About the Author

Jocelyn Bellemare received his Ph.D in Industrial Engineering at �cole Polytechnique de Montr�al. He is currently a professor in the marketing department at University of Quebec at Montr�al. His areas of expertise include fashion product development, production management, mass customization, and fashion marketing.

Serge Carrier received his Ph.D in Administration at the University of Quebec at Montreal. He is currently a professor in the Department of Management and Technology at University of Quebec at Montr�al. His areas of expertise include IT in fashion/clothing, standardization of sizes, and fashion marketing.

Frank T. Piller has headed the Technology and Innovation Management Group at RWTH Aachen University since 2007. Earlier, he worked at the MIT Sloan School of Management and was an assistant professor of management at the TUM Business School (1999-2004). Frank Piller graduated with a Ph.D. in operations management from the University of W�rzburg in 1999. His post-doctoral Habilitation degree is from the TUM Business School. Frank Piller has worked as a consultant and delivered executive workshops for many international companies, including several DAX30 and Fortune 500 corporations. Management-trend-watcher Stuart Crainer (author of The 75 Greatest Management Decisions Ever Made, 1999) has called Trompenaars one of the "new gurus." Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner, a British management researcher, are partners in an Amsterdam-based consulting firm that specializes in cross-cultural management and training. They are also authors of The Seven Cultures of Capitalism (1993) and Riding the Waves of Culture (1994). These two books were among the first to detail how different national cultures affect corporate culture and organizational behavior. It explores six culture-defining dimensions and their reverse images (universalism-particularism, individualism- communitarianism, specificity-diffusion, achieved status-ascribed status, inner direction- outer direction, and sequential time-synchronous time) and discusses them as alternative ways of coping with life's-and business's-exigencies. About the Author
Fons Trompenaars is a world expert on international management and the author of the global bestseller, "Riding the Waves of Culture", which has hundred of thousands of copies and has been translated into a dozen languages. He is the founder and director of Trompenaars Hampden-Turner (THT), a renowned consulting firm in the field of intercultural management. Fons is author or co-author of eleven bestselling books on culture and business, innovation and leadership.

Maarten Nijhoff Asser is a consultant at THT, where he manages the Cambridge, MA office. He graduated from the University of Amsterdam with a degree in international organizations and intellectual property. He has an MBA in Innovation, Strategy, Information and Technology. Maarten's areas of expertise include the facilitation of change management processes at senior management level and the development of scenario planning workshops. An good introduction to Cultural Dimensions

Building and expanding on Hofstede's five dimensions of culture, Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner present a model of culture and cultural differences that is both sensible and eminently useful. While Hofstede may be the man who pioneered cultural research in management, Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner are the men who popularized it within the business world.

The six dimensions of culture proposed are simple to understand and relate to. With the numerous examples given throughout the book, cultural encounters suddenly make sense and previously taken for granted 'issues', annoyances, and differences when dealing with other cultures are explained and analyzed. While some of the six dimensions introduced are in some ways similar to Hofstede's, five cultural dimensions (for example individualism vs. communitarism); however, the authors also introduce additional dimensions and sometimes expand Hofstede's in ways that make it easier for the reader to understand the differences among cultures.

While many scholars claim that the authors' research is not rigorously scientific as that of Hofstede for example, however, it remains a landmark in the field of culture research in management. Perhaps more importantly, it is more accessible to managers and trainers due to the simplicity of the writing style and the numerous examples scattered throughout the book. Overall, a highly readable and useful book that should become essential reading for students of International Business.

For people in a hurry and looking for a 'tool box' for dealing with cultural differences; 'Riding the Waves of Culture' by the same authors may be a better option.

Don't be put off by this book's daunting terminology. Beneath the author's unrestrained use of labels like universalism, particularism, individualism, communitarianism, specificity and diffuseness, lies an insightful analysis of cultural differences. After defining various nationalities under a host of polysyllabic headings, authors Charles M. Hampden-Turner and Fons Trompenaars illustrate the differences between them using engaging and easy-to-understand scenarios and stories from popular culture. The end goal of each of these sections is to explain to international business managers how cultural dilemmas can be reconciled.

