Quite good and informing

Not a bad book at all! I recommend it. I liked the sneak peek into Episode III (yes, I'm spoiled on it already) and seeing the internal workings of the ships was nice.

Here were my frustrations.

Okay, for starters, the inclusion of two pages devoted to Yoda's escape pods is criminal. Unless these escape pods end up doing like the same as the Jedi Interceptors (which I still don't like nearly as much as the Jedi Starfighters from AotC) in the movie in terms of how big of a role they play, which I doubt, they weren't needed. Nobody really cares, I think, what internal luxuries were afforded to Yoda in his tiny little Wookiee escape pod for the few seconds that it features on-screen. If they try to script Yoda's pod escaping from Kashyyyk into a battle sequence in the upper atmosphere or in space, it would be inane. The thing about Dagobah being one of the lost planets is interesting, though. Car'das must have slipped word of the name to someone after he escaped from that Bpfassh Dark Jedi. Anyway, it would have been a better use of page space, I think, to have Bail's speeder, or Padm�'s yacht, or the AT-PW or whatever it's called, or just something besides boring escape pods, the Star Wars equivalent of life rafts!

Also I noticed that it wasn't quite as engaging as the other Cross-Sections before it, which showed you the characters and the key places that the characters explored, etc.

However, all in all, it was a good and informing read, with some deliciously sinister backstory for the Invisible Hand and some explanation as to how the Venator Star Destroyer and the ARC-170 fit into their other Expanded Universe "cousins" (I think I even saw a reference to the Planetary Fighter from that old PC space flight sim, X-wing Alliance, in there!)

An Excellent Work of Star Wars Art

STAR WARS: REVENGE OF THE SITH - INCREDIBLE CROSS-SECTIONS is so visually captivating and interesting that I don't quite know how to begin describing it. The incredibly detailed, superbly painted cutaways of the major vehicles and vessels of STAR WARS: Episode III provide for a unique experience in literature.

This book commands your attention as it forces you to soak in several intricately detailed paintings of the amazing craft of Episode III. The text that accompanies each picture provides excellent descriptions of each ship's engines, weapons systems, radiation, shielding, etc. and shows you how each individual part of the ship works. (The descriptions go in-depth so far, in fact, that they almost leave me wondering if any of the technology of STAR WARS might be possible. The credit for this must go to the author's degree in theoretical astrophysics.) Each craft also has a "Data File" text box for a quick analysis of the manufacturer, dimensions, hyperdrive, and maximum speed of the specific vehicle.

In contrast to all of the pros, I do have a couple of cons: grammar in some parts of the book is not quite as good as it should be for such a major work. Also, I found that beneath the protective jacket, the hardcover has little splotches of glue smeared on it. Though this isn't a problem at all for me, it might be one for someone who must have their books looking perfectly clean inside and out.

Overall, this book is an excellent work of art that is certainly worthy of STAR WARS fans' time and money. Its commitment to perfection in its utterly detailed and spectacular paintings and its very good descriptive writing easily give this book the power to hammer out its very minor flaws and earn itself 5 stars.

Mostly good, but missing some interesting vehivales

This is on the whole an excellent book that has cross-sections of almost all of the key vehicles participating in The Revenge of the Sith. Of particular interest are the cross-sections of the Vector-Class Star Destroyers and the big-wheeled infantry armored-personnel carrier. I especially like how the vehicles that appear in Return of the Sith appear outwardly to be inferior, earlier versions of vehicles that appear in Episodes 4, 5, and 6, which makes perfect sense since the vehicles in the later episodes represent a 20-year evolution of technology. One thing that doesn't make particular sense, though, are that vehicles that have such amazing propulstion technology (hyperdrives, intergalactic travel, etc.) rely on what are basically Napoleonic-era battle strategies (i.e., broadside salvoes of main armament between capital ships) rather than a more realistic strategy of using capital ships as stand-off missile-platforms or carriers for small assault craft which represent the capital ships' main striking power (as in, an aircraft carrier's fighters and attack aircraft). This is to a large extent understandable in the fictional Star Wars universe, as watching big battleships exhanging broadsides is immensely entertaining, probably moreso than watching a big, beautiful star destroyer go down because some stupid A-win crashes through its bridge (apparently, people who have mastered intergalactic travel haven't mastered the art of having backup control centers for a capital ship). It also makes sense since its more entertaining to watch X-wings and TIE fighters dogfight WWi/WWII style rather than a cold, impersonal missile-launch contest. Having said all that, I disliked how this book devoted an entire section to Yoda's escape pod but neglected to have a page for those archaic versions of the TIE fighters that escorted Emperor Palpatine's shuttle to Coruscant at the end of Return of the Sith (when a wounded Darth Vader was being wheeled into the surgery center). It would have been interesting to see a cross section of that spacecraft. Also missing was a cross section of the archaic Corellian corvette that took Bail Organa and Princess Leia to Alderran at the end of the movie, when infants Luke and Leia were split up and hidden by the surviving Jedi to keep them from Vader.

Overall a highly-interesting book that makes an airline flight or wait in the doctor's office go by very fast, but the few missing vehicles put a slight damper on it overall.

