What I expected and more. Recommend it regardless of field.
By Amazon Customer
While stressing out a year too early for my med school interviews I came across Dr. K on Twitter and decided to give the book a read. I first saw the free preview and for the price I thought I had nothing to lose by buying it. It definitely met my expectations and surpassed them. As the book states it is not a Q&A type of list but just the questions and you come up with the rest. It helped me contemplate and think about all sorts of questions I had never even considered.

I can say that while reading it I became increasingly more confident that I will not be caught by surprise in an interview and I will have time to think out possible answers so I can organize my thoughts and not blubber on the spot. I honestly recommend it for anyone regardless of field of study, anyone that has to go through an interview in their life (and who doesn't) should at least give a quick read.

Just a List of Questions - But Nothing More
By DJ Ileum
I first encountered Dr. K on twitter. I thought his first book "Everything I Learned in Medical School" was a very good read. I was able to read it in about 2-3 hours. It was full of that cheeky jaded med student humor, but at the end of the day you never doubted for a second that Dr. K loved medicine. It reminded me that I would not doubt my future career choice despite the sacrifices I would have to make in other parts of my life.

Why Medicine is a completely different book. Aside from the first 11 paragraphs that make up the first 3 chapters, the book is a list of 500 questions. Most of the 500 questions don't include any further explanation or insight on how to answer them (obviously we're suppose to think about them and answer them ourselves). I'd say maybe 10% of the questions in the book get a paragraph long explanation on how one should answer such a question. Unfortunately you can't really sit down and read this book because it is essentially a list of 500 questions. On my way to work I read through approximately 25% of the book (the bus ride that day took about 10 minutes). Since the book, to me, doesn't seem like it's meant to be read in the traditional sense, I don't know how one should use it? I certainly wouldn't whip it out in an admissions office waiting for my interview.

In Summary, I was disappointed by this book. I ended up zoning out as I glossed over an endless list of questions. A few made me stop and think and wonder how I would answer them. But at the end of the day I didn't feel like I finished this book knowing more or feeling more confident about my looming med school interviews. Since this is an ebook, I look forward to and hope Dr. K will make substantial edits.

Since information is such a precious commodity, Avison and ...
By Hannah Lee
Since information is such a precious commodity, Avison and Fitzgerald present a theory-to-practice book on information systems and how organizations (from all levels) can benefit from the use of an information systems development perspective. The authors give historical, academic, and practical view of the many methodologies and levels of systems thinking within information systems including the strengths, weaknesses, criticisms, and flaws of the many components that are a part of an information system.
The biggest appreciation for this book would be the authors’ ability to explain why those dealing in information systems will find having systems perspective will prove beneficial. For the most part, information systems develop informally through a combination of experience, mimicking others, and overall a very ad hoc method. What Avison and Fitzgerald propose is trying to understand the circumstances of why and how particular methodologies of information systems develop bring the entire system into perspective. Additionally, the authors go further than other textbooks to give outlines on how to approach the parts of information systems including the people, the technology, and the processes for practical applications.
Any criticism of Avison and Fitzgerald’s book would be the lack of academic terminology that would connect information systems development with the larger fields of organizational theory and/or systems theory. Having such a connection would give a systemic view of information systems in the overall scope of systems that would benefit from readers coming from a more academic than practical route.

A study in contradictions and misguidance
By Stansson
As a person well acquainted with Islam and the 'Nation of Islam' claims to Islam, the only reason I elevated this book to a single star is because its a good glimpse into Elijah Muhammad's pseudo-messianic mindset. More on that later. 'Our Saviour Has Arrived' is one of two books simultaneously released in Feb. 1974 a year prior to Elijah's death. Both it and 'The Flag of Islam' represent Elijah's final works. As for those who have gushed over its content, quite frankly they not only lack familiarity with Islam, but have sipped Elijah's koolade.

According to official NOI doctrine, the Creator of the heavens and Earth is a physical human being who was jailed on the streets of Detroit and Chicago in 1930. By this, Elijah rejects the well-known Islamic concept of a transcendent Creator who is above and beyond His creation. Moroever, Elijah makes the absurd claim on p. 67, that "99% of the old world Muslims think that Allah is only a "Spirit" and is not a Man."

