From Library Journal
Judith Whale provides an emotionally restrained and somewhat formal narration of Brookner's (Altered States, Audio Reviews, LJ 9/1/97) perceptive novel. Working at a London medical library, Judith Hinton is intrigued by Nick and Alix: he is a doctor who often uses the library, and she is his cultured wife who lets everyone know that she has "come down in the world." Judith is dazzled when they take her into their circle. She sees herself as an observant writer until she falls out of favor with the couple and their friends. Ultimately, this reading is uninvolving, perhaps because so many of the characters are tiresome. One wonders why Judith doesn't see through them. For larger collections.?Melody A. A sharp and moving novel
By HORAK
The novel tells in dramatic detail how Nick and Alix Fraser casually break the heart of Frances Hinton, a well-behaved and observant young woman who works in the reference library of a medical research laboratory dedicated to the study of problems of human behaviour and who longs, in her subdued way, for love. She is an orderly young woman and Spartan in her habits. If she suffers loneliness it is because she has settled for the harsh habit of dealing with all matters by herself.
And soon Frances is disappointed in love. "I knew about love and its traps ... I never speak of it" and turns to writing as a form of therapy and escape, as a way to reorder her world. She writes when she feels swamped in her solitude and hidden by it, physically obscured by it and rendered invisible. Writing is her way of piping up, of reminding people that she is here. We may well guess how much of her own personality the author put in her heroine's character.
An altogether convincing portrait of failed love and solitude, reminiscent of so many of Anita Brookner's protagonists.

The Gaelic-English Dictionary, by Colin Mark

This book fulfils a keenly-felt need for a modern, comprehensive dictionary of Scottish Gaelic into English. The numerous examples of usage and idiom in this work have been modelled on examples culled from modern literature, and encompass many registers ranging from modern colloquial speech, to more elaborate literary constructions. The main contemporary terms and idiomatic phraseology, often not available in other dictionaries, provide excellent models for easier language learning. In addition to the main dictionary, the volume contains introductory material, providing guidance on using the dictionary, spelling and pronunciation. There are also twelve useful appendices which cover not only the various parts of speech, lenition and proper nouns, but also address the more difficult issues of expressing time, direction and numerals. The clarity of the design and layout of the volume will greatly ease the process of attaining mastery of the Gaelic language.

Review
'Anyone who has tried to learn Scottish Gaelic will be aware of the lack of an up-to-date, practical dictionary. Mr Mark has plugged the gap triumphantly. I heartily recommend it.' - Victor Price, Ross-Shire Journal (31.12.03)

About the Author
Mr Colin Mark, a Classics graduate of Aberdeen University, taught in several schools over a period of forty years. During that time he took up the study of Gaelic and, within a few years, had written Gaelic Verbs (Glasgow University Press, 1986) before embarking upon the present work.

If you could have only one Gaelic dictionary, get this one.
By John D. Gressett
This is by far the most expensive Gaelic dictionary available today. It is worth the price. It has an immense store of idiomatic uses and examples that are found in no other dictionary. The entries for especially important words, such as irregular verbs, are frequently several pages long, and cover many meanings, usages and variations. The appendices alone would make a small, but very useful reference grammar.
There are only three other dictionaries with which it can be usefully compared: the two older dictionaries, those of Dwelly and MacLennan, and the recently published dictionary by Angus Watson. Mark's dictionary is much easier to read than Dwelly's; it has a smaller vocabulary coverage, but the omissions are of words that have become archaic and are now rarely, if ever, used. Examples of usage are far more numerous. MacLennan's dictionary has the advantage of being the only large dictionary with an English-to-Gaelic section. MacLennan's Gaelic-to-English section is totally outclassed by Mark's dictionary. Watson's dictionary has a much smaller vocabulary coverage than Mark's weighty tome, but has a number of definitions which are in some way better, for example "seadh", which in Watson is seen to derive from the older "is eadh", where "eadh" is the now-obsolete neuter pronoun, rendered useless by the demise of the neuter gender. Watson has only two appendices, a table of definite articles and a much longer one of irregular verbs. Mark has no comparable appendix; he puts his extensive information on the irregular verbs in the dictionary entries; he does have an extensive appendix on the Gaelic verb which is quite different from Watson's appendix.
The first dictionary that I use it Watson's - it's small size makes it easier to find an entry, but missing words very frequently send me to Mark's dictionary. Dwelly's is the last resort, when an archaic word or usage must be found. I rarely use MacLennan's dictionary now that I have the ones by Mark and Watson.