An illustrated edition of Hoffmann's earlier The New Holistic Herbal (Element, 1992), The Complete Illustrated Holistic Herbal offers a listing of over 200 herbs and detailed sections on their use in treating ailments associated with each major body system (circulatory, respiratory, digestive, nervous, reproductive, glandular, and urinary) as well as the major organs such as skin, ears, nose, and throat. Hoffmann's effort is devoted almost solely to herbs found in North America (although this is not stated anywhere), with little information on habitat, growth, and gathering and no cautions on usage. For this latter type of information, one needs to consult The Encyclopedia of Medicinal Plants, which covers herbs from all over the world, giving their location and cultivation. The encyclopedia begins with a history of herbal medicine and the herbal traditions of different cultures. Following is a visual guide to 100 key herbs from around the world, with details of their habitat, actions, traditional and current uses, latest research, preparations, cautions about usage, and useful cross references to particular ailments. In addition, there are shorter descriptions of 450 other herbs, with their history, habitat, therapeutic properties, and medicinal uses. Both books are well indexed, profusely illustrated, and authored by established authorities in the field of herbal medicine. Hands on medicinal advice for herb growers

This book is pretty enough for your coffee table. But it won't stay there. This is a dynamic book that summons herb gardeners to use the herbs they grow and herb users to grow the herbs they use. 550 herbs are profiled with photos and details of what they are used for, which part is used and how it is used. But, Mr. Chevallier doesn't stop there. He instructs you with color photographs and hands on instructions how to make the preparations needed. He not only tells you that a lotion of Lemon Balm is used for cold sores but how to make that lotion for yourself.� It covers everything from making your own tablets to making your own tonic wine. The emphasis here is on fresh from the garden potency.� There is a large chapter on specific ailments that is cross referenced with the plant pages. There is even a section on making an herbal first aid kit. This is the perfect book for those who want to rely on knowing the herb they are using is the correct one, and that it is fresh and organically grown.

Excellent but not the most recent version....

THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MEDICINAL PLANTS by Andrew Chevallier is a relatively comprehensive source of information about herbal uses for healing. This is not the most recent volume by this author, however. The 2000 version is more comprehensive and includes the most current information about research associated with herbal medicinal uses.
A less expensive and highly useful book on herbs and their uses is available from Rodale, entitled, ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERBS. The Rodale book includes information missing from this version of Chevallier's book concerning negative effectives of herbs including accidental poisoning owing to misuse or problems with plant identification. Also, Rodale has been the the organic growing business for several decades and offers information about plant horticulture. Chevallier's book is better illustrated, and filled with many colorful photographs but relatively less text (ratio of 1:4 pages for each item).
Unlike Ody's book, THE COMPLETE MEDICAL HERBAL, the Chevallier book contains information about native American herbs such as Cimicifuga Racemosa (Squawroot, Black Cohash). THE COMPLETE BOOK OF HERBS by Leslie Bremmness does not contain the comprehensive coverage of medicinal uses, but it does provide much information about medicinal and other uses such as pot pourri and sachet making, paper making, and food preparation.

About the Author
Clear Englebert began working in retail at Montgomery Ward in Huntsville, Alabama when he was fifteen. Still a teenager, he became manager of the paperback department of Bookland's largest store. At nineteen, he opened his first Huntsville bookstore, called A Good Book Store. In 1978, Clear founded Books as Seeds, and in 1989, Opening Books (a 501c3 library and gift shop). He has managed at Green Apple Books (San Francisco's largest independent bookstore), at Pearly Gates Natural Foods in Huntsville, and at Ohana O Ka `Aina Natural Foods in Kona, Hawaii.

With decades of experience in retail visual merchandizing, Clear began a career as a feng shui consultant in Hawaii in 1995. He moved to San Francisco in 1996 to further his feng shui education. His first best-selling book, Feng Shui Demystified, was originally published in 2000 and was followed the next year with Bedroom Feng Shui. They have appeared in four languages and, after a decade, have been reissued in revised and expanded editions. Clear teaches feng shui in Hawaii and California and consults on homes, gardens, and commercial spaces.

Great book that helped us make important shifts in the energy at our store

This is a really solid little book on retail feng shui, and I thought I knew a lot about feng shui - but I absolutely learned some things in this book that we have put to use in our store, and I feel they did improve the energy in the store and sales. If you manage, own or do displays in a retail store, this is a great and informative read that will have you looking at your store through new eyes, and I bet you anything you will be making a few changes afterwards! Very insightful, easy to understand, and she covers both simple/small changes and major changes you can make to correct the most common retail feng shui blunders.

A classic for a new generation

This is the book I remember from my childhood, sixty years ago. It was selected by my mother, a children's librarian.

In the past several years, I have given a copy to each of my friends in celebration of their first grandchild and it never fails to please, both for the memories it brings back and the delightful rhythms created by reading aloud. The illustrations are nostaligc but attractive to young eyes, with details to point out, a new one with each reading. And you'll be surprised at the "origins" of many familiar phrases and enjoy hearing these versions of old favorites. (It's as much fun for the grown-ups as the kids.)

