In his Learn Ancient Greek, P.V. Jones has succeeded in offering both an enjoyable read and an effective self-teaching tool. Those looking for a 1930s discussion of adverbial phrases should save their money as this book actually does what it purports to do--it allows the dedicated reader to learn ancient Greek in an enjoyable, interesting and relaxed manner while, most importantly, promoting understanding and retention. I have a dozen Greek grammars and none is better than this. Rather than providing long lists to memorize, Jones promotes the only truly effective manner of learning any language--written exercise and repetition. Buy this book. You will not regret the choice.

A lot of fun.

A really fun way to learn an introduction to ancient Greek. It was intended for everyone as a series of newspaper articles, almost conversational, and I would recommend it to everyone -- anyone who wants to dabble in Greek, but still come away knowing something, or who wants to review their high school course, or who wants to help improve their English vocabulary.

From Curlee (Ships of the Air, 1996, etc.), a riveting history of Arctic exploration that begins, appropriately, with the Inuit, who moved into that bleak and treacherous land after the Ice Age. With little documented history of that period, the narrative plunges ahead to the stories of Pytheas, a Greek merchant of the fourth century b.c., and Saint Brendan, the Irish monk who plied the North Atlantic waters in an oxhide boat in a.d. 550, discovering icebergs and perhaps Iceland. Next came the Norsemen on their way to Vinland in North America around a.d. 1000, followed by the late 16th-century English and Dutch explorers hoping to reach China (including John Davis and his ships Sunneshine and Mooneshine). Curlee chronicles the efforts of the merchants and whalers, the labors for fortune and glory, the search for the northern passages, the misery of scurvy and arctic fever. He dwells on Fridtjof Nansen's efforts, highlights the 1845 disappearance of Sir John Franklin's party, and provides a balanced look at the quest for the North Pole featuring Peary and Cook and their vainglorious (and unwarranted) claims. Curlee rounds out this entertaining, informed history with unsensationalized episodes of cannibalism and toes snapping off to keep readers glued to the pages, and hypnotic, elemental paintings that are just as exquisite as those in his first book. Another amazing book written by an amazing author!

An amazing book written by an amazing author!

Iabsolutely loved this book! I stayed up until the early hours because I literally couldn't put it down! It was very graphic at times, it pulled me right into the thick of the story and held me there all the way through until the last page! I wasn't ready for it to end and the wait for A Shade of Dragon 3 is going to kill me!
In the beginning Theon really annoyed me because he kept comparing Michelle to Nell and vice versa. I don’t blame him though, he was so sure that Nell was his true mate, until Pythia (one of The Oracle twins) started planting seeds of doubt in his mind. She left him very confused about which girl was his true mate. Theon made it clear that he didn't want anything to do with Michelle but in order to rescue Nell he had to take her with him.
The rescue mission was very challenging for all involved, mainly because the ice dragons seem to be completely evil with no compassion at all. The majority of them are cruel and in keeping with their love of all things cold their hearts seem to be well and truly frozen solid or made of stone. Lethe seems to break the mould every now and again because he can be kind when he wants to be but he is also psychotic with very unpredictable mood swings!
Theon is beyond devastated to see how the ice dragons have treated his family and to hear of all the other fire dragons that have been captured and killed. They have been pillaging his castle and looting all of the surrounding homes and shops. The eternal winter seems as though it will never end, which is very bad news for the fire dragons. It seems impossible that they will be able to overthrow the ice dragons and reclaim their home. Is Theon strong enough to overcome all of the obstacles that have been thrown at him? All we can do is wait and see, I'm sure Bella Forrest has lots of surprises waiting for us! Thank you so much for writing another amazing book Bella, I can't wait to find out what happens next!

Beyond Amazing.