Absolutely indispensable
By T. Leigh
This is one of the very best Gaelic dictionaries, and is absolutely indispensable for the serious student of the language. It provides extensive, detailed coverage of the language as currently used in prose and the media, filling the gap between Dwelly's and modern usage. In addition, there are no fewer than twelve excellent appendices, containg all sorts of valuable information on grammar and usage, much of which isn't to be found in other dictionaries or textbooks. If you are a serious student of the Scottish Gaelic language, if you read any Gaelic literature, you need this dictionary. I use it, quite literally, almost every day.

Best Q&A for ABSITE
By 46&2
Background: I'm a general surgery resident who has taken the ABSITE four times.

After going through the Johns Hopkins, Schwartz, and Rush ABSITE reviews before, I would say this book is the best. The questions are reasonable with well explained answers. The chapters cover a variety of subjects. Many are based on clinical scenarios or no-BS quick fire questions on anatomy / physiology.

This book isn't perfect. There are some EXCEPT questions (i.e. all these are true regarding popliteal artery aneurysms EXCEPT...) which use a format that doesn't appear on standardized tests. There's a dearth of the dreaded Basic Science questions; maybe that's why I 'enjoyed' this book more than others. Statistics and Legal/Ethical questions are absent. There are no chapters specifically dealing with gynecology, urology, or ortho. On the real thing, I encountered one version with a LOT of gynecology (i.e. inappropriate amount), and another with a lot of urology. Some of these subspecialties, though, are briefly touched on in other sections like trauma (ureteral injury). Some of the answers are listed incorrectly (i.e. they put A when they meant D), though you'll be able to tell, and the authors err less than Hopkins or Schwartz.

Despite (or perhaps because of) the above, the book is quite doable and makes for a surprisingly quick way to do 1400 questions. I would contrast this to Rush where it takes 1-2 hours to slog through a chapter. Some people say the test is basically in Rush, but the test is also in Greenfield's or Sabiston's. I can read this book and remain sane.

The online version is cumbersome (and I'm a fan of on-line question banks), but it's nice to have it available if you don't want to lug the book everywhere.

My recommendation would be to use the good ol' ABSITE Review by Fiser (any edition) for an overall review with this as a way of pre-testing and solidifying information. The ABSITE Review does about as much Basic Science and subspecialty work as any general surgery resident can handle. A little bit before the test, review the ABSITE Killer if you can find a copy. Even though it's 10+ years old, there's still some trivial minutiae you can memorize from it (e.g. ENT stuff I will never treat). This book, though, was the best way for me to do questions. I would rank Schwartz second to this (Schwartz is broader) and then Hopkins. Rush is more of a textbook / Q&A hybrid.

Excellent Study Guide for the ABSITE
By Jennifer D Bishop
I've used this book for the past two years and I think it is the best review/study book on the market for the Senior ABSITE. I agree w/ prior reviews that it does not have enough Basic Science to be a stand-alone book for the Junior ABSITE and would need to be supplemented. I also agree that it is somewhat lacking in Ethics/Stats/Uro and Gyn, which could be any easy way to improve this book for its second edition.

I recommend this book to any upcoming surgery residents who will be taking the Senior ABSITE, and also think it would be a great book to buy for the Junior ABSITE if another review/study guide is used for basic science review.

I credit this book, along with the SCORE portal multiple-choice questions, for my 30 percentile increase in score between PGY3 and PGY4 if that helps anyone decide to purchase this book!

Probably the best book out there... but TOUGH
By DrDrew267
Dr Virgilio has done a terrific job of making a comprehensive question-based review of material for the Absite and boards. Overall, it covers all of the clinical aspects of general surgery which we really care about while only including pertinent questions about the specialties that we don't care about (Ortho, Urology, etc). There are a few things to keep in mind however:

1) This book is considerably more detailed than the Absite review. I consider this to be a strength. But please realize beforehand that you will feel humiliated doing the questions in this book while using the Absite Review simply because it goes into far much more detail and is more up-to-date. More often than not, when there are disagreements between the Absite review and this book, Dr Virgilio's book comes out on top, although I would still recommend referring to Cameron, etc to confirm. The Absite question book by Fiser is also child's play compared to this book.

2) Some answers are definitely controversial, but compared to the Rush Review, which takes too long and literally has so many mistakes it is useless, it is not too bad at all. Very easy to cross check with another textbook, which by the way, Dr Virgilio recommends in his foreword.

3) The question format may/may not be the same as the Absite.

All in all, I think this book will be very helpful not only for the Absite, but for the written boards as well. Well worth the money and effort.

A History of the World in 100 Objects, by Neil MacGregor

From the renowned director of the British Museum, a kaleidoscopic history of humanity told through things we have made.

