Find a Thrilling Treasure in the DRAGON'S TRIANGLE
By Tinfoot
Want it all? Exotic chase scenes, deadly encompassing conspiracies, hidden war treasures, dastardly compelling villians, dark family secrets, witty one liners and a touch of steamy sex? DRAGON'S TRIANGLE struck me as sharing plot elements of Neal Stephenson's genre defining CRYPTONOMICON and action techniques of Ian Fleming's legendary international spy thrillers, giving it all in one non-stop go-go-go.

Christine Kling has included all the standard elements that makes an Action Thriller a real action thriller. Some more jaded readers may roll their eyes at the usual plot devices, but these devices are seamlessly interlocking with action, dialogue, characterization, and internal polish; no one can come away without the feeling one just witnessed within the theatre of imagination a truly worthy thriller, complete with the unexpected twist. Fluidly written with just enough technical jargon and accurate description to entice but without mind-numbing details to boggle the understanding or verbose word paintings to obstruct the pacing, Kling shows a depth of research that fits all the disparate story lines into a single cohesive, satisfying end. The novel itself is so fast paced that I finished it in seven hours, even with an after-lunch nap, but at the same time compelling enough to place it with my select number of novels that I will read again.

At the time I had entered into the high adventures of Riley and her comrades, I had no clue there was a preceeding novel, THE CIRCLE OF BONES. However, speaking as one who has always felt utterly compelled to read a series in order, I felt quite comfortable with DRAGON'S TRIANGLE as a stand-alone novel. The pre-existing complexity of the various characters' background gave rise to the impression of another novel, but continuing plots are melded into DRAGON'S TRIANGLE with a robust integration, never vague or partial, never requiring a prior knowledge as a "needful thing." I count this approach as added laurels to Kling's achievement; the easy assumption that one has followed from the beginning is a very common and sometimes dissuading one for new readers.

There were some small odd bits in the story, such as a chronological error concerning ship time (i.e. 0100 when the author obviously meant 1300), brief puzzling action choices (the heroine is in the midst of sabotaging with her bra- and takes time to do what? Okay...), and an intimate scene that wasn't graphic but still torrid, resulting in silly juvenile sexual innuendos sprinkled throughout the remainder of the novel. Yet aside from all these minor points, Kling has crafted an excellent entertainment, one that any fan of the genre will find fulfilling, perhaps even tongue-in-cheek amusing.

Didn't Work For Me
By Darcia Helle
This book did not work for me at all. My complaints are many:

First, there is a complete lack of character development. I had no idea who these character were or what drove their behavior. We have a lot of viewpoint characters, which likely contributes to this problem. We don't go deep into any character, but instead jump endlessly from one to another.

The characters' behavior often felt contrived, silly, and unrealistic. I don't want to give spoilers, so I'll just say that Riley's reactions to certain situations had me rolling my eyes. The "bad guys" were cardboard stereotypes with a network of similar stereotypical bad guys.

The plot was overly complicated, convoluted, and often far too convenient. There were a lot of near captures, escapes, running away, and chasing. Whenever one lost another, some other character would step in and conveniently give away the new location for no plausible reason. This didn't take place within a small town or even large city, but across countries and oceans. Yet there seemed no safe place to hide.

This is really two stories in one, with a back-and-forth switch to an event unraveling during the war in 1945. This historical aspect is really the only part I enjoyed. That being said, I think it was too much. While I respect the author's ambition, this was not simple flashbacks in order to provide history. This was a complete novel on its own, with its own characters, motivations, and plot. Even though the issues from the past entered into the present day story, the transitions felt disjointed, as if I was reading a historical novel at one moment and a modern adventure the next.

I have no doubt that the author put a lot of time and effort into researching this story. And the narrative style of her writing is well done and easy to read. I just could not find anything more than that to appreciate about this book.

I didn't read Book 1 of the series and I followed this story pretty well. I enjoyed the exotic places in the story and the adventure. Historical components of the story were interwoven and they added a lot.
Riley is lured to Thailand to find out about her grandfather, who disappeared in WWII. There she meets Irv (PeeWee) and is chased about the city. Then someone helps her out of a jam and now they are both being chased. The bad guys are very bad. There is always an ulterior motive to everything. I will definitely keep an eye out for more books by this author.
