Mindset Matters

After reading just two chapters of this book, I knew it was going to be a winner. I therefore decided to put a highly recommend post for the book on two entrepreneur listservs I belong to. The remainder of the book did not disappoint me either.

I highly recommend this book for several reasons:

First and foremost, this book is about entrepreneurial mindset or frame of mind. This book is not about how to run a business. I found this perspective particularly valuable as I am currently personally shifting my mindset from that of being an employee to that of an entrepreneur.

Secondly, this book looks at the changing nature of the U.S. economy and how entrepreneurs must position themselves for success today and in the future. In this regard, I was reminded of the book title, What Got You Here, Won't Get You There

Thirdly is the discussion surrounding the Business- Investor Triangle which illustrates the 8 Integrities of Business. While this concept might not be new to some readers, what makes this information valuable is the discussion regarding how the entrepreneur should approach the triangle.

Finally, there is the discussion about what it takes for the entrepreneur to move from self employment to a business status as defined by Robert Kiyosaki's CASHFLOW Quadrants.

I found the book to be a quick, engaging read. Based on their experiences, Trump and Kiyosaki have identified five key factors of entrepreneur success. Each of the key success factors is a chapter in the book. Trump and Kiyosaki believe that to achieve success, today's entrepreneurs must master all five factors or attributes.

The five attributes are:
* Strength of Character
* FOCUS
* Relationships
* The Little Things

Having studied entrepreneurship to the extent I have, I now appreciate that becoming a successful entrepreneur involves four things:
1. Mindset
2. Product
3. Business systems
4. Capital

When it comes to mindset, I believe this book does a great job covering the topic. If you are an entrepreneur or want to be one, then I would highly encourage you to make this book one of your must reads in 2012.

Same old routine...

It may look like a fresh book filled with new ideas to anyone who's just discovered Trump or Kiyosaki; Those who read their previous titles, there's hardly anything new. The book still has value, good ideas and refreshers, but I'm starting to think that all they are doing is luring you in with a new shiny cover and a promise that you will discover something new. Some will be gullible enough to fall for this trap. Not a bad read, but it sure does look like they are not even trying any more. They both made good brands out of their names. They will milk that cow until it's dead.

Reading the Midas Touch

I have been reading Kiyosaki's books all along since Rich Dad Poor Dad and following his development as he has come along. His teaming up with Donald Trump in his Midas Touch brought together a fantastic set of "wiggy information" which to my way of thinking is one of the greatest books to date on learning to get out of the rat race. Please congratulate them both for me and send them a "Feliz Navidad" from down Mexico way. And please congratulate yourselves (Amazon) on fast efficient courteous service. God Bless you all ! A graphic novel with laugh out loud charm

Cartoonish James Kochalka's are a delight. They juxtapose the naive kitty Peanut Butter and the obnoxious, untrustworthy crow Jeremy.

Even though she's just a normal sleepy housecat, Peanut Butter has delusions of being an office worker filing papers on the Flumdummer account. She's prone to wearing hats and ties.

Jeremy is the hateful crow that lives in a nest outside Peanut Butter's window. Jeremy will do anything to steal a hat. In their first meeting, he tricks Peanut Butter into buying his nest with a "million dollar view" for a million dollars. When she protests that she doesn't have any dollars, he throws a fit.

Some scenes can be mildly disturbing -- like the incident where Jeremy offers to help Peanut Butter remove her hat that's stuck over her eyes by shooting her with a handgun. Luckily, she escapes unharmed.

I particularly like one-page introductions that Kochalka has drawn to introduce each story. For the longest story, Peanut Butter warns that maybe you should pee before you start it. Jeremy adds, "If you're a baby!"

It's really just impossible to describe the unique appeal of this book. Use the "Search Inside" to get a peek.

Peanut Butter and Jeremy, a classic story of an overtly sweet cat befriending a bitter crow. I love this book, it is charming and silly. James Kochalka does some of his best work through cats.

