The book explains the obvious, that people over eat as a result of conditioning due to negative experiences. It does not explain how to overcome this but let's you know you can buy their counseling services....that's it.

Beware! Requires facilitator

I am fan of Morty Lefkoe programs, although this book demands to work with a facilitator to break the patterns using the Lefkoe Method for eliminating beliefs.
The booklet gives a possible and common minimal set of beliefs that might lead to emotional overeating, but no solutions are covered inside the material.
Besides intelectual comprehension I didn't get something else from the book.

Information that requires several counseling sessions

This short ebook describes the author's theories about how conditioning causes us to overeat when we want some kind of reward or pleasurable experience and wrongly believe that eating something, even when not hungry, is the way to get it. The principles seem sound, but the author himself says in the ebook that it takes several sessions of counselling for someone to accomplish this, and so this book is really just an advertisement for the author's counselling service. It is very unlikely that you will be able to stop overeating just by reading this book, and the author makes no such claim in the book itself.

So if you want to read an interesting theory about why you overeat, this is for you. If you want to stop overeating, this book won't be very helpful by itself.

Complete coverage of the analysis and design of synchronous sequential systems adds to the comprehensive nature of the text. The derivation of state tables from word problems further emphasizes the practical implementation of the material being presented.

About the Author
Marcovitz is Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Florida Atlantic University. He received Bachelors and Masters degrees in electrical engineering from M.I.T., and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He taught at the University of Maryland and then went on to found the Department of Electrical Engineering at Florida Atlantic University in 1970.

Heck no!

I think the negative reviews have summed it up pretty good. This book is not clear about anything. They go into great confusing detail just to explain the simplest concepts. Theres not (if any) good step by step guides on how to do the problems in the book. They explain concepts and problems in paragraph format which is dumb. I actually just transfered to a tech school because the texts the University was using were just plain awful. Before buying your books, check out the reviews on here. I have found that most are pretty accurate.

Poorly organized and written; not recommended

I'll echo the poor reviews of this book by others. This is a terrible textbook. It was required reading for a course I took in digital electronics.

The Table of Contents is well organized, but concepts within each chapter are disorganized and poorly explained. Rather than explaining key concepts in an organized fashion and then providing examples that show how to apply the concepts, this book immediately delves into detailed examples and buries the explanation of key concepts in the examples. Even then, the concepts are often so poorly explained that I had to use other resources to understand what the author was trying to convey. Although I continued to read the book as assigned by the professor, I often found that much of the reading was a waste of my time, and I relied heavily on other resources (lecture, Google, etc.) to actually learn the course material.

Better as kindling

This is by far the worst text book I have ever purchased. The organization seems purposefully confusing. Homework problems often send you on "wild goose chases" to find figures and examples required to answer the questions. "CEs" (continuing examples) are used throughout the book that force you to constantly jump around to understand what the author is trying to convey. It feels like they really tried to cut costs emphasizing a structure friendlier to ink savings rather than understanding. Here's an example: A homework problem might ask you to use the same method used in a continuing example, while referencing a diagram within a figure to answer a question. Before you can even begin, you have to find the continuing example on one page, find the diagram on another, then keep the places with your fingers and turn back and forth while trying to understand what is being asked. I'm also not a fan of the flow of the book. It feels like the author said to himself, "How can I write this book to make me sound really smart". Instead of "How can I ensure the reader will follow my explanation". Finally, and perhaps most irritating is the choice of colors in the book. Most of the text in the body is fine however, figures and diagrams are light red, red, burgundy and burnt sienna! The text will say something like; "...as can clearly be seen by the red lines..." and I want to scream, "they're all red!!!" If you're considering this book it is likely because you will be compelled to buy it for a class. If you have any say in the matter, say "no thanks".

The honest truth on a difficult issue.

A few of the reviews for this book are very negative and very biased. As a counselor looking for the truth to share with those who would like "a way out" of the homosexual lifestyle, this is a very helpful book. If you don't want to know God's views on the issue and you feel that homosexuality is an OK option, don't read this book. If you feel like there must be something more to life than living the homosexual lifestyle and you want to experience God's love and acceptance, this is the book for you.