A must read for multicultural managers

I have read this book 3 times only to find that the book is rich of information on how we can do business internationally. I am impressed by the comprehensiveness of the writers' survey which covers more than 40 thousand respondents from 50 different countries. The book also gives me new insights on how people of different values, norms and belief can reconcile the inherent cultural differences to build a dynamic relationship whithin a culturally diversed organisation. I recommend this book for managers and everybody who work in multinational business.

EXCELLENT BIBLE and STUDY TOOL!!!!

I bought this Bible recently and it is easily my most favorite of all the Bibles I have in which to study. The Bible is large, so it's too difficult to carry around to congregation, but is excellent for indepth studying at home; it gives exact word-for-word translations from Genesis to Revelation and I have found a deeper understanding and revelation of G-d's word through reading this Bible. I would highly recommend it.

This book is packed with info but I'm having trouble knowing how to use it. This is probably too advanced for a beginning student and the print is a little small for the older student. The price was very reasonable for a book with this much info.

Readable, Enlightening, and Helpful

As a man who has been married nearly 50 years, I am not in the primary audience for Hard to Get. However, I feel that I benefited greatly from reading the book. It is clearly and gracefully written and steers a fine middle course between dry scholarship and breathless flippancy. It illuminates some of the profound changes in society that have occurred since my peers and I were in our twenties.

Getting to know the young women whose experiences are recounted in Hard to Get makes it clear that there is no simple prescription for attaining healthy and rewarding intimate relationships. Nevertheless, the book suggests real ways that I can help the parents and other caregivers of our grandson and, especially, our granddaughters to prepare those wonderful children tor the complexities and contradictions that are a necessary part of growing into mature adulthood.

A meaningful guide, and reminder you're not alone

This was a great read for me. I found it so helpful to hear stories from the women interviewed, about tough aspects of love and sexuality that are not so often discussed. This really lifted the curtain and helped me gain a fresh perspective on my own challenges and those of my peers. I feel lucky to have found this book on the earlier side of my twenties. This decade, and the ones to follow, are taking on a brighter outlook, thanks to what I learned reading this.

Also good to know - the author is a psychoanalyst who uses that vocabulary and has developed the book in a relatively academic style. It was still very approachable, and I personally benefited from the combination of theory and research that develops the book.

Brilliantly Written, Insightful

Bell's book addresses something critical: understanding the mishmash of messages society generates toward twenty something women, as well as how they internalize and navigate these often confusing and contradictory messages.

Unlike other books on similar topics, Bell is neither preachy, condescending or dry, which remains a strong point for her book. I particularly found Bell's writing style fantastic - you do not have to be a scholar to read this book and derive enjoyment. Her writing is clear, insightful, and deeply appreciative of the complexities of her subject and the women she interviewed.

I greatly enjoyed book and have heartily recommended it to others.

What I would love to see next is a similar work on how - for heterosexual relationships - this shift in messaging and self-perception in women is affecting their male counterparts.

Fatty! Big Nose! Squirt!

Mr. Rude is not just very rude, he is "extraordinarily rude!" If he sees someone with a big nose, he will tell them. If he sees someone that is overweight, he calls them "Fatty" along with making a very disrespectful comment! Mr. Rude does not have a Welcome Mat! No, he has crossed that out and written "GO AWAY" so you can imagine how mad he is when Mr. Happy, after witnessing Mr. Rude's behavior, comes to visit.

No matter how much Mr. Rude rants and rages, Mr. Happy just sits there smiling at him. How long does Mr. Happy stay? What does Mr. Rude discover he has by the end? You'll have to read the book to find out but let me tell you that this is a GREAT book for showing children how not to behave. When they slip up and find themselves being rude, reminding them of the story will bring a smile and hopefully a change of attitude pretty pronto!

My 4-year old loves the Mr. Men series, but Mr. Rude is his favorite. The storyline and illustrations are very similar to the animated series.

We love them and will buy the whole collection

My dad bought me one of these books every time he went out of town on business. I loved them then, and I read them now to my 5-year-old. It is so fun to collect all of the books and they are very reasonable. They are also adorable stories with cute, useful morals. We love the art in the books and try to draw our own pictures later. My son absolutely loves these books as a fast, entertaining read each night. We will buy them all. ;)

I bought this instead of the textbook

So most of my courses in school have required us to purchase books that we don't use. Argh! I would not be fooled again so I purchased this pocket guide and found the PDF older version of this book and it was perfect. I rarely used this book (see a theme here) but when I did there was a wealth of information coupled with the free older pdf version of the book. I recommend this pocket guide over the textbook and I will be carrying this in my white coat for my FM rotations.