This is book was not written for children. I was appalled by another parent's warning, "Don't be fooled by the cute cat on the cover and get this book for your child." People who buy books for their kids based on the cover are just as bad as people who take six year olds to see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (just because they think it's a kid's book). As a parent, I think it's shameful the way some people go on auto pilot then get offended by what their children are exposed to. Your JOB is to know what your kids are reading, watching, doing. That's your JOB.

Anyway, sorry to everyone else. This book is great. It's light and refreshing and makes me happy to be alive.

A crow with an attitude and a cat with a big heart

Here's a graphic novel that is a lot of fun and is appropriate for younger kids! Peanutbutter is a cat with a job--she often "works" at filing papers, sorting accounts and general office management for her "boss." Jeremy is a crow who lives outside Peanutbutter's house...er..."office"--he's mean and crude, but Peanutbutter calls him her best friend. Both are typical representations of the creatures they portray, but they also have their own personalities. The book is divided into several short stories, with Peanutbutter and Jeremy introducing each one. The black and white drawings are simple and expressive, and the text is easy to read and page design is easy to follow. Recommended especially for cat lovers!

I began writing Guided Destiny as a form of therapy to help me to cope with the loss of my son. I wanted to remember every aspect of his remarkable life and the journey he took us on. Never before had I met someone so astonishing. To be his parent was a true honor.

The first days of writing were filled with tears. Then as the days progressed I felt as if we were reliving his life together. What I did not expect to happen were the words that appeared on the paper. Words, that were not mine, words I believe came through the soul of my son through my fingers onto the keys.

Each day as I typed his biography he shared with me the truth of human existence. I learned of the spiritual realm and the eternal life of the soul encased in each and every human body.

His words awakened the soul within me; the connection between us grew even stronger. The purpose of his existence became more and more apparent with each consecutive chapter. He taught me about the levels of the souls in the universe. A soul is made up of energy and energy cannot die. Most religions confirm that a soul never dies. What I learned were the many lives of souls--reincarnation.

Each time a soul returns to earth for a learning experience it advances. The more advanced the soul the more open-minded to the entire concept. Soul memory allows that soul to accept, learn, love, and grow. A lower level soul, or a newcomer to earth, may be more selfish, close-minded, and incapable of understanding much about its existence, being resistant to the entire concept of who he is, where he came from, and to where he will return.

Many will read this book and think they do not understand or believe, but an awakening will take place on a soul level. A necessary lesson will be learned whether it is consciously acknowledged or not.

Living life with a child prodigy caused us to be open and accepting of the uniqueness of each and every human being. His lesson on earth was minor compared to his teachings in this book. I now know we were together before we came to earth, that we shared life on earth and we will be together again when we leave this earth--a full circle of love.

The book is comprised of two parts, the true biography of Brandenn Bremmer and his spiritual message written in italics.

disturbing

I remember being fascinated by Brandenn Bremmer when I read a long profile the New Yorker did on him after his death. In the article, I was especially struck by how much in denial his parents were when it came to Brandenn. However, the article came out less than a year after Brandenn's suicide, so I couldn't really judge them too harshly. Plus, both the Bremmers complained about the article, saying afterward that they had been misquoted. So I was interested to see what Patricia Bremmer would say about her son all these years later, in her own words.

Well.... to tell the truth, the Bremmers came off a lot better in the New Yorker than they do here. In this book, Patricia goes past simple denial and into straight-up delusional territory. In the New Yorker, Patricia and Martin talked about how they thought Brandenn was an "indigo child." In Guided Destiny, Patricia goes one further and writes about how Brandenn is actually a spiritual being/angel named Tobias who is SO much better and more enlightened and more intelligent than every single person on the planet. *Everything* that Brandenn does is chalked up to Tobias' presence. Example: Brandenn originally used to be simply Branden, until he entered an extra N on the computer at two years old. This was apparently Tobias' way of testing the Bremmers to see if they'd accept the change, which would tell him if they would allow Branden(n) the freedom to grow. And so on.