Elijah's claim is pure nonsense. Indeed, this claim displays his Christian background as well as his total ignorance of basic Islamic belief, as Muslims DO NOT believe Allah to be a `spirit.' Nowhere in the Qur'an does Allah refer to Himself as a spirit nor does the Prophet (ï·º) state anything which would remotely suggest this anywhere in his authentic narrations. Allah says: "There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing." [Ash-Shurah, 42:11] In fact, Allah refers to the spirit as a part of His creation: "They ask you (O Muhammad) about the spirit, Say the spirit (exists) by my Lord's command." [Al-Isra', 17:85]

Furthermore, on p. 89 Elijah claims that Heaven is racially segregated, and on p. 110-111 he proclaims belief in a new heaven, a new Islam and a pantheon of gods: "He, Master Fard Muhammad, God in Person, will create a new heaven and a new earth, a new Islam and a new government and people.... This is the way of the Gods. One God is not allowed to pattern after another God when it comes to universal change."

Islam does not proclaim such outlandish concepts and 'Our Saviour Has Arrived' is laden with them. I could go on, yet in summary, if one expects guidance from "Our Saviour Has Arrived' you won't find it. However, if you have an interest in the doctrines of the largest Western pseudo-Islamic cult, and wish to contrast it with real Islam, then it may serve a purpose.

"Our Saviour Has Arrived". Like a coin has two sides, this book delivers two great messages.
By Selah Muhammad
This is first a message to a people who have suffered great wrong doing. A people downtrodden and oppressed for centuries, robbed of the knowledge of themselves their religion god and others, robbed of their language and history, enslaved and caused to serve those who enslaved them for that time without compensation. Elijah Muhammad delivers to those people a message that they are no longer rejected that a Saviour has arrived to deliver them from their oppressors, to return to them that which was stolen and return them to a position of greatness which they once rightfully commanded and enjoyed on this planet.
The other side of the coin is a message to slavemasters and their children, a message causing great sadness and arousing great anger. Anger that those people they held prey whom they guarded so carefully to ensure that it not receive the light of freedom justice and equality, have indeed received just such light and are now reclaiming their own true God and people. We see and hear the truth of Elijah Muhammad' s words expressed in the action of the Three branches on the government of this country. We also see Gods wrath expressed in the constant calamities, disasters headed to America, punishesment for her greatest sins against God's people.
I sincerely recommend this book to those on both sides of the coin.

The New Science of Consciousness: Exploring the Complexity of Brain, Mind, and Self, by Paul L. Nunez

This book explains in layperson's terms a new approach to studying consciousness based on a partnership between neuroscientists and complexity scientists. The author, a physicist turned neuroscientist, outlines essential features of this partnership. The new science goes well beyond traditional cognitive science and simple neural networks, which are often the focus in artificial intelligence research. It involves many fields including neuroscience, artificial intelligence, physics, cognitive science, and psychiatry.

What causes autism, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's disease? How does our unconscious influence our actions? As the author shows, these important questions can be viewed in a new light when neuroscientists and complexity scientists work together. This cross-disciplinary approach also offers fresh insights into the major unsolved challenge of our age: the origin of self-awareness. Do minds emerge from brains? Or is something more involved?

Using human social networks as a metaphor, the author explains how brain behavior can be compared with the collective behavior of large-scale global systems. Emergent global systems that interact and form relationships with lower levels of organization and the surrounding environment provide useful models for complex brain functions.

By blending lucid explanations with illuminating analogies, this book offers the general reader a window into the latest exciting developments in brain research.

Review
“A thoroughly engaging, fascinating, and lively tour of the relationship between physics, complexity, and the mind. Challenging, innovative, and thought-provoking.”

—Todd E Feinberg, coauthor of The Ancient Origins of Consciousness: How the Brain Created Experience

"Nunez applies a mixture of philosophy and science to tackle the fundamental problem in neuroscience—consciousness and how the brain works to create mind. The thought-provoking book will open many readers' eyes to the new appreciation of the brain as a complex dynamic system of waves of electrical activity interacting at different rhythms and phases to process and filter information, to learn from experience, and to operate at an unconscious, pre-conscious, and conscious level.”

—R. Douglas Fields, PhD, neuroscientist and author of The Other Brain and Why We Snap

“It is rare to encounter such a readable and yet deep exploration of the nature of consciousness. The New Science of Consciousness draws on some of the most fascinating findings in fields as diverse as neuroscience, quantum mechanics, relativity, complexity theory, and the role of information as the fundamental underpinning of physical reality. Nunez demonstrates that the materialistic reductionist approach frequently used to dismiss or trivialize the ‘hard problem’ of consciousness is fundamentally flawed. He goes on to propose a fascinating and altogether more plausible ‘multiscale conjecture’ that opens the possibility of consciousness being encoded at multiple spatial and temporal scales of brain function and structure.A profound yet lucid contribution to one of the deepest questions facing science: the nature of consciousness.”