When did people first start to wear jewelry or play music? When were cows domesticated and why do we feed their milk to our children? Where were the first cities and what made them succeed? Who invented math-or came up with money?

The history of humanity is a history of invention and innovation, as we have continually created new items to use, to admire, or to leave our mark on the world. In this original and thought-provoking book, Neil MacGregor, director of the British Museum, has selected one hundred man-made artifacts, each of which gives us an intimate glimpse of an unexpected turning point in human civilization. A History of the World in 100 Objects stretches back two million years and covers the globe. From the very first hand axe to the ubiquitous credit card, each item has a story to tell; together they relate the larger history of mankind-revealing who we are by looking at what we have made.

Handsomely designed, with more than 150 color photographs throughout the text, A History of the World in 100 Objects is a gorgeous reading book and makes a great gift for anyone interested in history.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, November 2011: In A History of the World in 100 Objects, Neal MacGregor, director of the British Museum, takes readers on a tour of the world by way of its material goods. From everyday items such as pots, utensils, and money to valuables such as art and jewelry, MacGregor shows that the things humans have left behind are often as rich and informative as written texts. Whether it’s a strange and unique object like a throne made of rifles from Mozambique or a medieval German crystal, or a familiar one like a sculpture of the head of Augustus or Hokusai's painting The Great Wave, MacGregor skillfully weaves each one into the fabric of the society that it came from. In that sense, the book is much more than a museum catalog: it's a hundred keyhole views into a hundred different societies from around the world and throughout history.

Review
Praise for A History of the World in 100 Objects:

“A beautiful and absorbing book, a visual history of humanity . . . filled with equally fascinating objects, some famous, some not, nearly all of them intimate, telling and strange.”
—Dwight Garner, The New York Times

“Spotlighting artworks, artifacts and documents from the British Museum’s vast collections, Neil MacGregor—the museum’s director—brilliantly elucidates and connects items ranging from Zhou Dynasty bronze vessels to Victorian tea sets, from the Rosetta Stone to etchings by David Hockney, from pieces of eight to the modern credit card. Traversing continents, cultures and epochs with perfect aplomb, it is ultimately a defense of why the universal museum remains a vital institution in today's world. This is an enthralling and profoundly humane book that every civilized person should read.”
—Jonathan Lopez, Wall Street Journal

“A brave and original undertaking . . . Each of the sections has something interesting to say, and prior knowledge of a given topic does not prevent us from gathering new insights from the text and the illustrations, and new angles of vision. Some of the images scattered through the book are so astonishing and so far from our usual perceptions that I don’t think I will ever forget them. . . . MacGregor writes with energy and flair, and this is an entertaining and informative book.”
—Jonathan Spence, The New York Review of Books

“Arresting . . . This beautifully illustrated book demonstrates how much we can learn about past societies from the things they have left behind. British Museum director MacGregor provides insightful commentaries on each of the objects in an appealing, conversational style. . . . A book to savor, full of information and surprises.”

—Kirkus Reviews

“MacGregor has done more to capture the magic and importance of history than any number of academic monographs. We are swept from Africa 2 million years ago to the dawn of the 21st century on a whistle-stop tour that avoids most of the obvious destinations but still feels enormously satisfying.”

—Sunday Times, History book of the Year

“Bound to be a popular present this Christmas . . . Everyone knows about the sculptures from the Parthenon. . . . but I was amazed by the boggle-eyed monster carved into the base of a wooden stool that once belonged to a chieftain of the largely forgotten Taino people of the Caribbean, who gave us words such as hurricane, barbecue, hammock and tobacco . . . Erudite and entertaining, monumental yet relaxed.”

—The Telegraph, Best book of the Year

“The most enlightening book of recent times.”
—The Independent

“Wonderful . . . The swirl and sweep of his story transports us to every corner of the globe, and illustrates how different cultures have always communicated, traded, and fought with one another.”
—Tom Holland, The Observer

“Marvelous . . . brilliant, engagingly written, deeply researched.”
—Mary Beard, The Guardian

“The style is authentic, personal and humorous. MacGregor demonstrates the power of objects to recover the place in history of lost civilisations.”
—Andrew Roberts, Financial Times

“None could have imagined quite how the radio series would permeate the national consciousness. Well over 12.5 million podcasts have been downloaded since the first programme and more than 550 museums around Britain have launched similar series featuring local history. . . . MacGregor’s voice comes through as distinctively as it did on radio and his arguments about the interconnectedness of disparate societies through the ages are all the stronger for the detail afforded by extra space. A book to savour and start over.”
—The Economist

An Elegant History
By William Holmes
"A History of the World in 100 Objects" began with a BBC Radio 4 program that described 100 striking objects housed in the British Museum in London. I encountered the "100 Objects" while visiting the museum in the summer of 2010, and I was delighted to learn several months later that the original radio scripts were being adapted into a book.

