About the Author

Hendrie Davis Weisinger, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist trained in clinical, counseling, school, and organizational psychology. He is also a Marriage, Family, and Child Counselor.

Dr. Weisinger is the originator of criticism training and is one of the halfdozen experts in the area of anger management. A management scientist, he lectures for the UCLA Executive Education and M.B.A. programs, and for other leading business schools throughout the country. His expertise is sought by numerous Fortune 500 companies (IBM, AT&T, ARCO, Control Data, TRW, Warner-Lambert, to name just a few), government agencies, mental-health professionals, hospitals, parent groups, professional educators, and professional organizations such as the Young Presidents' Organization.

Dr. Weisinger's first book (co-authored by Norman M. Lobsenz), Nobody's Perfect, was a New York Times hardcover best seller and is now a Warner paperback. His article for The Wall Street Journal, "So You're Afraid," was selected as one of the sixty best articles ever to appear in the Journal's "Manager's Column" and is reprinted in The Wall Street Manager's Column, published by Dow Jones. Dr. Weisinger is also a frequent guest on national television and radio shows.

An innovator in mental-health treatment, Dr. Weisinger maintains a clinical practice as a consultant to A Touch of Care, a residential treatment facility that is an alternative to hospitalization for emotionally disturbed people.

Dr. Weisinger and his wife, Lorie, live in Santa Monica, California. They have a daughter, Briana, and two dogs, Mazel and Shovi.

A little dated and a little cheesy

While I do have this book in my collection it is not typically the primary one I utilize when working with anger management. I find this book to have good information and the fact that it is in workbook format lends itself well to weekly therapy sessions. However, I do feel that there are many other books out there that do the same job much better. Finally the concept of a "work out" is a good idea but pretty cheesy. On the rare occasion I utilize this book with a client I almost always lead with a disclaimer of "I know it's corny but work with the information not the corny concept".

Great Resource!!

This book has helped me find different ways in order to deal with my anger issues from life. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who deals with anger, whether it be on a daily basis or every once in awhile. The book does not have to be read from front to back. Each chapter deals with something different.

About the Author
Paulo Bellinati is recognized as one of Brazil's top contemporary guitarists. He has recorded and performed with many important Brazilian musicians including the Pau Brasil group, Gal Costa, Leila Pinheiro, Chico Buarque, and Edu Lobo. In 1994 he won Brazil's equivalent of a Grammy, the "Premio Sharp," for arranging the selection on Gal Costa's CD O Sorriso do Gato de Alice. Paulo's recordings and printed music are published and distributed worldwide by Guitar Solo Publications of San Francisco. His arrangements and compositions have been recorded by many contemporary guitarists including John Williams, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Quaternaglia, Badi Assad, the Assad Duo, Cristina Azuma, the Strano Sisters, Shinichi Fukuda, Timothy Kain, Eduardo Isaac, Ricardo Cobo, and Carlos Barbosa-Lima.

Really nice but very hard

This book has the arrangements exactly as played on the video, however a couple of the nicer songs were left out due to copyright issues as the author explains, he says they may be available in the future. The arrangements are divine, but they are not easy by any means, even the slow songs, but they pack lots of beauty and introspection.

About the Author
Nancy Pfenning received her PhD in Mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University in 1985. Her 1998 book "Chances Are..." is a bestseller at Prufrock Press, which specializes in gifted education. Since 1987 she has been teaching at the University of Pittsburgh, where she is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Statistics, liaison for College in High School Statistics, and a member of the American Statistical Association. Each year since 2005, she has used a draft of her new book to teach statistics to hundreds of undergraduates with her unique, "big picture" approach, which makes both the concepts and the learning process memorable to students. She is also a great believer in real-world applications, data collected from students themselves, and hands-on experiments---all ways that she has found to connect with her students, and to connect them to the wealth of ideas that statistics has to offer. In her free time, Nancy and her husband like to get together with their three grown children, with cooking, hiking, and traveling at the top of their list of favorite shared activities.