—Richard Silberstein, PhD, Professor Emeritus at Swinburne University, Melbourne, and chairman of Neuro-Insight

“How does our conscious mental life arise in conjunction with neurophysiological processes going on in our brains? That vital question is the central target of this fine book, which is authored by one of the principal architects of contemporary brain theory and written in an engaging and informed style accessible to anyone who wants to get a general picture of what’s going on in this rapidly emerging field—by which I mean not only what’s already more or less agreed upon scientifically but also the potentially revolutionary new ideas that are just now coming over the horizon. Strongly recommended!”

—Edward F. Kelly, lead author of Irreducible Mind and Beyond Physicalism

“Paul L. Nunez is a leading expert on brain dynamics, particularly on the mechanisms of EEG generation. This volume is an impressive compendium of major current topics in physics, neuroscience, and cognitive science. From this foundation, Nunez attempts to build a link between the physical and mental worlds by adding consciousness to the unsolved problems of relativity theory, quantum mechanics, and thermodynamics.”

—Gyrgy Buzsaki, author of Rhythms of the Brain

“In the humble and highly illuminating manner of a master of several disciplines, Nunez shares his life’s work on the relation between the dynamic (multiscale) patterns of the brain and mental states. His synthesis culminates in an enticing conjecture linking the physical and mental worlds that the ‘new science’ of consciousness ignores at its peril.”

—J. A. Scott Kelso, Creech Chair in Science, Florida Atlantic University, and professor of computational neuroscience, Ulster University

Blue Collar, by Sean Michael

(Gay / Erotica / Erotic Romance / Contemporary / BDSM) Kendall Webber is deep in the closet. Between working as a mechanic in a garage, having served in the army during the era of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, and being raised by a fundamentalist-preacher stepfather who sent him to summer camps to make him straight, he's learned to hide his sexuality from absolutely everyone. Still, when a tall, dark, and handsome stud named Barton Willis III roars into the garage in his vintage Mustang, Kendall can't help but look admiringly and longingly at the man, just a little. And when the flirtatious Barton not only looks back but eagerly invites him to explore his hidden desires, Kendall's whole world is turned upside-down. Now, the question remains...can Barton help Kendall let go of the past and the attitudes he's had, literally, beaten into him?

Too much sex, not enough plot, and definite dubious consent issues
By Julie L. Hayes
(3/5 averaged to 4)

Kendall works as a mechanic at Peter's Garage. One day, a vintage Mustang with a sexy owner roars into the shop with a muffler that's shot. The car's owner is Barton Willis III, and he starts hitting on Kendall immediately. The mechanic never knew what hit him. Barton has to leave his car for repairs, and he talks Ken into giving him a lift home. That one ride is going to change Ken's life forever.

Okay, so this is my first Sean Michael novel. I've heard a lot about him and his books, I know he's popular, so I thought I would see what the hype is all about for myself.

I'll start out by saying this about that--he isn't a bad writer, far from it. But I wouldn't call him particularly good either. And I'll explain that, before all you SM fans take umbrage, which you probably will anyway.

First, this book is 90% sex and maybe 10% plot. That's way overbalanced in the direction of smut. Which is fine, if it's smut you're looking for. My mistake, as it isn't labeled as such. Now, I'm not a prude, far from it, and I have no problem with explicit sex. Love it, honestly. But there comes a point when there's too much of it. And this book easily reached that point. There is hardly a scene that doesn't have sex in it. Even good sex gets old if you're getting beaten in the head with it.

When it comes to the plot, it's weak as hell. Which leads to my next gripe - lack of any sort of character development. He never fleshes out these characters. And this book also falls into the dreaded insta-love category. Again, I have no problem with insta-love, if it makes sense. But there should be some reasoning, logic, or something other than I see you, I love you. Barton seems like a nice guy. He has loads of money, which comes in handy `cause he can lavish it on the poor mechanic. The mechanic, Ken, is very deeply closeted, and was sent to a gay healing camp over several summers as a youth. He also served in the military, during the time of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. However, as a character, I found him to be weakly written. In fact, his strongest scene is the first one, when he meets Barton. After that, once he's under Barton's thumb and influence, he almost disappears as a person, and becomes more of a stereotype, sounding at times like a sleepwalker, or as if he had mental issues, although I hate to put it that way.

The romance is unbelievable, part of that insta-love syndrome. I have no idea what attracts Barton to Ken, although I can see attraction from Ken's point of view better. I think if you worry about it too much, you're overthinking it. And this book doesn't stand up to much thinking about, you're just supposed to accept the insta-love and go with it.