The result, as author Neil MacGregor reminds us, is simply "a" history of the world rather than "the" history. Each chapter tells the story of a unique object or set of objects, ranging from a hand axe and chopping tools that are more than a million years old through the modern credit card and a solar-powered lamp and charger. Some of the objects are famous, some are obscure, but each inspires its own intriguing story. Chapter by brief chapter, the book carefully and clearly describes each object, places it in its historical context, and explains what it meant (or may have meant) to the people who created, used or admired it.

The UK edition of the book is quite elegant--nearly 700 pages of high-quality paper with numerous striking color photographs showing each object from multiple vantage points. It makes a fine gift for friends and family who appreciate art, or history, or both, and it deserves pride of place on any bookshelf.

As an aside, for those interested in the original BBC Channel 4 Radio program that inspired the book, you can download each of the 100 original broadcasts on iTunes. They make a marvelous companion to the book.

Neil MacGregor - A 100 historical tales to relish and delight
By Red on Black
One of the joys of being resident in the UK is the presence of the wonderful BBC Radio 4 a channel with which listeners have a true lifelong love affair. To Dear American chums a quick scan across the internet to the BBC "i" player will find this rich source and life will be all the better for it. Radio 4 challenges, it provokes and gets as near to that much sought after but rarely achieved quality "the heart of the matter" as is humanly possible (the probing questions of presenters on the Today programme makes me think that democracy still has a fighting chance). The channel also carries many brilliant series of which "A History of the World in 100 Objects" by Neil MacGregor is a prime example, even the trailers leading up to its broadcast in January this year were great. What a pleasure therefore to have copy in the written word of this weighty book (738 pages) to accompany the series and to revisit the passion and authority of Neil MacGregor, director of the British Museum and cultivator of fabulous facts.

The whole premise underpinning this epic journey was predicated on a wicked idea conceived by Mark Damazer, then head of Radio 4 to challenge our hugely knowledgeable bods at the British Museum to undertake a somewhat mischievous and loaded exercise. Indeed on the surface any attempt to tell a rather large tale like the history of the world over a modest 2 million years in this manner seems like a piece of First Class honours inspired lunacy. "Baby and bathwater" is the phrase that comes to mind and even if the radio series and the following book were outright bilge you would at least have to give Neil MacGregor three stars for accepting the challenge and embracing with gusto the humongous concept. Yet he succeeds triumphantly and as the BBC blurb states he sets out in copious detail the sheer importance of "A chipped stone that was one of the first things ever made by human hands; a clay tablet telling the story of the great flood centuries before the Bible; a broken hunter's spear dropped by one of the earliest settlers in America; a hoard of gold abandoned in the Wars of the Roses ... every object tells a story" The use of this quote shows just how bloody difficult it is to summarize the sheer diversity of the subject matter and scale of the challenge that the author faced. I frankly remain in awe of his herculean task not least of all for his chapter on the English pepper pot dating from 350 BC which should be required reading for every child of school age. Most of all he understands the true value of encyclopaedic knowledge, in short the ability to illuminate through a fine selection of the facts while at the same time employing the skills of the story teller and then re-connecting his narratives with the present.

Certainly it is true that the hugely hyped and momentous unveiling of THE one object that defines the modern age was somewhat of a disappointment (I will not spoil it - read the book). That said you suspect that MacGregor probably faced the same horrific challenge as Douglas Adams encountered in "The Hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy" coming up with something simple but clever enough to answer the Ultimate Question. Anyway give him a break since he was probably in need of a rest by this time.

To his eternal credit it is understood that as a result of the radio series and now this book, citizens of our curious nation have been flocking to Bloomsbury to seek out the hereto unknown treasures/pleasures of the British Museum and examine for themselves the Mexican ceremonial ballgame belt (AD100-500) and yes the good old pepperpot. Satisfying the other key factor of the whole exercise is that some of more obvious choices that he could have gone for are ignored at the expense of the more quirky but equally illustrative. This then is a wonderful book, full of lavish illustrations and crystal clear maps. And yes I know that times are hard and deep cuts stalk the land but "A History of the World in 100 Objects" by Neil MacGregor is a fairly priced volume full of unparalleled treasure and should be included on all lists heading up the chimney to Santa in the next few months.

Wonderful book to read in small bites
By Jerry W Schoen
The book is extremely well written but not concise -- think of it as musings over the evolution of human civilization rather than as a history book. It is broken down into short 100 chapters making it ideal to as a relaxing read before bedtime. Only wish I would have thought to gotten the videos.