Not quite as good as others in series, Maybe Not great for kids scared of the dark

This is book 7 in the Magical Animal Friends series, modeled after the popular Rainbow Fairies books (same formula, two girls encounter a magic being that introduces them to a very "fluffy" version of a magical battle between good and bad). This book is my 9 yo daughter's LEAST favorite so far of the first 8. My 7 yo enjoys reading these series as well, but she has not read this one yet. My 9 yo reads at an 8th grade level and reads these books in ~20 mins, my 7 yo reads more at 3rd grade level and usually reads them over the course of two evenings at bedtime.
Parent Rundown:
+ It is not necessary to read the books in order to enjoy this one, so if you have a young girl who likes foxes, she can enjoy this story.
+ This is a beginning chapter book designed for budding readers, but can be enjoyed by girls through mid-elementary grades.
+ No potty humor.
+ This book actually teaches a little bit about foxes / nocturnal animals, which is more than some of the other books have from an educational stand point!
+ Books contain magic and fantasy as well as an evil witch, Grizelda. My 9yo comments that Grizelda never really does anything which eventually makes for anticlimactic reading.
+ Plot summary: The Fuzzybrush Fox family sees something strange in the sky in Friendship Forest just as the sun sets. This book features the third dragon sent by Grizelda the Witch since the introduction of the dragons in book 5. Smudge the dragon blocks the starlight from the sky, causing the leaves to fall from the Friendship Tree, which would prevent our two heroines from visiting Friendship Forest anymore.
+ No animals are actually injured, but the Fuzzybrush Fox Family is turned to shadows. Grizelda makes a brief appearance. The plot is resolved when the two heroines along with Ruby fox perform a dance and get Smudge to join in and reverse his naughty doings. It's a little ludicrous, but Smudge ends up as a friend.
+ This book ends with a cliffhanger for the finale in Book 8. So though your child doesn't have to read book 5 or 6, they will probably want to read book 8 pretty badly.
+ If your child is afraid of the dark, your child may not like this book as much. There's a lot of tripping around in the dark / animals being turned to shadows before the silly resolution.
+ Neat page or two of picture puzzles in the back.
+ Expect the content to be a tad vapid, as the Rainbow Fairies certainly were, but these books encourage children to read more when they need a mental break from school work.

"Monster" is what the prosecutor called 16-year-old Steve Harmon for his supposed role in the fatal shooting of a convenience-store owner. But was Steve really the lookout who gave the "all clear" to the murderer, or was he just in the wrong place at the wrong time? In this innovative novel by Walter Dean Myers, the reader becomes both juror and witness during the trial of Steve's life. To calm his nerves as he sits in the courtroom, aspiring filmmaker Steve chronicles the proceedings in movie script format. Interspersed throughout his screenplay are journal writings that provide insight into Steve's life before the murder and his feelings about being held in prison during the trial. "They take away your shoelaces and your belt so you can't kill yourself no matter how bad it is. I guess making you live is part of the punishment."

Myers, known for the inner-city classic Motown and Didi (first published in 1984), proves with Monster that he has kept up with both the struggles and the lingo of today's teens. Steve is an adolescent caught up in the violent circumstances of an adult world--a situation most teens can relate to on some level. Grade 7 Up-Steve Harmon, 16, is accused of serving as a lookout for a robbery of a Harlem drugstore. The owner was shot and killed, and now Steve is in prison awaiting trial for murder. From there, he tells about his case and his incarceration. Many elements of this story are familiar, but Myers keeps it fresh and alive by telling it from an unusual perspective. Steve, an amateur filmmaker, recounts his experiences in the form of a movie screenplay. His striking scene-by-scene narrative of how his life has dramatically changed is riveting. Interspersed within the script are diary entries in which the teen vividly describes the nightmarish conditions of his confinement. Myers expertly presents the many facets of his protagonist's character and readers will find themselves feeling both sympathy and repugnance for him. Steve searches deep within his soul to prove to himself that he is not the "monster" the prosecutor presented him as to the jury. Ultimately, he reconnects with his humanity and regains a moral awareness that he had lost. Christopher Myers's superfluous black-and-white drawings are less successful. Their grainy, unfocused look complements the cinematic quality of the text, but they do little to enhance the story. Monster will challenge readers with difficult questions, to which there are no definitive answers. In some respects, the novel is reminiscent of Virginia Walter's Making Up Megaboy (DK Ink, 1998), another book enriched by its ambiguity. Like it, Monster lends itself well to classroom or group discussion. It's an emotionally charged story that readers will find compelling and disturbing.