Warning: this book contains sounding. If you're unfamiliar with the term, you might want to look it up before you read it. I had heard of it, never read it until now.

Second warning: This book is filled with dubious consent, and this totally makes my skin crawl. I do understand dubious consent, and in some contexts, it works. But not when the person involved keeps saying no (which Ken does) and Barton just rides roughshod over him, telling him he knows better, he knows what's good for Ken, and so forth and so on. No, dude, just no! That is wrong on many levels. No means no, not what I think is best for you. It's immaterial that Ken accepted it after the fact. What counts is he said no, and his wishes were ignored.

"You can deny it all you want, I know what you need." That's just an example of Barton's philosophy.

We really see little of the plot outside of their bedroom antics, which cover all the basics and then some. He had the chance to make something really nice out of this story, it had potential. But he stuck with what I assume to be his formula, and let the opportunity pass him by.

I'd also like to mention that, at least in the copy I read, the editing is sloppy, which surprised me, as it's an Amber Quill book. They are usually better than that.

So here is my dilemma. I'm sure his fans will eat this up, assuming all of his books are the same way. So in scoring it for its intended audience, it probably rates 5 stars. However, in my opinion, it is lackluster and wanting in too many areas to rate more than a three. So I'll compromise and give it 4.

Will I read more by Sean Michael? Doubtful. Not that I think he's bad, and yeah, the sex was hot. But when all is said and done, it just wasn't memorable, and the characters were forgettable, and I think he is doing himself a disservice if this is what he's putting out when I think he can do better. Granted, that's just my opinion, you have to decide for yourselves. But frankly, there are too many better authors out there to go back to this one, even to get off with.

Blue Collar by Sean Michael is one of those books that stays with you long after you are done read it, the character’s emotional journey touched my heart and kept me turning the pages.
Kendall has literally been beaten into the closet so far he refuses to ever get out of it. But he is such a lost soul before he meets Barton. He needs to be rescued from his life and himself the question is …is Barton the man to do it?
Barton is a man who trusts his gut instincts and they are telling him Kendall is worth whatever he has to do to keep him. He might look like a rich man who is superficial but he is anything but that when you get to know him.
Over all I really enjoyed this book, the love and understanding Barton has for Kendall really shines through. The BDSM inside of it just enhances the storyline bringing these two closer. The ending is really sweet too, everyone should have someone who accepts them just the way they are I am very glad that Kendall found his someone in Barton.

Five Shooting Stars!!

Lovin' the story about First Times
By GGR-Review
As with all of Sean Michaels’ books, I love this book. The story is fun. There is some angst, some tears, some laughs, and many emotions. The sex is hot, especially since we get to go through the first times for so much with Ken. Sean really knows how to write, and did an amazing job of taking us through this time of confusion and learning for Ken. I found Ken extremely cute, in that often he was like a little child in a candy shop, feeling things for the first time. Each experience is new to him, and Mr. Michaels has really put this into words in an extremely easy to read, fun story.

Please Be with Me: A Song for My Father, Duane Allman, by Galadrielle Allman

A deeply personal, revealing, and lyrical portrait of Duane Allman, founder of the legendary Allman Brothers Band, written by his daughter

Galadrielle Allman went to her first concert as an infant in diapers, held in her teenage mother’s arms. Playing was her father—Duane Allman, who would become one of the most influential and sought-after musicians of his time. Just a few short years into his remarkable career, he was killed in a motorcycle accident at the age of twenty-four. His daughter was two years old.

Galadrielle was raised in the shadow of his loss and his fame. Her mother sought solace in a bohemian life. Friends and family found it too painful to talk about Duane. Galadrielle listened intently to his music, read articles about him, steeped herself in the mythic stories, and yet the spotlight rendered him too simple and too perfect to know. She felt a strange kinship to the fans who longed for him, but she needed to know more. It took her many years to accept that his life and his legacy were hers, and when she did, she began to ask for stories—from family, fellow musicians, friends—and they began to flow.

Galadrielle Allman’s memoir is at once a rapturous, riveting, and intimate account of one of the greatest guitar prodigies of all time, the story of the birth of a band that redefined the American musical landscape, and a tender inquiry of a daughter searching for her father in the memories of others.

