor models. It misses the widely applied unicycle model, although it is ease to adapt the toolbox to work with the unicycle as well.
I didn't have time to get to the machine vision part, but the final part of the book unites robotics and machine vision, dealing with visual control for robots.
I think it is a very nice book for everybody that works with robotics!

A published robotics researcher myself, I find this is one of the most useful books I've come across. It excels in detailing both algorithm fundamentals and their actual implementations. The accompanying MATLAB toolbox is thorough, readable, and efficient.