At times, I felt that some of the things that Patricia wrote were passive-aggressive shots against the New Yorker article in an attempt to refute it. For example, the New Yorker talked to one of Brandenn's gifted peers (called simply "K."), who mentioned that Brandenn had written her several emails where he talked about being depressed and being angry at his parents. Patricia implies in the book that this is all due to the K.'s corrupting influence. According to her, Brandenn NEVER complained about anything, ever, until he started corresponding with K. When K. started complaining about her parents first, that's when Brandenn started complaining too. Because, you see, Brandenn is just so empathetic and in tune with other people that he will mirror what everyone else does. Somehow Patricia manages to turn even a teenager's normal complaints and angst into an example of how Brandenn Bremmer is just so much more special and better than you.

According to the book, Brandenn's suicide is chalked up to Tobias finally deciding that the time is right to leave his earthly body. The New Yorker mentions that Brandenn decided to kill himself because he knew that other people needed his help (i.e. his organs) and that his spiritual purpose in life was fulfilled by his death. I know that people can tell themselves all sorts of things to cope with a loved one's suicide, but the sheer scope of this particular delusion is staggering.

In short, this book is highly disturbing as it plays out as some twisted fantasy that the Bremmers have built up around their son. (Well, at least Patricia - I guess I can't speak for Martin Bremmer, who didn't write this.) They've built him up, quite literally, into a supernatural being. Patricia even compares him to Jesus! This is made all the more sadder when it means that the boy who Brandenn really was - and it sounds like he was a remarkable child indeed - has been forgotten amidst all the hyperbolic rhapsodizing. At the same time, I think I walked away feeling even sorrier for the Bremmers than I had before. I imagine that one never gets over the loss of a child, and this book only highlights that aspect.

Update, July 20: Hmm, looks like my original review vanished. But I had a copy. Well, I'm looking forward to Brandenn's family and friends voting down this review, too.

Hmmmm........

My sincere condolences to the Bremmers. Parents who lose a child deserve A LOT of leeway as no punishment could be worse than this. And in their way, the Bremmers loved their boy very much. But I can't help but feel Patricia Bremmer needs serious help and I'm not saying that to be mean. All bereaved parents need help but Patricia needs it far more than most. And I can't help but feel deeply pained for Brandenn. Living up to his parents unspoken expectations (and the hugest expectations that EVER EXISTED) must have been so painful as he got older (but of course he was implicitly not allowed to express that pain as it would have been a sign that he was not their perfect boy). He was a very smart, very good boy. He was even exceptional, but no more so than millions of others. The deification (literally!) of this lovely boy is really distressing to witness. But the author is too deeply entrenched in this point of view.

On a MUCH lesser scale my mother did this to me. I was the most perfect child ever (her point of view) -- brilliant, funny, talented and kind (her point of view) and her constant loving companion (I was, in reality, a perfectly ordinary, slightly above average kid, with intellectual proclivities). My mother's point of view did not permit me the space to actually find out who I was because I was maniacally concerned with maintaining my mother's image of me. It crippled me in so many ways and the situation became nearly unbearable by the time I was in my 20s. My mother and I no longer speak. She never was able to see me as a person. I went from being her genius-savior to a spiteful demon (her point of view) but never just a person.

There was a 17 month old living in Texas, a few years ago, who was reading like an adult. It was eerie. The news reporter gave his tiny toddler a copy of the Wall Street Journal and she read it with only mild struggling. Her mother had the most appropriate reaction to this bizarre talent (in my opinion). The mother said, (paraphrasing), "we're only reaching out to the national news media because we don't know how to cope with this and we've tried to find someone in our area and have found no one," and at this point she starts crying, "and this really worries us." The reporter was surprised and inquired further about her "worry." The mother continued: "these gifts -- which we don't even understand -- come with extreme challenges and my husband and I are just really frightened." This seemed to me a deeply wise woman. The media attention allowed them to find an expert to work with and then that was it -- the family receded from national news and have not appeared again. They are almost impossible to find online at this point. Even if your kid REALLY IS that talented, the last thing you should is promote it. You should shelter it as quietly as possible as it can easily ruin a child's life.