“If you have ever been part of a family that has no photograph left behind to record its wholeness, you know what the absence of that picture does to you: Its nonexistence is itself a portrait of an incomplete heart that doesn’t contain you. Galadrielle Allman grew up in the territory of that loss, trying to understand a father who held her but who she never got to hold in return. Her account of the life of Duane Allman—rock and roll’s most lyrical guitarist—is the most moving music biography I’ve ever read. Better than that, Galadrielle has uncovered the heart and motivations, the desolation and saving graces, of the man, and lays it plain in a born-to-write southern voice. “ ‘You can live forever inside a goodbye,’ Galadrielle Allman knows. But then you embrace it, explore it, and call forth its witnesses. In lyrical prose, and with love and wisdom, the now-mature daughter of guitar legend Duane Allman, who died at twenty-four when she was two, meditates on his outsized grip on her life, and retraces that life, and her mother’s, sending us to the South at the end of the sixties, when girls were hapless hippie goddesses, music was male and muscular, and even redneck culture was being transformed. But beyond that vibrant portrait is a comfort. We all idealize someone who left us long ago; we all romanticize some memory. This story invites us to savor our own secret intersection of nostalgia and emotional mercy, and it feels very, very good to have soulful, elegant company as we do.”—Sheila Weller, author of the New York Times bestseller Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon—and the Journey of a Generation

The growling voice and speed of the motorcycle thrilled her. It was a pretty thing, a Harley-Davidson with glossy curves and gleaming spokes, and big enough to feel secure. In helmet and goggles, Geraldine took flight down the river road behind her mother’s house, past stands of sugar maple and hickory trees and neat rows of tobacco plants lining the fields of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She wheeled downtown by the railroad tracks that divided Main Street, past the brick façades of shops shaded by fancy awnings, the wind on her pink cheeks. She had ridden her bicycle down the same roads in her childhood to visit neighbors, leaving her farm chores undone, forgetting to stoke the smokehouse fire or weed the kitchen garden. Her motorcycle gave her that same floating feeling of freedom for a while.

Then Bill wrote home from the front in France during World War II: “That motorcycle better be gone by the time I get home, or you can choose: it or me.” Jerry thought, That decision won’t be as easy to make as he thinks. He didn’t realize that when she wanted to do something, she did it. She didn’t care how it looked or what other people thought. Like when she cut her long hair into a short crop—it was the new fashion and it felt light and easy, but her mother was so shocked she’d cried. And no one approved of the way she kept working, even after the babies came; she refused to give that up.

Jerry needed a vehicle while Bill was away and the motorcycle was cheaper than a car and used far less gasoline. She was smart with money. During the Depression, she saw how no one could afford gas for their cars, so they disconnected the wheels from their chassis, hooked them up to mules, and called them Hoover carts. She even brought her sister Janie’s baby girl, Jo Jane, her first birthday cake on her motorcycle, strapped behind her in a box. She drove it all the way to Fort Bragg, where Janie’s husband, Joe Pitt, was stationed. The Harley was practical and it was a pleasure to be able to go wherever she liked.

Bill wouldn’t have liked it if he had known how she learned to ride. Jerry saw an ad in the newspaper for the Harley, and decided to go and get it; then she had to walk it home. It was heavy to push, but she had no idea how to ride it. While she was rolling that metal beast beside her, a man drove by in a truck, slowly circled around the block, and passed her again. On the third pass he finally called out to her, “Hey! You know how to ride that thing? You want me to carry you home with it?” She ignored him. “Miss, I ride a motorcycle, too, and if you’d like to learn, a bunch of us meet on Saturdays and we’d be happy to show you how.” She climbed into his truck and they became friends. Now she spent her free days learning to ride with a new group, and she wasn’t the only woman there. She didn’t see anything wrong with it. With a little help, she learned to trust her instincts, steering with her body before her mind could get in the way. She leaned into turns, powering the engine with a twist of her wrist on the throttle, braking with her feet and hands; it all became second nature.

But Bill got his way in the end. She decided the motorcycle wasn’t worth the fight it would have taken to keep it. When Bill came home from the war, all that was left of the bike was a great photo of Jerry riding it. That picture came in handy later, when she was raising their two sons. The sight of her on that motorcycle was instant cool to Duane and Gregg. They teased her that she was one hot mama, and later they asked her if they could put the picture on an album cover, but she said no.

The first rebel on a Harley the brothers ever knew was their mother. Now that picture sits on my desk.