Myers combines an innovative format, complex moral issues, and an intriguingly sympathetic but flawed protagonist in this cautionary tale of a 16-year-old on trial for felony murder. Steve Harmon is accused of acting as lookout for a robbery that left a victim dead; if convicted, Steve could serve 25 years to life. Although it is clear that Steve did participate in the robbery, his level of involvement is questionable, leaving protagonist and reader to grapple with the question of his guilt. An amateur filmmaker, Steve tells his story in a combination of film script and journal. The "handwritten" font of the journal entries effectively uses boldface and different sizes of type to emphasize particular passages. The film script contains minimal jargon, explaining camera angles (CU, POV, etc.) when each term first appears. Myers' son Christopher provides the black-and-white photos, often cropped and digitally altered, that complement the text. Script and journal together create a fascinating portrait of a terrified young man wrestling with his conscience. The tense drama of the courtroom scenes will enthrall readers, but it is the thorny moral questions raised in Steve's journal that will endure in readers' memories. Although descriptions of the robbery and prison life are realistic and not overly graphic, the subject matter is more appropriate for high-school-age than younger readers. Debbie Carton

An important story

Sixteen-year-old Steve is on trial for felony murder following a robbery and shooting. He's accused of being the look out guy, which can carry a life sentence. He imagines his trial like a film script, as he nervously stands trial.

Walter Dean Myers used Steve's script as part of the story, which allows Steve to see himself as an observer as well as what he knows is true. Readers don't know if the allegations are true or false, although his white lawyer seems to think he's guilty. Steve isn't like the three others involved in the robbery/murder. He's thoughtful and creative with dreams beyond his Harlem neighborhood. He does seem to lack insight, if he's guilty of being the lookout.

Myers superbly gives readers messages, with subtlety. Where lesser writers tell, he shows through nuance. He makes me think and feel. In one of the most poignant lines in MONSTER, Steven muses that his younger brother can't visit him in the adult prison, and if he was not an inmate, he too would be unable to visit. That one sentence spoke volumes to me about the juvenile justice system and made my heart ache. Another strong moment was Steve's lawyer's reaction to the verdict.

MONSTER is an important story not just about justice, but also about race and judging young black men on stereotypes rather than as individuals.

A Contemporary Classic.

Monster is the story of 16 year old Steve Harmon. A Harlem teen who finds himself on trial for felony murder due to his alleged participation in a botched robbery of a local pharmacy. Monster is so titled because during his trial, that is what the prosecutor refers to him as while addressing the jury in her opening arguments. This label haunts him and makes him question his identity and his place in society. Monster deals with some very profound issues regarding racism and the structure of our justice system. It also tackles the line between the legal definition of “innocence” and the moral/true definition of it.

For me, the appeal of this book lies with how the question of Steve’s innocence or guilt is intentionally ambiguous. Like the jurors, the reader has to weigh the evidence and decide whether Steve is innocent or guilty and if he is guilty, of what exactly? (The book does not go into as much detail about this, but it is set in NYC in the 90’s when Rudy Giuliani was the mayor known for being tough on crime. “Acting in Concert” clauses in the penal code meant that you didn’t necessarily have to be the one who pulled the trigger to be charged with murder.)

The book has a very unique and interesting writing style. The story is told from Steve’s point of view but the narration switches back and forth between a screenplay format and diary entries. It also switches between the courtroom, jail and flashbacks to Steve's childhood. The screenplay format can be distracting at first and takes some getting used to, but it actually is quite effective in conveying imagery and as his trial ensues, it adds to the the drama. Some parts of his trial are riveting and read like an episode of Law and Order and his diary entries from jail are very sobering. The awards and accolades that this book has received are well-deserved. This is not your typical "overrated/overhyped" urban fiction novel.

Even though the book was written over ten years ago, this episode is being playing over and over again every day in America. Bernice Kentner is the best.

There are lots of color the theories out there. She has done the research. Her sub-categories make the most sense. I have shifted my wardrobe and make-up. I have just finished painting my rooms in my colors. I finally feel like myself. I love my surroundings now. This book will help you figure out your colors, especially if you are a blended season.

The 200 chapters are gathering and sorting the accumulated intelligence of the discipline according to the new conceptual framework adopted, in order to catalyze and elaborate the new formulations and insights that are then encapsulated in the theses. However, while the theoretical work in the text of the chapters relies on the rigorous build up of a new theoretical language, the theses are written in ordinary language ? with the theoretical concepts placed in brackets. The full list of the 50 theses affords a convenient summary printed as appendix at the end of the book.

