A Matter of Opinion, by Victor S. Navasky

Victor S. Navasky is the renowned editor, writer, and teacher who has been at the helm of The Nation for almost thirty years. A Matter of Opinion, a scintillating reflection on his journalistic experiences, is also an extraordinary political document-a spirited, provocative argument for independent journals of opinion as vital to the health of democracy.

Whether at the satirical magazine Monocle (which he founded when he was in law school), or at The New York Times, or finally at The Nation, Navasky's commitment to political engagement and to the social and intellectual values of independent cultural activity has always been front and center. In a wonderfully entertaining narrative, he tells of his innovative efforts to find money to keep The Nation afloat and to keep its pages lively, honest, and relevant, and he embellishes it with unforgettable stories-about his colleagues and opponents, from E. L. Doctorow to Bill Buckley; his heroes, from I. F. Stone to Jrgen Habermas; and his precedessors, from Daniel Defoe to Carey McWilliams.

Navasky's accomplishments have been legion, despite the threats of revenue-driven multinational media corporations, and despite the sometimes ugly, sometimes hilarious problems that fearless muckrakers face in any culture. A Matter of Opinion is a passionately written, irresistibly charming account of a great journalistic tradition.

From Publishers Weekly
As the mordant maxim byword at the offices of a certain left-wing weekly has it, "If it's bad for the country, it's good for The Nation" (the magazine's circulation has risen 71% since the 2000 election of George Bush). Of course, an alternative theory might emphasize Navasky's sure-handed stewardship of the country's "oldest weekly magazine" over the last 25 years. After editing a prominent 1960s satirical magazine (the Monocle) and working at the New York Times Magazine, Navasky, with his combination of bedrock principle and a light touch, was a perfect fit at the Nation. Unmistakably confined to professional doings (family members are hardly mentioned), this memoir recounts myriad tempests in teapots (and some not so trifling), lawsuits, donnybrooks, controversies and lines drawn in the sand. If the New Republic is where liberals address Washington, the Nation is where liberals talk among themselves. Navasky discusses many of his lively charges and colleagues (Trillin, Ephron, Hitchens, Sontag), and relates his thinking behind some of his most important decisions as an editor. Too fragmented to substitute for a history of the left over the past few decades, Navasky's story is finally about the nuts and bolts of editing an intellectual journal, interesting enough in its own right. From The New Yorker
"Journals of opinion are not by themselves going to save the world," Navasky admits, but, in nearly three decades of running The Nation and in four hundred-odd pages here, he remains a tireless evangelist for the idea that the world as we know it—liberal, democratic, and Enlightened—won't be saved without them and the public discourse they foster. Opinion magazines themselves, however, survive on the strength of their editors, or, as Navasky points out, on the reach of their editors' Rolodexes, and, luckily for The Nation, Navasky knows almost everyone. The front-room tour of his charmed rise from the Little Red School House to the publisher's chair includes visits with Bob Guccione, Paul Newman, and Jrgen Habermas. Along the way, Allen Ginsberg sleeps on the floor, formerly blacklisted members of the Hollywood Ten defame each other, and Norman Mailer claims he's never sold out.

From Booklist
Part memoir and part commentary on the state of opinion journals and American politics, Navasky, publisher of the Nation and a journalism professor, offers a scintillating look at his life and career. He recalls his escapades at Yale Law School, where he started the satirical magazine Monocle, beginning his long and sometimes hilarious efforts at providing lively commentary on national events and staying afloat financially. He recalls his association with rising young writers and commentators, including Calvin Trillin, Nora Ephron, and Ralph Nader, and his experiences as a freelancer, including work for the New York Times. All he learned about the magazine trade, harnessing literary talent, maintaining honest debate about social issues, and keeping the bills paid proved helpful when the chance came to own and operate the Nation, America's oldest weekly magazine. He offers fascinating stories of publishing giants and political personalities, including his magazine opponent William F. Buckley. As the trend toward profit-driven consolidation of the media threatens the free flow of opinions, Navasky's perspective is timely and witty. Vanessa Bush

excellent book
By E. M. Uprichard
A riveting tale of the world of opinion magazines. Not for everyone, perhaps, but if you have ever been interested in what it takes to publish a magazine, this book portrays it well. But the real selling point is that it's beautifully written. He's funny, clever, bright, and charming. You get a serious look at his life as well as his work and it's for this reason that the book is excellent.