RIP gentle Brandenn. And peace be with the Bremmers.

Real, Raw and Gritty

B-More Careful was a raw and gritty account of what takes place in the life of the streets. The premise of the story was based on betrayal, deception and treachery.

I would have rated this book five stars had it not been for the excessive typos and grammatical errors I came across. Nevertheless, Shannon Holmes is an exceptional and talented writer.

B-More Careful was fast paced. I was able to visualize and feel everything as if I was there.

I admit, I had a difficult time getting through this story. The characters and content felt so real to me. In reading this story, which took place in Baltimore, I came to understand the realities of the streets. The game is certainly not a lifestyle I would want to be a part of, because of all the danger, backstabbing, jealousy, envy, betrayal, greed and revenge which is paramount.

B-More Careful emphasized the life of drugs, money, sex and murder. There is nothing glamorous or attractive about it based on what I read. This story made me sad.

Shannon Holmes did not sugar coat anything. He gave it to you straight and to the point. The characters who stood out for me were Black, Netta and Mimi. Black and Netta being the most ruthless of them all.

Unfortunately, there was no happy Hollywood ending either. All in all, B-More Careful taught me a great deal and opened my eyes to the harsh realities of a world I knew very little about.

One of the best

I am an avid reader of urban fiction and non-fiction African American literature. This book offers an exciting mixture of the two. For instance, the gritty truth of hard-core living in poverty- stricken urban cities mixes with the exciting story of sex, greed, betrayal and lies, friendships,and family. His plot is dynamic and his characters are ego-driven. I read this book twice (both in a matter of days). Shannon Holmes is an excellent writer as he keeps reader's interest throughout every page. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone seeking a release from the ordinary looking for an exciting world to imaging oneself in.

I've read this book a couple of times and probably continue! The only thing I don't like is the typos. There were A LOT of them! Luckily I could piece it together well enough to get through it lol Beyond that.... This book is freakin AWESOME!!

About the Author
Charles Derber, Professor of Sociology at Boston College, has written twenty books,including bestsellers with multiple translations and editions. He has also written opinion pieces for the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Christian Science Monitor, Newsday, and other newspapers and magazines. His most recent book is Capitalism: Should You Buy It? An Invitation to Political Economy (Paradigm 2014).

Yale R. Magrass is a Chancellor Professor of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts–Dartmouth, where he teaches social theory, political sociology, and the social impact of science and technology. He is the author of three other books and more than thirty articles, including encyclopedia entries, served on the board of six journals, has been a recipient of several grants, and participated in numerous international forums.

In their book You're Fired, authors Yale Magrass and Charles Derber present an accessible and articulate explanation of the evolution of inequalities worldwide. These inequalities, they argue, have the potential of leading to the creation of a large class of "surplus people," who have been made obsolete by the American system. As more and more people face the reality of leaving their offices with a pink slip in hand, the relevancy of this discussion, which unpacks the ways the American institutional system normalizes the process of creating surplus people, becomes increasingly apparent. Case studies from periods of world history in the past 300 years helps frame the argument, and provide proof of a consistent pattern of surplus-making.
The authors use a unique and innovative strategy to communicate their message: the book is divided into an essay portion and a play portion. While the essay offers a more intellectual recount, the play presents a witty and satirical analysis that is appropriate for many audiences and ages. The play has the potential to be an influential resource in the current social movements as a source of important knowledge and insight into the past, present, and future of surplus people.