Nancy Pfenning is literally the best professor I have ever had -- she is calm, patient, explains things very well, and just overall loves statistics and teaching it to students. She used this (her) book to teach her STATS 1000 class at UPitt and it was truly an enriching experience - 5/5 for sure.

The rise of Sartre as a public intellectual happened in the 1940s. He made the case for stronger links between intellectuals and the people. The context is the experience of the war.During the war we have the creation of a vacuum: we have a no. of intellectuals who are tainted because of their activities in the war; either because they’d written in support of Nazism, or because they hadn’t been explicit enough in their criticisms of Nazi Germany or Vichy. What’s distinctive about Sartre is that he was successful in a no. of different fields: journalist, philosopher, novelist, playwright. Sartre’s philosophy, in the way he articulated it around 1945 resonated with the French public. That is distinctive. At the time a no. of collaborationist intellectuals were being prosecuted, simply for what they had written, and some of the people like Robert Brazziac received the death sentence. During those trials the responsibility of the individual, in particular the intellectual, becomes prominent. Intellectual collaboration goes alongside economic collaboration. Intellectual collaboration is more important because you influence people,who can influence other people, who influence other people. So what Sartre does, he redefines his philosophy during that period, he makes it more digestible, simple, and he centres it around the responsibility of the intellectual. This becomes a moral category. It’s a prerequisite: you need to be able to speak out, need to intervene, and that’s where the notion of the engaged intellectual comes into play. But he cynically dumps the baggage he needs to get rid of, the German philosophers. Being and Nothingness of 1943 is an engagement with German philosophy. Heidegger was implicated in the Nazi regime. The famous lecture he gives, Socialism and Humanism(1945),he explains his philosophy in simple terms, while making minimum references to German philosophy. He presents a philosophy in tune with the times. He depicts the experience of the war in line with the way De Gaulle was presenting the war, which is very much a resistant socialist. The idea that Vichy was very much an act of collaboration of a small elite. That most French people, either or in practice, were at least in spirit, resistance fighters. During this period he writes a very important essay"What is a collaborator?" Collaboration and anti-Semitism is a product of people on the margins of French society, people not properly integrated, hankering for an external force, e.g. Nazi Germany, because they’re not really part of French society. He provides a vocabulary that makes sense of the trauma of the war in a way that is remarkably healing. He’s part of a broader tradition of the authoritative, public intellectual,people who have gone through all the right educational channels, steeped in a high profile discipline like philosophy, who speak about a wide range of subjects with some authority,without necessarily having expertise as such like Sartre. By the 1950s 1960s, with the institutionalisation of the social sciences, this kind of intellectual is no longer quite acceptable.People feel you need methodology, a sense of expertise, in order to be able to speak out about a no. of social and political issues today.

Sartre's existentialism owed a lot to the German philosophers of Hegel, Husserl and Heidegger, and it was Sartre's reaction to these that gave rise to his philosophy of existentialism as described in Being and Nothingness, which was an individualist philosophy of freedom. However as he moved into the 50s and 60s he no longer could apply this philosophy to politics, which he became articulate in, so he dropped the philosophy more and more and embraced Marxism,a more effective tool to diagnose society's ills and campaign on. He played down the German connection after the war, and tried to marry existentialism with Marxism and humanism, but it didn't work. Sartre was a bad philosopher, but was a good psychologist, pamphleteer and a radical in politics. He rose to become the leading public intellectual in France because of his leadership of the Resistance, and giving the French people anew image of themselves. To him only the marginal became collaborationists, the majority of the people in the centre were of the resistance. Camus has come out of that period with his reputation enhanced as being the anti-Marxist. He didn't tell lies to the workers to keep them happy like Sartre. This book seems like a good read. Of course Camus never claimed to be a philosopher or an existentialist. He wrote about the 'absurd'. He took the moral high ground of thought due to the truth to his origins: an Algerian Frenchman born outside of France, representing its best values. He was condemned by Sartre and Les Tempes Modernes for disliking the consequences of revolution, violence, bloodshed.