Preserving a National Treasure
By MZ
This longish chronicle of Mr. Navasky's stewardship of the weekly periodical The Nation is entertaining and satisfying, if a bit too rich in detail. He is an adroit and witty observer and writer, and maintains just enough distance and objectivity as he tells the story of the long-beloved liberal journal of opinion (it was founded in 1865), and how its fate fell into his lap. The magazine couldn't have fallen into more capable hands. A rare commodity, the journal of opinion has a distinguished if rocky history in America, and Navasky capably describes how it survives in a climate permeated by capitalism and the profit motive.

He is anything but a cockeyed optimist; he's been to Harvard Business School, dined with movers and shakers and major philanthropists, and has a good practical head for business; but he has managed to remain a "purist" in the right sense: He stands square on the principle that the editor and the publisher (or benefactor) must not interfere with each other. He has made many famous and influential connections along the way, including with Paul Newman--whose meeting with him, engineered by E. L. Doctorow, makes up one of the more satisfying anecdotes in the book; but he is anything but a name-dropper.

The book tells the story of how Victor Navasky kept the beloved magazine afloat by the force of his wits, always keeping a bemused detachment and a sense of humor, and a seemingly endless series of plausible backup plans. As serious as his subject is--the ability to keep serious and truthful debate available before the thinking public even in the face of well-funded opposition--often strong political opposition--Navasky keeps the tone light and cheery. It's not that he enjoys a good fight; more, that he is a capable navigator, disarming his foes with his intelligence and logic (and undoubtedly, his charm), possessing a good practical sense of what's possible, making his case and usually winning it; and finding ever more resourceful ways to keep the treasured weekly journal alive and even thriving.

Big Bucks for Little Bang

The actual amount of content in this book is laughable. You're effectively paying $1 per page of content in a small 8"x8" book. Most pages are generic project management tables you could easily find on Wikipedia. Extremely overpriced for its value.

Poorly written with a lot of excess language and a fair number of grammatical errors and typos typical it seems to the HIT literature field. A valuable resource but painfully hard to read and absorb.

Dave does NOT say that the stock market has made 12%, he says he has MUTUAL FUNDS that have AVERAGED 12% since their inception in 1934... do a search and look it up yourself. It actually 11.8 or something like that. Sometimes people hear what they want to hear and not what someone else SAID.

Not appropriate for Schools
By Susan T.
I am a high school teacher. Our school recently began a personal finance class - using this text as the foundation for the class.

When I thumbed through the book, I was really disappointed. I am a big Dave Ramsey fan in my personal life. Debt is dumb, buy what you can pay for, etc. However, I don't think that his dogmatic message of 'my way or the highway' is appropriate for a school curriculum. Let me be more specific:

1) Dave is a proud Christian, which I respect. However, I didn't like that, in his chapter about saving, he puts giving as the first thing you should do with your money. This isn't necessarily wrong, but it shouldn't be a textbook answer in a public school. Giving should certainly be mentioned as a worthwhile option, but Dave's personal values are being forced into the classroom here.

2) Dave likes to say that the stock market, over a long period, has reliably returned an average of 12% per year. First of all, I challenge anybody to give me proof of that. 9 or 10% I can believe, but 12? Although these are only a few percentage points apart, they make an enormous difference when compounded over 30 or 40 years. Even worse, Dave NEVER mentions the toll that inflation will take on that money over time. If inflation averages 3%, suddenly that 12 becomes 9 and that 10 becomes 7. So, when he maps out the effect of investing for the high school student and lures them in with 12% returns, A) he is being unrealistic about the 12%, and B) he doesn't say boo about inflation.

Dave has done great things for peoples' attitudes about personal finance. I am an avid listener that believes he does more good than harm. However, he doesn't tell the whole story. Those that are ignorant about his factual omissions have only themselves to blame for not doing their own research. Yet, when it comes to choosing a text for public schools, we have to do a better job of examining the messages that are sent to our young people.

Merging real stories with theory, research, and practice, a prominent scholar offers a new approach to teaching and learning for every stakeholder in urban education.