My grandparents, Willis Allman and Geraldine Robbins, called Bill and Jerry by their friends, met in a local tavern in Jerry’s hometown of Rocky Mount. Bill and a fellow serviceman joined Jerry and her girlfriends, sliding in beside them in a circular booth. Bill joked easily and looked smart in his khaki uniform; his eyes kept meeting hers. It wasn’t love at first sight, but she had to admit they had chemistry. Soon he was challenging her to have another drink, then one more, and when he swore she couldn’t have another, she drank it in a single gulp. She outdrank him with her head held high. The taste of whisky burning down her throat, the low, glowing light of the bar, and Bill’s smile, none of it could bowl her over. Later, he told her that was the moment he decided she was the girl for him. With her blond Betty Grable curls piled neatly on her head and high-heeled shoes with straps around her ankles, Jerry was a beauty with a sparkle in her blue eyes. More than all that, she had a quick mind. She had an answer for everything and she was funny—Good Lord she could make him laugh. Within a week, walking home from the movies, passing through pools of light under streetlamps into darkness, Bill said, “Geraldine, I’m going to marry you.” She told him he was crazy and quipped, “I hope you don’t ask every girl you meet. One of them might say yes.”

Jerry had been married before. Memories of her first love got in the way of giving Bill an answer for a time. She didn’t let herself think of Roy very often. She didn’t much like to form her first husband’s name in her mind; it still hurt that much. They were sweethearts and jitterbug partners, and married right out of high school in 1935, when they were both eighteen. Her first two years with Roy were wonderful. They set up house and took romantic trips to Daytona Beach, Florida, where they stayed in a motel with little separate cottages by the sea. He was sweet and daring, and she was completely in love. He also liked to drink, just like her daddy.

Jerry’s daddy, Simon, was what they used to call a garage drinker, secretive and solitary, not fun-loving like Roy. Her daddy sipped gin from a hidden jar while walking in the woods with his rifle, hunting at dawn while he drank. Simon Robbins brought his kills home and skinned them on the porch, bent over the body of a rabbit or a squirrel with his big knife. Her mama cooked the little animals for his dinner, and he ate alone after his children went to sleep. He thought his kids didn’t see his drinking, until they became teenagers. Then he noticed how they avoided his eyes when he said he was going out. He pulled away from all of them then, even his eldest son, fearing their judgment. He had his share of disappointments. Simon was forced to close his garage and filling station and go back to working leased land after the market crashed. At harvest time, his three children had to work in the neighbors’ cotton fields, weighed down by canvas bags as long as they were tall, picking bolls for hours in the sun. Jerry hated it. She hated the work and she hated how her father gave up. He flat refused to help them, and her older brother Robbie took his place, doing the work of a man even as a young boy. And then their mother, Lizzie, had a fourth child, a baby boy named Erskine, after all her other children were almost grown. They loved and doted on the baby, but it wasn’t easy to add another need to their own.

Jerry’s mama never spoke of hard things. Lizzie was a saint, the way she understood each of her children and showed them her love. She was sixteen years old when she met the handsome suitor who became this surly sinner, her husband. Simon gave her a gold bracelet as a promise of his intent to marry. She was the daughter of a Primitive Baptist preacher, and her family believed she was too young to wear an engagement ring. Even though she was proper, Lizzie wasn’t above a good joke, saying, “When I first met that man, I loved him so much I could have eaten him alive. After we were married, I wished I had.”

Jerry understood that. The real trouble in her first marriage to Roy started when she realized she wasn’t the only one who appreciated her husband’s looks and charm. Women loved Roy and he let them. He took Jerry to parties, and before long a girl would come sit on his lap and say, “Why is she here?” gesturing to Jerry. She would answer the tramp herself: “You better get off of his lap or I’ll show you why I’m here.”

Roy would laugh and reassure her, but she could see through him. He couldn’t help himself when it came to drink or women. It took Jerry three more years to leave him, after the first two good years were over. She had to be sure he would never change. She cried her tears before she got in front of a judge and asked for a divorce. She wasn’t going to wail in a public courtroom and make a fool of herself.

By the time she met Bill in 1943, Jerry had learned how to hold on to herself and her liquor. She wasn’t looking to marry again, but Bill was tenacious. He was handsome and tall with sandy hair—a country boy from a town fifty miles west of Nashville, Tennessee, called Vanleer. You almost couldn’t call Vanleer a town, just a place with a post office, a church, and a dry goods store. A few hundred people lived in small homes nested in the dense green hills, eating what they could grow. His parents’ place had a dirt floor, tamped down and swept clean. Their kitchen was outside under a little roof and their water came from a well. Bill’s father was another hard drinker, and his mother wanted more out of life but couldn’t figure out how to get it.

