Secret #1: Hiring Managers and Hiring Companies Are Trying to Eliminate You From Consideration
By Thomas M. Loarie
"Job search" and those who are "in-transition" are near and dear to my heart as a result of the ministry I have been involved in since the [...] bust in 2001. My colleagues and I have assisted over 500 C-level executives, managers and professionals across many industry domains in defining and finding their life's next chapter.

As a "Top 500 Reviewer" for Amazon, I have also noticed a geometric increase in "Job-search" and career coaching books; some of the better ones I have reviewed (see my Amazon list of books for those "in-transition" and make sure you vote on those reviews you like). While most of these books echo the proven path to job search success - take time out, take stock, make a plan, develop your marketing tools, network, etc. - they usually have their unique character adding a unique twist and valuable advice not found elsewhere.

Georgian (Atlanta), West Pointer, successful recruiter, and now author, Skip Freeman, has given us a book, "Headhunter Hiring Secrets: The Rules of the Hiring Game Have Changed Forever!", that is no exception. He, too, has provided unique and valuable tips, or "secrets" not found elsewhere. Freeman begins his book with the statement that the rules of hiring have changed forever and throughout the book, makes the case that the hiring process is flawed. Those in search mode MUST become aware of how to play today's hiring "game" or suffer the consequences.

No longer is the hiring process one of inclusion but one of exclusion. "During each and every step of the hiring process, hiring managers and hiring companies are not trying to identify job applicants they can include in their `hiring pool,' but rather, they are trying to determine as quickly as possible how many applicants can be excluded from the `pool.'" Freeman likens it to athletic tryouts in which the coach wants to quickly get down to a number that is manageable.

"Headhunter Secrets" provides a feast of secrets that only someone like Freeman with his first-hand, in-the-trench experience, and powers of observation would bubble-up. His "TopTen New Rules" and their implications are presented first and then he delivers up his secrets as he takes us through the traditional four phases of effective job search:
1. Preliminary Planning and Preparation
2. Developing a marketing plan.
3. Selling
4. Closing the Deal

Throughout the book, Freeman provides ample examples of resume formats, direct mail letters, phone call scripts, use of LinkedIN, networking business cards, interview questions and formats, and much more.

His "secrets", not found elsewhere include:
* Misogi - how to prepare for the day ahead
* Proving you are not a "me-to" product
* Organizing for an effective search (see a new on-line organizer to help those in-transition unrelated to Freeman by going to [...] )
* Extensive use of role play to reveal secrets in interviewing, cold calling, and much more
* How to sell yourself - a numbers and skills game. 50 targeted connects per day = 6 face-to-face interviews = one offer.
* "Leading the Witness"
* The Seven Touch points in communicating.
* Shadows on the wall...saying those things that will be used to eliminate you..
* Different types of face-to-face interviews.
* And there is much more.

One key point that Freeman makes over and over again is that 50+% of those who interview have no idea how to do it effectively. "They may have been added to the agenda at the last minute, may have other things on their mind...so they do all the talking or ask irrelevant questions. They do not know how to interview you. They cannot provide good feedback to the team on why you should be hired. It is easier for them to provide a reason why you should not be hired so they look "smart" and appear to have effectively interviewed you." Freeman's "leading the witness" secret shows the reader how to turn this into a win rather than becoming what is usually a loss.

"Headhunter Hiring Secrets" will help all "in-transition" to understand the dynamics of today's job market enabling them to compete knowledgeably and effectively.

A Game Changer - The New Rules for Job Hunting
By David Perry
[[VIDEOID:mo16KIEAHPECF0P]]FACT: The job market is a viciously competitive and is being played with new rules. It's way more aggressive than any you've seen before and it's going to stay that way!

I have been in Executive Search since 1986 and have worked all over America. The last two years I witnessed the rules of the hiring game change forever. Let me explain what I mean.

How many job seekers are out there? About 80 million! You read the surveys from Monster, ExecuNet, Manpower, etc., and every survey states that 40% to 70% of "currently employed" workers (and there are about 140 million of them), are unhappy and ready to make a change. So, when the "perfect opportunity" comes along and you respond, you aren't just competing against the 15 million unemployed...you are competing against the other millions currently employed and looking. People who also want that job! That's an aggressive marketplace.

And to top it off, I'd say 90% of the openings are never posted so you have to be aggressive going after what you want - those companies with a future - with a laser like focus, and a great story.

I'm the author of Guerrilla Marketing for Job hunters 2.0 and the Wall Street Journal labeled me the "Rogue Recruiter" because of my unconventional tactics. Well unconventional is now the new NORMAL so step-up. I am an industry `insider" and I'm telling you Skip's book nailed it.

Skip tells you in hard-hitting, straight to the point language, how to position yourself to win this new game. I liken it to being a "war game" and in doing battle you must use Guerrilla Tactics. What Skip adds to your play book literally are secrets known by just a few of us: knowledge of what rules hiring companies are and are not playing by.

When companies play by different rules than the ones you're used to you...you lose.