Drawing on his own experience of feeling undervalued and invisible in classrooms as a young man of color, and merging his experiences with more than a decade of teaching and researching in urban America, award-winning educator Christopher Emdin offers a new lens on an approach to teaching and learning in urban schools. He begins by taking to task the perception of urban youth of color as unteachable, and he challenges educators to embrace and respect each student's culture and to reimagine the classroom as a site where roles are reversed and students become the experts in their own learning.

Putting forth his theory of reality pedagogy, Emdin provides practical tools to unleash the brilliance and eagerness of youth and educators alike - both of whom have been typecast and stymied by outdated modes of thinking about urban education. With this fresh and engaging new pedagogical vision, Emdin demonstrates the importance of creating a family structure and building communities within the classroom, using culturally relevant strategies like hip-hop music and call-and-response, and connecting the experiences of urban youth to indigenous populations globally. Merging real stories with theory, research, and practice, Emdin demonstrates how by implementing the "Seven C's" of reality pedagogy in their own classrooms, urban youth of color benefit from truly transformative education.

Lively, accessible, and revelatory, For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood...and the Rest of Y'all Too is the much-needed antidote to traditional top-down pedagogy and promises to radically reframe the landscape of urban education for the better.

Review
“The most important work of pedagogy I’ve read in ten years...Dr. Emdin’s humane, and more importantly, effective practices, filled me with great hope and excitement to keep engaging with the community in which I teach.”
—John Warner, Inside Higher Ed

“For White Folks ultimately teaches the unlearned lesson that a hip-hop people’s critical perspective must matter in order for authentic teaching and learning to take place, but more importantly the book offers a bigger case for colleges to make room for other hip-hop scholars.”
—Dr. Andre Perry, The Hechinger Report

“Dr. Chris Emdin...inspired me to become fearless while teaching for social justice. His commitment to young people showed me that integrity, humility and hope are three of the greatest principles a person can possess.”
—Bryan Mooney, contributor PBS NewsHour’s Education Lounge

“As the cries to recognize the relevance of Black lives in this country grow louder...Emdin’s advice about how to more effectively serve students (people) of color is a reminder that recognizing their humanity is a critical first step.”
—Diverse: Issues in Higher Education

“Emdin’s For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood...and the Rest of Y’all Too is a brilliant, blistering, and bracing call to arms for those who teach and learn in urban America. Pivoting effortlessly from street vernacular to sophisticated theory without losing the common touch—or the lovely language and lucid thought—Emdin reminds us that the children and young people who throng our urban schools are worthy of every attempt to sharpen their minds and prepare them for a satisfying life far beyond the classroom. If you’re looking for the revolutionary meaning, and imaginative transformation, of teaching for the real America, you’re holding it in your hands! Christopher Emdin is Jonathan Kozol with swag!”
—Michael Eric Dyson, author of The Black Presidency: Barack Obama and the Politics of Race in America

“Emdin’s For White Folks is essential reading for all adults who work with black and brown young people...Filled with exceptional intellectual sophistication and necessary wisdom for the future of education.”
—Imani Perry, author of Prophets of the Hood: Politics and Poetics in Hip-Hop

“From hip-hop to high theory, the journey Emdin takes us on is at once critical and compassionate, analytical and actionable. Through rich stories and well-developed frameworks, For White Folks offers a compelling and accessible road map for anyone (not just white folks!) teaching twenty-first-century urban youth. It also confirms Emdin’s reputation as one of the most important education scholars of our generation.”
—Marc Lamont Hill, author of Beats, Rhymes, and Classroom Life: Hip-Hop Pedagogy and the Politics of Identity and Distinguished Professor of Africana Studies at Morehouse College

“A generation ago Ntozake Shange gave us a ‘choreopoem.’ Today, Christopher Emdin offers us a ‘pedagopoem.’ This volume is a powerful dance of teaching and art. It engages both the art and science of what teachers must do to be successful with all students. It is simultaneously lyrical and analytic, scientific and humanistic, a work of the heart and the mind. It belongs in every teacher’s library!”
—Gloria Ladson-Billings, the Kellner Family Distinguished Chair in Urban Education, University of Wisconsin–Madison