Eye-opening

The history of surplus people provides an interesting analysis of the direction the US economy is heading. Through uses of multiple narrative forms, Derber and Magrass provide an in-depth cultural and economic analysis tracing the path of surplus people throughout history. With a hint of comedy and the occasional appearance of intellectual ghost, the beginning play provides an accessible way to engage readers with the subject matter. The remaining section of the book elaborates on aspects and themes within the play, allowing for a more thorough understanding. As engaging as the narrative style seems, don't assume you're in for a light read. Many books today have plenty of sizzle, but not much steak. I recommend that you sink your teeth into this big, juicy T-bone of a book, a rare treat for intellectual readers searching for economic understanding and substantive history of surplus people. The Surplus America is a must read to understand how Western capitalism became what it is today and what path it is on for tomorrow.

A long essay rather than a book, with two versions of the same mediocre play included to fatten the package and the publisher's profits---ironic, given its radical subject matter. The title in any case tells it all.

Oh Wow!!! Spoilers!!!

It was so sweet. I adored the main characters. I did feel bad that he did not wait for her like she did for him and how he went and slept with the woman he married soon after the heroine told him she loved him when they were younger. I wish he would have divorced his wife and waited for her after that. I mean he made a mistake with that woman and it seems instead of trying to fix it and seeing if the heroine and him still had something, he continued to be with other women while the heroine stayed faithful to her love for him. It is always unfair that the heroes are man whores and the women are faithfully in love for life. That gets me fired up really fast. Why can't men just admit to love and stop sleeping around in these books??? I mean seriously, be a "man" and go after what you want and stop being such a darn coward!!

A wonderfully heart-warming and emotional, yet sexy romance, a MUST read!

One of the biggest (and best) surprises of 2012 was discovering Victoria James and reading her debut novel The Billionaire's Christmas Baby. So as you can see A Risk Worth Taking started with an unfair head start it had to measure up to its predecessor, and I am very happy and relieved to report that not only did it not disappoint, it was just as wonderful as Victoria James' previous novel!

A Risk Worth Taking is the first book in Victoria James' new contemporary romance series taking place in the small town of Red River and featuring the Manning brothers (Quinn, Jackson and Evan). A Risk Worth Taking is Quinn's, the eldest brother's story.

Our heroine, big city girl, successful interior designer Holly suddenly becomes the guardian of Ella, her little niece of 6 months when her sister and her husband are killed in a car accident. She goes back to renovate her childhood home and sell it to put the money in a trust for the baby and since Quinn is the local and successful contractor who will help her with her plans.

Holly was a heroine I not only liked but admired. She was ambitious yet warm-hearted and she took on the role of guardian of her orphaned niece even though she didn't know anything about babies or mothering. Not only was she grieving for her sister (and her husband), she also felt guilty for being the one alive to take care of Ella and scared that one day when was all grown up she would resent her and hate her because it was Holly who brought her up and not her own mother. My heart went out to her when reading about her grief and vulnerability, but her strength and how she tried to cope with these were admirable. Holly is all alone having lost her parents when she was little, then her grandparents who brought her up and now her beloved sister with whom she was so close, she doesn't have any other family than Ella, and all the loss and grieving sadly left their mark on her.

"A few weeks ago, he'd called her cold for selling the house. Now, he knew. The vulnerability that she tried so desperately to hide was staring him in the face. Holly was afraid. This place was her old house, but everyone she loved was gone. The memories were haunting her."

Quinn was a dreamy hero: all responsible and gentleman-like, and it didn't hurt he was swoon-worthy sexy either ;-)

Quinn and Holly go way back: they practically grew up together and Quinn was Holly's first crush and teenage love, and on her last night before leaving for college she declared her love, but he refused her.

"She'd been na�ve and trusting--and told him that she loved him. He knew, looking into her eyes, that he loved her, too, but never said the words aloud. He didn't want to be the guy to hold her back. She'd been too young to know what she wanted for the rest of her life."

Although a decade has gone by the humiliation is still fresh in Holly's mind, and to make matters worse Quinn is even more drop-dead gorgeous than before. She feels her traitorous body reacting, melting to his proximity. Kudos to Victoria James, because the chemistry and attraction between Holly and Quinn was palpable, off the charts!