By 1945 Sartre felt the need to engage with the present, when philosophical considerations become secondary to his intellectual/political being. Then Sartre reinvents himself as a political activist. He associates with a no. of political events, tries to organise his own left wing party, becomes involved in the decolonisation movement, Algeria, Vietnam, the student movement, Maoism and so on. Philosophy is becoming less important to him: he makes an attempt to link his philosophy to Marxism. He gets involved in all these events, but his philosophy is not particularly useful for tackling these social/political issues like decolonisation. Marxism is more appropriate to analysing events than the individualistic tendencies of his existentialism. With the rise of the social sciences, structuralism becomes more important: its more compatible with other analyses like psychoanalysis, Marxism, social sciences; and so existentialism is on its own in a world in which the social sciences are much more prominent. Sartre is now a footnote in 20th century philosophy, but he became important in the mid-twentieth century of France as a public figure who utilised rhetoric to communicate. Meurleau-Ponty, though academic, will survive as a philosopher of importance.

For BPD, it's a saner, healthier way to walk on eggshells, but there's still eggshells

I got this for the BPD information. It does a great job of explaining the disorder. The perspective of why someone with BPD does the illogical and self-defeating things they do, even when it seems like they really don't want to do those things, has been extremely helpful and a nice sanity check. The advice to not take it personal and not let it affect your emotions, even though the BPD person may be blaming you, is very helpful and takes the pressure and guilt off. But ultimately, there seems to be no solution for actually helping a BPD person who won't get therapy. (Even you help with something you can help with, like helping someone move, there's a good chance it will backfire) That means difficult decisions still have to be made to protect yourself from the emotional abuse (even if unintentional) from the BPD person. If it's someone you've brought into your life (friend, partner, employee) do you dump them if they aren't getting therapy? If it's a parent, child, sibling, spouse - do you try to manage your interaction and personal responses, regardless, because they are a permanent part of your circle? Because you will still be walking on eggshells after reading and following the advice in the book. You'll just have some better responses and insight on how to protect yourself. The insight of the book will help you stop questioning reality while dealing with a BPD person who's re-writing your past interactions to justify their impulses.
I'm not having to deal with any narcissists currently, so can't really speak to the helpfulness of that advice.
4 stars only because I was naively hoping for a fix to the problem, based on the title. For BPD, it's a saner, healthier way to walk on eggshells, but there's still eggshells. I'd still recommend this book though.

Normal walking on eggshells understanding, a comprehensive understanding of borderline personality disorder

I came across this book in kind of a funny way. I don't know anyone that is dealing with borderline personality and neither am I dealing with the disorder. However, I watch a lot of those police procedural detective shows, and I have seen several lately in which the main villain is diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, or has some variation or something very similar. And my curiosity and interest in psychology and psychiatry inspired me to do a little research and find out just exactly why having this disorder actually means. I came across this book and decided to take a chance and downloaded. I mean after all. It's not like them spending $1 million, or anything, but I'm glad I did because this book provided some very interesting and intriguing information about borderline personality disorder this book very clearly explained the disorder, as well as explaining that just because someone has narcissistic tendencies. It is not necessarily mean that they have borderline personality disorder. Before I read this book, I had no idea that people with borderline personality disorder were actually as (or could be) as self-obsessed and dangerous with mood swings and anger issues as the individuals in the detective shows on television. The book also clearly explained the various therapeutic treatment methods that are used when dealing with the disorder, as well as the symptoms and potential causes, and even though this book is only 33 pages. I felt as though I learned a lot and my curiosity was completely satisfied. So much so that the book inspired me to possibly write my next psychology paper on borderline personality disorder. *The* book on factor models

Should you buy this book if you already have Grinold and Kahn? Yes, if you are interested in factor models of equity returns: about 200 pages of CK are devoted to them, compared to a few in GK. If you are not, I would still recommend the purchase, but expect CK's stay on your bookshelf to be brief - enough time to read through, and spot things not found in GK, such as discussion of leverage and tax management. Finally, if you do not have Grinold and Kahn, read this book as as a warm-up, but do graduate to the GK tome. Alas, this, too, is a book for MBAs: it does not reflect state-of-the-art, and shies away from math or statistics.