Bill knew from a young age the army was his best way out. He got his younger brother, Sam, to come with him, and they both worked as recruiters, convincing other seventeen-year-old boys to join up. Eventually, they were able to move their mama into a comfortable home in Nashville. Their daddy stayed behind, and lived out the rest of his life alone in the country. Bill and Jerry shared common ground: They both watched their parents work hard and end up with very few comforts. They were determined to live better lives for themselves.

While Bill was courting Jerry, he brought little gifts of scarce and rationed treasures: a pair of silk stockings, red roses, and an enormous box of Whitman’s chocolates. Jerry and her sister Janie, who was pregnant with her daughter, sat knee to knee balancing the big candy box between them and ate every perfect piece.

Bill said, “Geraldine, to know you is to love you, but you won’t let anyone in close enough to know you!” That was true. She was cautious with herself now, but the idea of getting away from North Carolina, away from her family’s opinions and advice, that was a notion strong enough to pull her toward Bill. She was close with her brothers and sister, but she was cut from a different cloth. They seemed as rooted to home as the oak tree planted in their mother’s front yard. Jerry wanted to live out in the world. She wasn’t satisfied to nest in North Carolina forever. Bill was career military. He was strong, and confident, moving from town to town with ease. He didn’t know where his next assignment would take him and she liked that idea. She thought he could be a good father to the children she dreamed of having, and she wasn’t getting any younger. She had planned to have a family long before she turned thirty, but here she was, twenty-five and divorced. She was ready to begin again. She better be, she told herself. It was clear Bill wasn’t going to stop asking until she said yes. After a short ceremony at the justice of the peace on the army base, Jerry told Bill, “This marriage is the result of a smooth snow job!”

They were married only a short time before the war called Bill away. Jerry waited for letters from him, rode her motorcycle, and worked for her brother-in-law, Joe, managing his restaurant out by the airport. She stayed with Joe and Janie, and spent time with her friends. As much as she missed her new husband, she was also comfortable in her independence. It was her nature.

When Bill came home from Europe, he was a changed man. He had landed in Normandy on D-Day and survived. He was volatile and moody, what they used to call shell-shocked. Jerry knew he had horrible stories to tell, but he only talked about the war at the Officers’ Club, with other men who had been there.

Bill was continuously reassigned once he was home. If something didn’t have wheels or fit in a box, they didn’t own it. They moved around North Carolina, on to South Carolina, then to Tennessee, sometimes living on army bases, sometimes in houses near small storefront recruitment centers. They settled for the longest stretch of time in Nashville, where they bought a beautiful clapboard house on Westbrook Avenue in 1947. That is where they lived when their first son, Howard Duane Allman, was born.

Bill’s brother Sam lived with them, and it was a happy time. Jerry cooked big dinners to share with their friends. They played cards in the kitchen, and Bill seemed better than he had in a long time. Bill carried Duane proudly around the house and took him to Vanleer to show him off to his father. He took him to the Officers’ Club and set his little bottom up on the bar beside his glass of beer. But the happy time did not last for long.

Bill soon got word he was once again going to be reassigned, and they packed up and sold their house.

Jerry hated to give up their first real home, and then, when it was too late to get it back, they found out Bill’s reassignment was only across town, in another part of Nashville.

Most personal book to date about the ABB, very well written.
By LinnieX
I am a big fan of the Allman Brothers and Duane Allman, and have read every book published on both subjects. This is, by far, the most personal account of Brother Duane Allman that I have read, told with lovingly lyrical prose by his beautiful Daughter, Galadrielle Allman.

From page two, when i read this statement: "My father is killed in the first paragraph of every article ever written about him", i realized that this was gong to be different from every other book i have read on the topic. After I moved my box of kleenex a little closer,i dug in and found a book that celebrates the life, not the death, of this great man who left us way to soon. This book offers us a glance at the women involved with the ABB saga, and is told with loving care from the POV of a woman who has been surrounded by the myth of her own father.

This is a must read for any allman brothers fan, and a worthy addition to anyones library.

Thank you Ms. Allman for sharing this with me.

The book I've been waiting for
By Alex
When it comes to the Allman Brothers, I'm as hard core as it gets. I thought I'd picked up all the ephemera about Duane Allman that love and memory of those who knew him would let out. Then Galadrielle does this. Her prose is lyrical, beautiful, moving. Duane comes across as very human. Then she fills in the gaps. Mama A, Donna, Big Linda, Candy--all the names who were paper dolls in other books. It's the story of a time, of a special place, of change that I lived through. But this book was not written for me, the Allman Brothers fan. It's Galadrielle's personal history and we are privileged to get to share it. She is her father's daughter and her mother's, too.