I have long advocated reading to babies to get them used to having a book in front of them. If you give a child a love of reading and books, they can teach themselves anything they want to learn.

I appreciate the classics, but many of these rhymes are best left in the past.

This book contains nearly 300 rhymes, which is impressive. I purchased this for my children since I had the same book when I was little.
The familiar rhymes such as Humpty Dumpty, Pat-A-Cake, To Market, Jack, Gorgy Porgy, Three Blind Mice and many others are included. There are other rhymes I never heard of that are delightful and catchy. It is fun reading these to the kids and it has helped foster an appreciation for this type of written work.

I will say though that many of the rhymes don't make sense to the kids (ages 5 and under) and there are some that I don't feel comfortable reading to them. Times have changed for a reason and the kids don't like it when I skip.

For example, "Needles and pins... When a man marries his trouble begins."
"Three children sliding on the ice...had these children been at school...they had not then been drowned..."
"Give the barber a pinch of snuff."
"I met an old man who wouldn't say his prayers. I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs."

Others have words that mean something offensive in the present and I would prefer that they don't learn these rhymes because of the way they could be mistakenly interpreted by others (like at school without me there to explain for them).
Such as, "I like little pussy...pussy and I gently will play."
And also, "cock cock cock cock cock..."

If my children were older I could explain the significance of the rhymes and it may help them understand a bit of history, but they are too young for that discussion.

A Classic My Family Has Enjoyed For Decades

I purchased this book as a baby shower gift. I had a Mother Goose book as a child and remember my mother reading it to me. Such nostalgia and warm memories. Mother Goose has captured the imagination of children for decades and fostered a love of reading in me. When I had my daughter, who is now in her twenties, I purchased a Mother Goose for her. We spent time reading together and looking at the vintage illustrations. This book is a classic and I highly recommend it to others.

Are Yuki's monsters real or imaginary? The old school groundskeeper has reasons to believe Yuki's monsters do exist, and they seem to influence the level of disciplinary problems at school. While we never see Yuki's monsters outside of the depictions scribbled on his desk, readers share Yuki's other hallucinations. In one troubling scene, his teacher's and classmates' heads are replaced with flowers. Matsumoto brings out the surreal moments in everyday life, such as when Yuki stares into raindrops clinging to his umbrella at the distorted image of his face, replicated a hundred times. The high-contrast contour drawings are heavily influenced by French artists Moebius and Enki Bilal, with occasional nods to the psychedelic works of Milton Glaser and Peter Max. Despite occasionally experimental storytelling, the story is very accessible: Viz has faithfully reproduced the beautiful Japanese edition of the book, complete with red-trimmed pages of exceptional quality and a colorful cardboard sleeve. First Matsumoto book i read. Don't pass by

This was the first matsumoto work i read and it got me hooked to read anything else made by him because it is so different from any other manga i read. Now this can turn some people off because they are not into alternative manga but you should give it a try anyway. i wasn't into this kind of manga when i first got it and it took me a few read throughs to understand it all but the end result was me loving it and now Matsumoto being one of my favorite mangakas. for first time matsumoto readers: don't judge too harshly on matsumotos different art style or weird and abstract way of storytelling. just try to appreciate it for what it's trying to do.

11 O'Clock Comics' Fantastic Recommendation and Mine

In it's year end wrap up for 2009, 11 O'Clock Comics gave a very favorable review of Gogo Monster and based upon that I dropped it into my cart here. Thanks guys, I owe you one. Judging from the volume of reviews on Amazon, I would never have seen this otherwise and would have been sorely deprived of a piece of work that has stunned me aesthetically and engaged me on multiple literary levels. (Yes, literary levels in a manga.)

I've owned this book for about ten days and am about to start my third reread. Once is not enough to catch the nuances of the story and the detail of the art. After the second reading, I literally dreamed of this book. The last book that I can remember dreaming of was Charlotte's Web and that was 30+ years ago.

You'll need to look at the other reviews (or better yet) buy and read the book yourself, to get details regarding the plot. I want to share the pure experience of this book. What 11 O'Clock did not mention was the sheer tactile pleasure of opening and reading this work. The image above is actually a slip cover. The outside cover of the work is a colourful splash of imagination. More interesting, however, is the imprint on the outside edges of the pages. While initially, this looks like it is a red dye only, there is actually a subtle print within the reds that ties to the overall design. More than that, the edge of the pages are stuck together slightly and you have to pay attention to each page as you turn them.

The overall experience of reading this work (or mine at least) was a rememberance of things past: childhood dreams, the life altering moments of small experiences, the texture and touch of a long lost classic, and the joy of having to think of more than the words on the page to gain the most of the work. In this sense, Gogo Monster ranks in my list of some of the best literature that I read in college (thank you again Dean Grissom A Novel Approach to Life) and works of art that I have traveled thousand of miles to see and enjoy.

Take you time with this one. Every square inch of it is worth savoring.

Dream narrative

One of the best comics i've read, not just manga. Matsumoto is a master of rhytm and time. This is so cinematic somebody should make a movie out of it.