I don't even know where to begin in writing this review. I am in utter shock from the ending of this book. Complete and utter shock. Bella has, yet again, written another all encompassing book. A book that has left me with anxiety for the next book. I know I've said it before but this is a MUST READ book. My emotions were all over the place while reading it. I laughed at some of the quirky humor Theon has and bawled my eyes out in heartbreak for Nell. I love this book because we get to see a different side to each character. I felt what they were feeling. I saw what they were seeing. Bella paints the story out in such a way that you feel like you are actually living it for yourself. I adore this book.
I never in a million years would have guessed the ending we are left with though. Never! I kept trying to flip forward willing more pages to appear so I could know what happens. I have to say that this book is definitely in my top three FAVORITE books regarding The Shade Series. Without a doubt top three. I cannot get over this book. It is so so incredibly amazing.
A big shout out and five star rating for Bella! She is simply amazing. She is and will forever be my favorite author. I cannot wait to see what is in store for Theon and Nell in a Shade of Dragon 3. I don't want this spinoff series to end.

Never Fair!

Theon and Nell come from different worlds,but find themselves falling in love with one another. After Theon shows Nell his true form,she seems to love him all the. But after returning to his home land and finding that the ice dragons have taken over the kingdom nothing goes right and all that was once beautiful is all gone.

Theon can't seem to win no matter what. Seems it's time for the ice dragons to rule the kingdom. And to make matters worse, the human , Michelle, ex friend of Nell takes sides with the. Ice dragon. Will anything good come of all this. Read on in book 3 to find out

I'm a 4th grade teacher and this is a great introduction or conlusion to the water cycle. The story takes us on an adventure of where Drop the main character goes- cow's stomach, on mountain peaks, floods, coral reef, etc.

The vocabulary goes right along with water cycle and cloud vocabulary. There is also more advanced words but detailed colorful pictures for scaffolding. The kids enjoyed finding Drop on each page.

This book could also be used for geography, sequence of events, and maybe context clues or learning new vocabulary.

My only con was that it took awhile to read. You will need 30 minutes to read aloud and give kids a chance to process and share what happened on each page if you have ELLs. This is a must have for intermediate and higher grades!

Entertaining and educational

I bought this book to go with my curriculum on the water cycle. It was recommended by the state of Louisiana in one of their example units. I absolutely love this book! The illustrations are beautiful. Since the book is written as one very long poem, it adds interest to the topic of the water cycle. I would recommend it to anybody that would like an entertaining book that also educates.

A Drop Around the World

This book follows a drop of water around the world thru many watery avenues. It is interesting as well as educational for kids. My son's Montessori school had this book on their wish list so I bought it and donated it to them. I also purchased a copy for us at home. This helps teach water conservation. There isn't an actual plot or story. The drop of water runs in a stream, is drunk by a cow, comes out in her milk. It also is evaporated and returns as rain and later as snow. All the different ways that water is part of our world. My boy is 4 but this book was interesting at 3 and will continue to be of interest for more years to come. If you want your child to be environmentally aware this is an excellent book.

ABCs of Kabbalah

This is a great little introduction to the concepts and terminology of Kabbalah. A great start, which provides the basics with which one can go on to continued study. Only someone who has great understanding, as Reb Pinson does, can present these concepts with such clarity, and make them so accessible. Very well written, and thoroughly enjoyable.

This book, first found in an old bookstore, is a remarkable find and a perfect read. For those seeking a compact, thin overview of Qabala , there is no better coverage of the subject. I sent for 3 more when I read the first one, and keep them handy for memory purposes. Nothing so completes the wonder of the universe (multiverses) than Qabala, and nothing does it as well as this book.

About the Author
Peter Fauland is a professional photographer and teacher who leads workshops around the world for photography enthusiasts as well as for corporate clients. Originally from the school of classic black-and-white landscape film photography, Fauland now practices portrait, event, and architectural photography. While living in Switzerland and France for several years, he documented the construction of a complex detector system at CERN/the European Organization for Nuclear Research (Geneva) and he constructed a special hybrid camera consisting of a large-format camera system with a DSLR as the sensor. Fauland currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He believes the new generation of system cameras, such as those in the Fujifilm X-series, has “brought the work of photography back to something intimate and direct.” He adds, “If I could work with only one camera, it would be from the X100 family.”