A Stunningly Beautiful Memoir
By Zo
An incredibly engaging book that held me captive right to the bitter end. I turned fourteen just a month before The Fillmore East hit the market, but I had already been indoctrinated to Duane and knew of the band he'd formed and the music they played. For months after Fillmore East was released I fell asleep every night listening to the album, and I made an effort to turn everybody I knew on to their sound. (I lived in upstate NY, about as far away from the sounds coming out of the South as one could possibly be) To say I was a rabid Allman Brothers fan was an understatement and I was completely devastated months later when Duane died. (He and his band is one of very few top artists I didn't get to see live during the early 70's) But I never quit listening to the band and after Duane's death I loyally followed the careers of several members when they went on to do other things. At some point along the way I considered myself pretty knowledgeable about all things Duane. I researched his session work and retraced as much of his early musical beginnings as I possibly could. (Remember, this was WAY pre-Internet) I simply idolized Gregg and Duane and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Listening to Duane's session work turned me on to artists that I went on to follow and talk about for years, despite the fact that nobody in my neck of the woods knew who I was talking about. This book turned out to be a precious read for me and so much more so because it was beautifully and carefully written. It's rich with details, not only about the people involved in the band and the wide variety of talent that crossed their path along the way, but Galadrielle's deep understanding of the rare and talented gifts these artists had make this story truly come alive. I can't say enough positive things about this book. I know that I will treasure it and read it many more times, if for no other reason than to remind me what real music was like back in the day when I was growing up.

Building Splunk Solutions (Second edition): Splunk Developer Guide, by Grigori Melnik, Dominic Betts, Matthew Tevenan, David Foster, Brian

This guide follows a Splunk software engineering team on a journey to build solutions with partners, focusing on the real world use cases to showcase various technologies of the Splunk Developer Platform. Like a documentary, it captures our story from envisioning and user experience prototyping to development, packaging and multiple production deployments. It includes the diverse perspectives of developers and testers, administrators and product owners, security experts and release engineers. As on any real journey, we make mistakes, have arguments, and change our minds along the way. So in addition to showing you how best to do things, we highlight the pitfalls and issues that we encounter, and the solutions we find. The key element of this guidance, of course, is the code. We’ve made the code repos open, and recommend you study the source code of the reference apps and the associated tests. In fact, you can see and replay the code in motion, as it was developed. We encourage you to reuse and learn from it. The second edition is expanded with 10 new chapters, including 3 new ones in the Journey covering OAuth, alerting and high performance HTTP Event Collector. Additionally we include a new section - the Essentials where we've generalized the lessons learned from this Journey and other development projects into fundamental patterns and practices. We still cover the full spectrum of application development from getting data into Splunk Enterprise to packaging and distributing your app. Each topic combines design and implementation guidelines in a way that supports an iterative development process. These guidelines cover not only Splunk Enterprise operational and programming concepts that the application deals with directly, but also consider performance, quality, and maintenance issues in recommending particular approaches.

Finally, the key to wealth, shared in easy to understand and reachable steps,
By Sarah Rose
After years of putting off reviewing my finances, I discovered a website that assisted me to do such. However, as Wilson shares in The Wealth Chef, there is more to wealth than simply saving money. I knew there must be more to wealth, and set about trying to find out more. I began reading the financial pages, thus learning more, yet I was still looking for the keys. I wanted a rapid education on finances, and found this in The Wealth Chef. Fortunately, Wilson shares her knowledge in easily understandable steps, complete with diagrams for those requiring visuals. Learn about compound interest, about choosing freedom and rich life experiences now, tips and more...
Due to Wilson's comparisons to cooking and her numerous analogies, you will find wealth discussed in a refreshing manner that you can enjoy. Downloads of spreadsheets are available through links.

Wilson clearly defines what an asset is, and that which is not (house, car, furniture, clothes, music system, TV etc.) With her encouragement, one feels the enjoyment of taking charge of personal finances. As the author talks about the importance of goals, she mentions that writing your goals down triggers RAS, a network of nerves in the brain that control awareness and attention, either accepting or rejecting stimuli. This then filters reality according to what is most important to you. According to Ebbinghaus, you will also need to regularly review your goals, in order to remember them, and thus manifest the desired reality.

I recall a private session in 2007 that I paid over 75 for, that introduced me to visualising my dreams in order to realise them as reality. I missed how good that session felt, and how it spurred me on in my life, no matter what. Imagine my joy to find such process in more depth in The Wealth Chef. Wilson guides you through every detail, until your mind is saturated with positivity and believes the possibility of the new pathway.