P.S. Delivery was fast and what I wanted (new condition).

A nice surprise

I was very skeptical at first because of the size of the pocket guide; however, I am glad that I ordered it anyway. Over 400 pages seem ridiculous but Bate's has really done it. The pages are easy to read, the print is big enough, it helps having the main points right out of the regular size book, and it fits in your pocket. I highly recommend this to anyone having to do history taking and physical exams (MD, APN, RN, LPN, EMT, etc).

�� I’m not sure what time it is.� This thing should record that.� I woke a few minutes ago.� It’s still dark.� I don’t know how long I was out.
�� The snow is spilling in through the windshield. It’s frozen across my face.� Hard to blink.� Feels like dried paint on my cheeks.� It just doesn’t taste like dried paint.��
�� I’m shivering…and it feels like somebody is sitting on my chest.� Can’t catch my breath. Maybe broke two or three ribs.� Might have a collapsed lung.
�� The wind up here is steady, leaning against the tail of the fuselage…or what’s left of it.� Something above me, maybe a branch, is slapping the plexi-glass.� Sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard.� And more cold air is coming in behind me.� Where the tail used to be.��
�� I can smell gas.� I guess both wings were still pretty full of fuel.�
�� I keep feeling like I want to throw up.�
�
�� A hand is wrapped around mine. The fingers are cold and calloused.� There’s a wedding band, worn thin around the edges.� That’s Grover.
�� He was dead before we hit the treetops.� I’ll never understand how he landed this thing without killing me, too.

�� There was a dog here somewhere.� All teeth and muscle.� Real short hair.� About the size of a loaf of bread.� Makes snotty, gurgling sounds when he breathes.� Looks like he’s jacked up on speed.� Wait…�
�� ‘Hey, boy…Wait…no.� Not there. Okay, lick but don’t jump.� What’s your name?� You scared?� Yeah…me, too.’
�� I can’t remember his name.

�� I’m back…was I gone long?� There’s a dog here.� Buried between my coat and armpit.

�� He’s shivering and the wrinkles around his eyes are quivering.� Whenever the wind howls, he jumps up and growls at it.

very good story!

Most reviews give a breakdown of the storyline. Two people trapped start to talk to each other about their lives and start to make realizations about their lives becase of their perilous situation. Ashley and Ben are two people that we get to know very very well and for me that makes a fantastic book. Since they are stranded we have a lot of time to delve into each of their minds. I love characterization and done well. I say that in nearly every review but it's what makes me love reading. I want to know the people I'm reading about otherwise I don't care about what happens to them. A fantastic plot can't fix the lack of character development for me. This book has both. I'm normally not a big fan of Christian fiction but dang if Mr. Martin doesn't do it very well without beating a bible over one's head. I really enjoyed this one.

Fantastic Read

Another great book from Charles Martin! I loved this book from the first page to the last. It will pull at the heart strings like all of his other books. If you havent read a Charles Martin novel yet this is a great one to start with!

Facinating Premise--HORRIFIC Editing !

Inclement weather, cancelled commerical airline flights, and happenstance find Ashley (a soon-to-be-married writer) and Ben (a married, orthopedic surgeon)on the same charter flight. The chartered plane crashes in a wilderness area; and as the sole survivors, they are tasked with dealing with their situation.

The story is well-written, entertaining, etc. However, the editing is less than stellar; and the responsible party should be sentenced to 20-lashes-with-a-wet-noodle. C'mon! Editing oversights recur throughout the book, but a couple stand out. Page 54-Ben sleeps thirty-six hours straight through. Then on page 270, he sleeps 12 hours, the longest stretch of time he's slept since the crash. HELLO? Pg. 196-A mishap ruins his makeshift snowshoes. He dismantles them and uses the components to repair the sled. However, on pg. 243, he is wearing snowshoes again (and it is several pages further before he fortuitously finds a stash of snowshoes). This type of shoddy editing really causes disruption in the continuity of the story and makes the publishing house look second-rate.