From the Preface

I have always been fascinated by the brilliant theater piece For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf, by Ntozake Shange. I was first drawn to this powerful work by its colorful cover, and I fell in love with it when I began to read the powerful prose. As a teenager, it was the title that affected me most. Seeing the word enuf in print, on the cover of a book, meant the world to me. It was bold and provocative—and it comforted me to know that someone from outside the four-block radius I called home knew this word. Enuf and enough are very different words. They have the same meaning, can be used in the same context, but each has very different significance to those who employ them. Enuf sits comfortably in the subtitle of a book like For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide, allowing the work to call out to those for and about whom it is written. Its presence in the book title indicates that there is no political correctness, no tainting of the truth, and no hiding of what needs to be said. It prepares the reader for the substance of the text.
In many ways, this book draws from the traditions set forth by Shange. While it is neither a collection of poems and stories nor a theater piece, its intentions are similar. The title works toward invoking necessary truths and offering new ways forward. It is clearly intended for “white folks who teach in the hood.” But it is also for those who work with them, hire them, whose family members are taught by them, and who themselves are being, or have been, taught by them.

In short, this book is for people of all colors who take a particular approach to education. They may be white. They may be black. In all cases, they are so deeply committed to an approach to pedagogy that is Eurocentric in its form and function that the color of their skin doesn’t matter. When I say that their skin color doesn’t matter, I am not dismissing the particular responsibilities of privileged groups in societies that disadvantage marginalized groups. I am also not discounting the need to discuss race and injustice under the fallacy of equity. What I am suggesting is that it is possible for people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds to take on approaches to teaching that hurt youth of color. Malcolm X described this phenomenon in a powerful speech about the house Negro and the field Negro in the slave South. He described the black slave who toiled in the fields and the house Negro who worked in the white master’s house. He noted that at some point, the house Negro became so invested in the well-being of the master that the master’s needs and concerns took preeminence over his own needs and that of the field Negro. This is the equivalent of the black educator so invested in the structure and pedagogies of the traditional school system that the needs of black and brown students become secondary to maintaining the status quo. For the “white” educator, this investment in traditional schooling is often generational, following the beliefs of parents and grandparents with college degrees and ideas about what school should look like. The point here is that there are both black and white people who can be classified as “white folks”—in that they maintain a system that doesn’t serve the needs of youth in the hood.

“The hood” is often identified as a place where dysfunction is prevalent and people need to be saved from themselves and their circumstances. The hood may be urban, rural, densely or sparsely populated, but it has a number of shared characteristics that make it easy to recognize. The community is often socioeconomically disadvantaged, achievement gaps are prevalent, and a very particular brand of pedagogy is normalized. In these communities, and particularly in urban schools, African American and Latino youth are most hard hit by poverty and its aftereffects. For example, in Atlanta, 80 percent of African American children have been reported to live in conditions of high poverty, compared with 29 percent of their Asian peers and 6 percent of their white peers. In fact, the largest twenty school districts in the nation enroll 80 percent minority students, compared with 42 percent in all school districts. In cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami, urban schools enroll less than 10 percent Anglo students, even though the teachers are overwhelmingly white. In New York public schools, over 70 percent of high school youth are students of color, while over 80 percent of public high school teachers in the state are white.

While some may use these statistics to push for more minority teachers, I argue that there must also be a concerted effort to improve the teaching of white teachers who are already teaching in these schools, as well as those who aspire to teach there, to challenge the “white folks’ pedagogy” that is being practiced by teachers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds.

Quite disappointing
By Amazon Customer
I was disappointed. Having taught in an urban, and chronically underperforming district (and school), I was seeking insight when I purchased Emdin's book, as I prepared to return to teaching. I read the Introduction, and was intrigued. However, as I began to read the book, I found that he, while accusing "white" teachers of stereotyping "students of color", did the same in his writing. He assigns one "culture" to students of color, and the prevailing message is one of an alignment with hip hop, rap, and the art of dressing well when you cannot feel good about your life otherwise.

As I do with most books, I kept a sharpened pencil in hand, and responded to the words of the author I found that I spent so much time responding Edmin's narrow point of view about teachers and students in urban environments, I wore two pencils to the nub, and I had only read three chapters. While some might argue that the book had an impact on me, so I felt the need to respond to the author's statements, I would respond that my time is better spent reading Greenleaf's Servant Leadership, and continuing with Proust. There are only so many hours in the day...and devoting any more time to Edmin and his limited vision would be folly.