As a "headhunter" who's completed more than 1000 assignments for ever position from entry level to CEO, I know what it takes in 2010 to get a candidate placed. Skip does too. This is not another "me too" book. It contains the relative unknown techniques we use as headhunters every day to place people, and Skip clearly tells you how to employ them for yourself.

There are many headhunters who don't want this book in the market place. They don't want you to know how to do this for yourself. I, for one, disagree - an educated consumer is the best kind because then I don't waste my time.

"Headhunter" Hiring Secrets is a must read. Ignore it at your career peril.

Before Even Looking For A Job Read This!
By TexDr
Although I am a frequent buyer of many products (especially books) from Amazon, I've never actually written a review until now. So why now? Well, for one, I thought this book was that good. I've been fortunate to be gainfully employed for over 15 years, so I haven't had to actually look for a job recently. Yes, I've kept my resume reasonably updated, and friends who reviewed my resume said it looked fine. Back when I last looked for a job was back in the early 90's, the wonderful dot.com years. In those days, you uploaded your resume to a job board, applied online to a few postings, and reviewed your options. The game has certainly changed.

Before buying this book I tried the same techniques I used 15 years ago (assuming those job boards were still in existence). The results; I got a fair amount of email for positions that are not even related to my specialty, I get job postings for positions that are half way across the country, and on the occasions I actually sent my resume to a job posting I've heard nothing back. On the occasional phone interviews I have done, they go absolutely no where. Even though I'm still employed, I was really beginning to become stressed. I know the job market is more competitive than ever before, but I didn't realize that the job market had changed so dramatically and that almost everything I had been doing up to this point has probably done nothing more than get my resume thrown in the "excluded" pile.

Let me share why I think Skip's book is that good.

1. Skip is direct and straightforward in his writing. His book is not about job theory, or repeating the same techniques that have worked for many job seekers for years and years. He tells you quite directly what recruiters and companies are looking for, and it may be surprising to you (it was to me), that initially it's not about how great your skill set is.

2. The book offers very practical, specific suggestions to get yourself in front of the person that is actually hiring. I've highlighted and dog-eared so many pages my week old book looks like I've had it for years. Let me give you a specific example of something that just astounded me. I've uploaded my resume to many job boards, saving the filename as my real name and the year. What Skip points out, rather directly, is how will your resume actually stand out against the hundreds (if not more) applicants if your resume just includes your name and the year? Give it a name that includes key words, skill sets, your degree. It sounds so simple, but it's nothing I've ever read in any job hunting or career search book. Why on earth would a company decide to even review my resume when it has a name like bob 2011.com (obviously they haven't).

3. The book contains many, many, specific suggestions, and links to specific sites that may actually help you in your job search. I'm a big computer geek, but I've never heard of some of these sites.

4. At 338 pages, the book may seem like it would take forever to read, but Skip's writing style is very quick, to the point, and as a result it's actually quite a quick read.

If a recommendation is the sign of something worthwhile, then take my last example. Before I even finished reading the book I sent a personal email to one of my colleagues.

----

The more I read this book (Headhunter Hiring Secrets by Skip Freeman) the more I like it. It seems like every page or two I am highlighting something that I didn't know before in terms of understanding today's job market.

As you and I have discussed, I haven't looked at the job market in over 14 years. It seems like the more I read in this book, the more I realize the mistakes I have done in my current investigation into the job market, or just stuff I flat out never even considered before (i.e., the naming of your resume if posted on a job board).

If you have an extra 25 bucks laying around, I would really recommend getting a copy. If nothing else, at least for me, this book helps me feel like I'm not flying blind in potentially looking for a new job, knowing where to look for a job, or even what to say.

I even got to that part about what to put for your salary requirements if you apply online. The answer? Don't. Although it didn't spell it out specifically, the book strongly suggests never applying online to a company's job posting as it will more often than not, just get your resume thrown in the excluded pile. Instead, what it suggests is find out the name of the hiring person, not just HR or something like that. It gives you all kinds of ways to find out who that person might be (legitimate, networking ways, not spying on them). Or, even just finding someone who works for the company and asking if you could send them your resume. Then if they feel you are qualified, they could pass it on. The potential benefit to them is they might get the referral fee or prize.

Granted, I'm only half way through the book, but I sure do like what I have read thus far. Here's what stands out for me

1. It's quick reading; no long drawn out paragraphs explaining a bunch of fluff
2. It gives you specific suggestions, sites, terms, etc
3. The writer is direct. It doesn't spend much time saying things like, take 3 sheets of paper and write down where you see yourself in 5, 10 years, then imagine doing....blah, blah, blah. This book just offers quick, specific, suggestions and guidance. I like and need that right now, to not feel so overwhelmed and confused. For me, any book that doesn't tell me to do 15 things, yet just the book is so well written and specific makes ME and to do on my own the do 15 related job search things that I never knew before, that's a good book! If I get a job offer after this knowledge I'm gaining, then it will be a GREAT book.

Hope this helps someone.