"Holly, do you know what I want to do right now?" Holly swallowed. Hard.
"Take a hot bath?" He shook his head and took a step closer. She could barely breathe.
"A hot shower?" He shook his head again and his eyes dropped to her mouth. Her lips parted involuntarily.
"Coffee?" she managed to whisper as she heard the beep signaling the brew cycle had finished. He shook his head again and stood a few inches away from her.
"I want to kiss you," he said, his voice deep, and then he gently took her wrist and tugged her toward him."I want to kiss you and taste you and never stop."

I loved Quinn's intensity, the strength and conviction behind his words were so powerful I could feel them resonate through the pages:

"Quinn turned, ready to leave, but then paused."I never kissed you the way I wanted to because I knew that if I did I wouldn't be able to stop. I wouldn't be able to get enough of you. And if I had thought for one second that you meant what you said that night, I would have come after you," he said."

There were lots of delicious sexual tension and sparks flying, but their relationship was so much more than just physical. Loved all the scenes where Quinn teased Holly, made me chuckle out loud.

And of course besides the romance aspect of the story I have to point out that A Risk Worth Taking is as much a story of a woman becoming a mother and a man finding himself a family as it is the story of how Holly and Quinn found love.

"Quinn's eyes opened slowly, and Holly held her breath. Her heart constricted painfully as his hand immediately went to smooth Ella's hair. And then his eyes landed on hers, filled with the emotion that she wanted to run from. He was the man that she could never forget--hard and strong, combined with that mix of tenderness that only he could pull off so well. He made her want to give up her solitary existence, abandon her career in Toronto. He made her want to believe that people stayed, that people lived, that love could conquer everything."

Verdict: A Risk Worth Taking had everything I loved in The Billionaire's Christmas Baby: it had just as much heart and heart-warming/heart-squeezing emotion, equally wonderful and lovable characters and a terrific, captivating romance with such a vivid chemistry that you could feel those sparks flying off the pages. A Risk Worth Taking has everything and more you could expect and want from a contemporary romance, with her captivating writing style, engaging characterization, witty humour and steamy scenes, Victoria James gifts us with another keeper. A Risk Worth Taking is a wonderful first instalment to this new series, I can't wait to read about the other Manning brothers. Readers, you'd better put A Risk Worth Taking on your to-be-read lists, trust me, you don't want to miss this series!

Definitely an author I'll keep my eye out for

I enjoyed this book. It was sweet, sad and emotional, with a healthy dose of unrequited love thrown in to the mix. I also really enjoy reading books set in Canada. I lived there for a year and loved it, so it's always nice to revisit it even if only in print.

Holly has been thrust into the role of parent to her niece Ella after the sudden & tragic death of her sister and brother-in-law. What I liked about how this was handled was that Holly wasn't made out to be some clueless dummy. She's like any new parent, getting through each day learning something new about this little person in their lives. It's just the method in which she becomes a parent that differs from most. I also really appreciated that there was no evil grandparents or aunts threatening to take Ella away.

Coming home after 10 years to find your contractor is the guy you made a fool of yourself over before you left would be a little mortifying. Quinn comes across as a really nice, thoughtful guy with a whole lot of sexy and heroic about him. He really wanted Holly back in the day, but didn't want to be what held her back from fulfilling her dreams. I like that this past event wasn't over-used as a source of conflict, as it quite often can be.

The romance between Holly and Quinn was slow-burning (well, 10 years is a pretty slow burn) and very sweet. Don't go into it expecting any crazy hot sexytimes, it's just not that kind of book. And it didn't need to be - the attraction played out at just the right heat level.

After a recent read where plot moppets were in abundance, I enjoyed reading a child in the storyline that was real and not just used to advance the plot artificially.

I have not read anything else by Victoria James, but based on this, she is definitely an author I'll keep my eye out for.