Because I questioned my perspective, I accessed Edmin's website, and clicked on his blog. There had not been any new postings since 2014. Is this book an essay in narrow minded self absorption and a path to booking engagements? I still don't know. I tried to find out more about Edmin, but the interviews in the book focus primarily on his conversations with white teachers. What do the teachers of color think of him? How many years did he teach in urban environments before he moved to teacher education departments at the university level (Columbia)?

Further, I watched several of Edmin's presentations through TED, and was again, disappointed. They were lackluster, and predictable in his rap renditions at the beginning, and his comments about how to engage students. Has he booked too many speaking engagements (he has one upcoming in Moreno Valley CA) to present in a fresh, insightful, and energetic manner that he expects of teachers? Again...I remain confused.

So, the completed book will find its way to my bookshelf, I was, however, interested in many of the resources listed in the Notes section of the book. I do not view the purchase of the book as a waste of money, but I closed the book feeling disheartened at his assessments of the needs of the students in urban educational environments.

Great book!
By Amazon Customer
I was required to read this for a staff book club and I believe Emden does a really good job of giving concrete examples of how you can relate to students of color in a classroom setting. I will definitely be implementing some of the tips he provided.

Hugely Disappointed
By J. S. Radford
I used the original version of this book back 40 years ago when the co-author was Usinger ("Sierra Nevada Natural History" (1963) by Storer and Usinger). I loved that thing and annotated it variously and color coded the page edges for quick reference to groups of species.

So I found that my cherished tome had been updated and "improved" and it was a no-brainer to buy.

What a disappointment!

Admittedly, I have not used this new book yet (just came today) but I am greatly put off by it's layout and poor graphics, compared to the old version. The old version was SO much more accessible with full page comparisons of species drawings for quick assessment and ID. It had weak color photos but they are better than the new ones. THAT is inexcusable considering how far (light years) photography and printing have advanced in the 41 years between editions. The new version has information scattered about and comparisons not so nearly ready-to-hand as the 1963 book.

Anybody use BOTH versions? I'd be interested in comments by people who knew and used the 1963 book and have used this one.

REVIEWS: I find it revealing that after 11 years (!!!) there are only 7 reviews of this book. Millions go to the Sierra every year and hundreds of thousands look for guide books such as this. SEVEN reviews??? That in itself is very telling.

I have John Muir Laws' guide book, which is beautifully illustrated and intensely and very usefully organized for quick ID of all manner of Sierra biota. My reason for buying the new Storer and Usinger update (w/o Usinger but deliberate revision of the old book) was that I missed the commentary that Laws lacks. The Laws book is crammed full of illustration, beautifully rendered; but it has almost no info beyond the line or two or phrase or two immediately next to a drawing. I yearned for the coherently organized text of Storer and Usinger (1963) with careful species descriptions including life form, habitat, range, etc., etc.

I'm stuck with Laws. It is a wonderful though lacking book. I won't take both books on backpacking treks (both are very heavy). So I will just donate the new Storer book to the book sale. I don't think I will ever use it in the field.

A useful guide

Bought this book for some friends, and they've gotten quite a bit of use out of it for identifying trees and wildlife in the numerous parks in the Sierra Nevada near where they live. Sounds like a winner to me.

A great reference guide with a history of its own
By gregger
This book, on its own, has quite a bit of history. The short entries have a lot of character and information. They definitely align better with the localities of the Sierra Nevada better than more general books of flora and fauna. There are more detailed books about wildflowers in the area. However, the range of coverage is pretty amazing. It definitely has answered quite a few questions that, even after 20+ years of visiting the same area, weren't exactly clear.

A nice resource for anyone written in an entertaining and engaging way.

Professionals need this book.
By Michael BEIRING
All medical doctors, counselors, teachers, school administrators, parents, friends of those suffering from ADD or ADHD - need to read this book written by a doctor who has successfully treated 1000s of patients with this problem. His approach to comprehensive and addresses the causes of the problem rather than the problem. Use of drugs are counter-indicated for though they may help short-term, they cause lasting difficulties. As a counselor specializing with alcohol and drugs, I have seen countless individuals who were placed on drugs to address this problem turn to alcohol and other drugs as a result. This is a needed read.