By presenting architecture as a discipline with its own unique logic, The Autopoiesis of Architecture provides a wholly new theoretical approach to architecture. The impact of this is far reaching. Architecture's conception of itself is addressed but also that of its development within wider contemporary society. Schumacher's innovative treatment of the subject enriches architectural theory with a coordinated arsenal of concepts that facilitates both detailed analysis and insightful comparisons with other domains, such as art, science and politics. The ‘Autopoiesis' of the title refers to self-production: the term having first been introduced in biology to describe the essential characteristic of life as a circular organization that reproduces all its specific components out of its own life process. Once transposed into the theory of social systems, autopoiesis came to be understood as a system of communication capable of producing all its specific communication structures within their own internal process. It is this autopoietic system of communication that is being applied here to an architectural context. Architecture comprises various modes of communication, including drawings, texts and built works. These communications depend upon each other and combine to reproduce architecture as a specialized system of communication. The book explores how this system of communication forms a unique subsystem of society that co-evolves with other important autopoietic subsystems like art, science, politics and the economy.

The first of two volumes that together present a comprehensive account of architecture's autopoiesis, The Autopoiesis of Architecture: A New Framework for Architecture introduces the theoretical framework and traces the historical process of architecture's differentiation within its societal environment: its elevation above the craft of building, its emancipation from religion and politics, as well as its separation from art and science. Architecture's theory dependency is emphasized and its internal separation into the avant-garde and the mainstream is explained. About the Author
Patrik Schumacher is partner at Zaha Hadid Architects and founding director of the Design Research Laboratory (DRL) at the Architectural Association (AA) in London. He studied philosophy and architecture in Bonn, London and Stuttgart, where he received his architectural Diploma in 1990. In 1996 he founded the AADRL with Brett Steele, and continues to serve as one of its directors. In 1999 he completed his PhD at the Institute for Cultural Science, Klagenfurt University. Patrik Schumacher joined Zaha Hadid in 1988. Since then Zaha Hadid Architects has expanded from a small studio to a global firm employing over 300 architects. Patrik Schumacher's career continues to integrate practice and theory. His contribution to the discourse of contemporary architecture is also evident in his prior writings, such as Digital Hadid, 2004, as well as in his curatorial work for exhibitions, such as Latent Utopias, Graz, 2002. Part of the problem, not of the solution

Only waterboarding is more fun. In what is a torturous read and towering monument to reductionist, old-paradigm thinking, Schumacher attempts to construct a monumental theory of architecture by throwing everything but the kitchen sink into this book and dishing it out in a clankingly stiff, 19th-century germanic art historian's tone. But there is nothing new in Schumacher's "new" agenda. With its old-fashioned brand of technology-and-method-worship (now called "parametricism") and its call for an international hegemony of a single architectural style (huh?) this garbled and confused "theory" recalls the worst of the bad old days of positivist discourse. (Of course I give Schumacher the benefit of the doubt here in assuming that he was indeed seriously attempting to construct a theory and not just to construct another smoke-and-mirrors "theoretical" plumage as an academic appendage to another starchitect's shoot-from-the-hip signature brand architecture.) What architecture needs today is more wisdom and less pseudo-intellectual posing like this.

The Autopoiesis of Architecture is a spectacular intellectual achievement, and a very rare elaboration of a systematic, comprehensive, and unified theory for contemporary architecture. The writing is remarkably clear and accessible, while at the same time elegantly complex and distinctly articulate. This is a highly instrumental work that is immediately actionable for architects and designers in both analytical and generative contexts, cohering, connecting and ordering a huge network of complex discursive, professional and academic threads. It leaves no stone unturned, and is equally inspiring for seasoned professionals as it is for emerging practitioners and young students. The first volume is a comprehensive discourse analysis that constructs a rigorous, systematic framework for productive discursive differentiation, debate and evolution. The second volume systematically elaborates a comprehensive new agenda for architecture, culminating in a lucid reflection/projection on Parametricism, the contemporary style of architecture that emerged globally and evolved exponentially since the mid-1990s, across professional practices, design research collaboratives and schools worldwide, in response to the emergence of a global, functionally differentiated post-Fordist network society in the crisis and eventual collapse of Modernism in the late 1970s. Perhaps the most radical aspect of this treatise is its stark contrast to the exponential proliferation of fragmentary, multivalent, transdisciplinary and partial theories reverberating throughout the communications of architecture. The dearth of systematic and comprehensive contemporary architecture discourse addressing the principles, values and heuristics that inform design innovation today has surrounded the release of this treatise in a flurry of debate, and catalyzed a high level of engaged and polarized public architecture discourse. After two decades of disruptive innovations that have continuously converged on the territory of architecture discourse, practice, academia from cultural, cybernetic, economic, scientific, and political directions, this cohering and unifying architecture treatise is long overdue!