A practical entry-level quant equity portfolio management book

This is a very practical entry-level quant equity portfolio management book (more practical and easier than Grinold & Kahn's book). It's a good place to start if you are interested in building quant models to manage equity portfolios. The book started from the beginning (e.g., how to pick factors), to how to build models to forecast returns, risk, and how to run optimization. This book didn't get into enough details about econometrics, database management, optimization, and programming, which are all essential to build a robust quant model. The authors mentioned pooled time-series cross-sectional econometric models, but didn't go beyond the surface. Overall, it's a good introduction book, but could be better.

A very readable primer on quantiative equity portfolio management

In my opinion, this book should be on the bookshelf of every quantitative equity portfolio manager right next to his Grinold & Kahn. In addition to the basics, it covers a lot of the more practical aspects of quantitative euqity portfolio management compared to the Grinold & Kahn, but is not lacking any academic rigour. It is very readable and accessible for anyone with a professional finance background or interest.

Couldn't put it down, not happy with one part of the ending

I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more by this author. I don't want to give anything away but wanted to clarify a couple of things others have commented on. First, the story is told from the main character, Olivia's, point of view and is written as if she is talking to the other main character. So when she writes the word "you" that means she is speaking to the other main character. When Olivia is speaking to the other characters it is easily identified. Secondly, the character of Olivia is also a mom and in my opinion makes some huge errors and makes choices I would never make but that doesn't mean this is a terrible book. I think that this lack of good parenting adds to the story because if she had thought about her child more than there wouldn't be a story. In order for the events to occur she has to make these (bad) choices. My reason for the four star rating is I felt the ending could have been slightly different and still made an impact on the reader. Additionally, a bit more detail was needed with regards to what happened to the siblings. All in all it was highly suspenseful and extremely entertaining.

Post was edited to remove the exact reason why I was unhappy with the ending, per the author's request. I look forward to your next novel.

Really Awful

This book is a hot mess.
It has unlikable, undeveloped characters, a predictable plot, and clumsy, filler type writing.

Here is the basic story:
1.Two unlikable characters have "boring to read about" sexcapades. indoors, outdoors, public, private, etc.
2. When they are not engaged in sexcapades they are eating English breakfasts, Indian food, Chinese food, fish and chips, etc.
3. One of the two unlikable characters has her text messaging hacked by third unlikable character. ( I think this is supposed to be the suspenseful part)
4. None of this turns out well, and no one really cares.

Gripping, well written, thought provoking novel

Ah the proper use of the English language to capture our minds and wrap us in a web of questions about the characters. One can picture the events and scenes as they unfold. The suspense kept me reading and I couldn't put it down until I knew the ending.

Readers put off by the raunchy sexual appetites and morals of some contemporary romance protagonists will enjoy this story of a lonely young widow who slowly gets under the skin of a misogynist mercenary until he discovers that love is the best thing that ever happened to him. More feminist readers, however, may find Macomber's hero, Cain Maclellan, rather irksome, as he appears to value lovely Linette Collins chiefly for her "softness" and gentleness. Cain's job involves rescuing various victims of Third World terrorists; and Linette, who lost her first husband to cancer, worries about her growing attraction to Cain because of his dangerous career. She does not, however, appear unduly troubled by the fact that he himself often kills others in order to achieve his objectives. Macomber (The Trouble with Angels) here throws together the traditional "family values" of Linette and her family and the rugged machismo of Cain and his co-workers into what ultimately seems like an uneasy mix, but her portrayal of a relationship that develops slowly and steadily despite a host of obstacles nevertheless can be convincing.

This book was thrilling to read! Not only does Debbie Macomber paint lovely love stories in this series (Deliverance Company), but she also describes the life and missions of mercenaries so well that you believe you are there watching the action!! A great book and series!

Great book, couldn't stop reading it

Great book, couldn't stop reading it. Now on Book 2 and have Book 3 waiting in my Library.
Would have been 5 stars but I don't care for more explicit sex scenes.