Not enough detail to be of much value

"Mastering the Fujifilm X100T and X100S" by Peter Foulard is a relatively slim volume that tries to explain various aspects of Fuji's great X100S/T cameras, but doesn’t delve very deeply into the features and uses of the cameras and in the end is not a very satisfying book. It rates only 2-2.5 out of 5 stars.

Fauland does explain a few issues such as Dynamic Range in reasonable detail, including examples of what types of images are best suited for the various settings. But more often, he only briefly touches on an issue before moving on to the next one, frequently leaving more questions than answers. For example, the section of flash photography touches on many concepts such as built-in flash, external flash, 3rd party units, Commander Mode, Slo-Synchro, and TTL preflashes, but doesn’t go much further than brief mentions, and certainly doesn’t have enough information to help a photographer “master” flash photography with the X100 series. Even when a subject is more fully explained, there are frustrating omissions; for example, the discussion of street photography doesn’t even bring up the zone-focus technique used by a number of street photographers (and a technique for which the X100 series is well-suited). Some topics aren’t discussed or even mentioned, such as creating panoramas, creating multiple exposures, using exposure lock, and using video on the X100S.

The text is well written with a style that isn’t too technical and makes for a comfortable read. The book contains a modest number of good or excellent images, but only a few of them contain detailed information on the shooting conditions that generated them. Some images are quite poor, such as the virtually colorless image of a field and trees that is used repeatedly to demonstrate film simulations, dynamic range, and settings for shadows and highlights. The choice of this image is surprising, as it does little to demonstrate any of those concepts.

This book is not for the novice photographer—it assumes the reader is well-versed in basic photography concepts such as shutter speed, aperture, depth-of-field and ISO. It also has minimal guidance on setting up the camera, using focus modes, or composing images. But while it isn’t for novices, it isn’t really for advanced or professional photographers either, as few topics are given enough attention to educate the experienced users beyond what they would already have gathered from reading the camera manual or even just exploring the camera’s menus.

Anyone looking to get a deeper understanding of the X100S should look to one of the other books available. See my reviews of Fujifilm X100S: From Snapshots to Great Shots, The Complete Guide to Fujifilm's X100s Camera (B&w Edition), and Photographer's Guide to the Fujifilm X100S: Getting the Most from Fujifilm's Advanced Digital Camera. Given the lack of books specifically written for the X100T, getting one of the above books for the X100S and/or reading the many online resources and blog posts on the X100T would be much more productive use of time and money.

Update: A Short Course In The Classic Art of FujiFilm X100T Photography by Dennis P Curtin is a guide for the Fuji X100T, but anyone other than beginning photographers would probably not find much value in it. See my review for more details.

An Unsuccessful Effort

You would expect guidance in making the menu choices that properly set up your camera. No, that's not included. You would hope for help in figuring out flash compensation. The two pages devoted to flash don't even mention that. Instead there is a discussion of external flash offered by other companies. In short, this book fails to provide the product specific information that you want in a manual. It has helpful suggestions on digital photography, but even those are marred by the poor quality of the printing of examples. Those examples show a muddy frame in which half the picture, the foreground, is virtually black and without detail. The examples are not well chosen at all and fail to illustrate the point that the author intended. I have been using the camera for about 10 months and waited patiently for a guide book to come along. I found this disappointing. I would return it if I could.

Not Quite "Mastering" the X100T/S

I'd have to agree with the first review left for this book. In every section I was left wanting more detail. He should call this "Interpreting the User Manual of the Fuji X100T/S". This is all he is really doing. Going through all the features in the manual and elaborating on them with a bit of his own commentary. This book would be perfect for someone who is somewhat new to digital cameras and photography, but hardly "Mastering" the X100T.

I'll give him 3 stars due to the Scenarios section being useful, and including instruction on using the iPhone app to control and share pictures (as I don't think there is a manual for this app anywhere that I am aware of). Don't get me wrong, I DID learn some things that I didn't already know, and the book is well presented and written, it just doesn't live up to its title.
