Processes of change and learning are seen in a new perspective and it is shown that expert practices depend on how persons conduct their everyday lives. To grasp this, Dreier developed a theory of persons that is based on how they conduct their lives in social practice. This theory is grounded in critical psychology and social practice theory and is also relevant for understanding other expert practices such as education.

About the Author
Ole Dreier is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Copenhagen, where he received both his MA and his PhD. He is a leading scholar in activity theory and critical psychology in Europe and combines work on the development of theory with research directed at developing practices in the fields of psychotherapy, health care, and education. He is a member of the Danish interdisciplinary Center for Health, Humanity, and Culture and an approved specialist in psychotherapy and supervision. Dreier has held the Wilhelm-Wundt chair in Leipzig and has been affiliated with universities in Mexico, Germany, and the United States. He is a member of the International Society for Theoretical Psychology and the International Society for Cultural and Activity Research.

JAMES L. ROARK (Ph.D., Stanford University) is the Samuel Chandler Dobbs Professor of History at Emory University. He has written and edited four books, including, with Michael P. Johnson, Black Masters: A Free Family of Color in the Old South (1984).

MICHAEL P. JOHNSON (Ph.D., Stanford University) is a professor of history at the Johns Hopkins University. He has written or edited six books, including No Chariot Let Down: Charleston’s Free People of Color on the Eve of the Civil War (1984) and Reading the American Past.

PATRICIA CLINE COHEN (Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley) is professor of history at the University of California at Santa Barbara. She has written three books including The Murder of Helen Jewett: The Life and Death of a Prostitute in Nineteenth-Century New York (1998).

SARAH STAGE (Ph.D., Yale University) is professor of women’s studies at Arizona State University West. She has written three books, including Rethinking Women and Home Economics in the Twentieth Century (1997).

A book that mixes the essential along with the non-essential

I am a 3.7 GPA 2nd year University Student and this book was a very mediocre read. I think it mixes too many trivial, non-essential facts along with more important information. Good luck if your professor decides to use tests made available to teachers from the publisher online! My professor gave our class a timed test downloaded from the publisher and most of the students did very poorly even though it was OPEN BOOK! I only did well because I tend to remember trivial facts. For example, one of the questions asked the fraction of Boston's land owned by the richest 5% of Bostonians in 1770! (The answer was 1/2.) Who on earth needs to retain that information! Also, the California Indian tribe named the Chumash appears on one of the publisher's tests. I think the book does a poor job of separating essential from non-essential American history.

Each chapter starts with a short section that considers the relevant anatomy and physiology of that portion of the eye. Following a consideration of diagnostic tests, clinical features are described and illustrated by a wealth of high-quality full-colour images. Medical and surgical management are then discussed for each condition. Conditions of the dog and cat are mostly considered separately, except where there are close similarities.

The last two chapters of the Manual briefly describe ocular conditions of rabbits and exotic species (primates, rodents, birds, reptiles and fish), with emphasis on the commoner disorders and those that differ markedly from the conditions already described for the dog and cat.

Good practical reference

This book is recently published, April 2015, and it covers Nagios, Ganglia, Hadoop monitoring and monitoring best practices.

The first part is rightfully devoted to Nagios. Nagios is covered quite in depth: install, verification and configuration. It gives you the right balance: it does not say everything that there is in a Nagios manual, but tells you sufficient information to install Nagios and prepare it to monitor specific Hadoop daemons, ports, and hardware.

The same goes for Ganglia: it is covered in sufficient detail for one to be able to install and run, with enough attention to Hadoop specifics.

What I did not find in the book, and what could be useful, is the fact that both Nagios and Ganglia are installed by the leading distributions: Cloudera Manager, Hortonworks Ambari and MapR. With these, one does not have to install and not much to configure, so it would have helped to apply the lessons learned to the specific configuration in each distribution. Nevertheless, there are enough companies who prefer to roll their own when it comes to Hadoop management and monitoring, and for whom it would be helpful to learn the install. Anyway, sometimes things don’t work as planned, and it is always good to know what’s under the hoot.

Now comes the overview of Hadoop daemons, YARN framework and Nagious server that comes with it. Here the books covers all that we might want to monitor, and how to connect Nagios and Ganglia with it. The book ends with a couple pages of best practices.

All in all, it is a worthwhile overview. Its only competitor would be “Hadoop Operations” by Eric Sammer, but the reviewed book is dedicated to monitoring and nothing else, so it covers some areas that Eric’s book does not. One can wish for some more material, and it may come in a second edition. Meanwhile, anybody who deals with monitoring Hadoop will find something here. Add your own experience, put it in a blog – guest posters welcome – and you can make Hadoop behave.

Reference for Hadoop administrators and practitioners

After setting up a Hadoop cluster the next important task is to check how it operates in order to learn about failures and the ways to prevent them. This short book describes tools, checks and metrics needed to accomplish this task. Ganglia and Nagios - monitoring tools chosen by the author - are described in detail. Hadoop administrators are the main target audience of this book, though other Hadoop professionals may find it useful as a reference, too, because despite of its slim size, the book is full of Linux commands, installation instructions and diagrams greatly facilitating the learning process.

I loved the content coverage of this book. Author has made sure to cover all the points briefly and detailed explanation wherever needed. Loved the topics like tools available for monitoring Hadoop, best practices and my personal favorite HDFS and MapReduce checks. Linux commands makes Hadoop admin and other users life easier. Graphical representation of topics is simple and understandable by all users. Packt always amazes us with each new book. It focuses on niche skills area where reader needs more reference books.

Groundbreaking, Earth-Embracing Work

We are very fortunate indeed to have this book in print, in paperback. Sensitive and articulate, poet and Professor Annis Pratt explores the classic literary genre, the Bildungsroman, the young man's journey into the world and hence into himself, from the perspective of women characters in women's literature.

In doing so, she unveils the fact that women's challenges and tasks in poetry and life are different from men's and yield different fruit, necessary fruit. Her conclusion that one contemporary endpoint for women's individuation process can entail an encounter with an inner "green-world lover," describes a hopeful and erotic alternative to a stereotypical constricted adaptation.

Pratt's observation of the emergence of the "green-world lover archetype" in women's poetry goes beyond deconstructionist fantasies into the realm of finding meaning and purpose while planted right in the middle of life our lives on earth. Her observations also predict the possibility of a living reality that bridges the gap between the Knower and the Known, invites the emergence of the Self in relationship, and describes the concept of Intersubjectivity, now current in contemporary psychology.
