Starred review. Twelve-year-old Alvin is something of an oddity to his neighbors in the small mid-western town in which he lives. A dedicated inventor, Alvin has a way of making things work, sometimes to the menace of people and property. His eight-year-old sister, 'the Pest', adores him, and together they set out to employ some of Alvin's inventions while trying to uncover a crime and the criminals. The victim, a kindly old woman, is immensely grateful to Alvin's mechanical ability when she is saved from a plot instigated by a ne'er do-well nephew, by one of Alvin's most intricate devices. There is no doubt that he has cut the corners of well-defined child deportment, but with his characteristic good will and intelligence, he emerges a town hero. A funny book which contains the elements of a mystery, picaresque adventure, and science fiction. --Kirkus, March 1960

OUTSTANDING!

This is the first title in an outstanding series of Alvin books by Clifford Hicks. Sadly, they all seem to be out of print.
The Alvin books were my favorites as a kid. I checked them out from the library repeatedly and devoured them. As a 10 year old, I wanted to hang out with Alvin and Shoey. The books are full of laughs, adventure, and great storytelling. They take us back to small town America, before kids had to deal with grownup problems.
If you have a kid, buy this book for him. Buy it used, buy it on Ebay, buy it at a used bookstore! The other titles (all very good) in the series are ALVIN'S SECRET CODE, ALVIN'S SWAP SHOP, ALVIN FERNALD FOREIGN TRADER, ALVIN FERNALD MAYOR FOR A DAY, and ALVIN FERNALD SUPERWEASEL. All are great. Another great series if you like the Alvin books is the Mad Scientists Club books by Bertrand Brinley. Check them out.

The Marvelous Inventions of Arnold Fernald

I am 45 years old... my 44 year old brother came over and talked about how this book changed his life. He read it as a kid and became an inventor of sorts himself... a perpetual tinkerer. He wasn't sure of the name and I found it for him and ordered him a copy as well as my 9 year old son. It took some insistance to get by boy, Nick, to read it. He couldn't put it down and when my brother came over to visit he quized Nick on select parts of the book. They both smiled and laughed. Having read it myself I can tell you it is a most wonderful book. Buy it! Your kid will remember it always.

Alvin Fernald in "The Marvelous Inventions of Alvin Fernald" gives us the character we've been wanting to see for a long time. No pretentious, Einstein-like, nauseating child characters as are so often found in children's books today. The words "believable" and "energized" fit this character and this book. Alvin is entertaining, hilarious and inventive. This book is REFRESHING. Kids are free from dealing with divorce, AIDS, broken promises, puberties-gone-bad and all the other bibliotherapy themes that seem to permeate the current books for children. Not that those aren't important, but this one is a time-out from seriousness, and is a roller coaster ride, a non-stop comedy routine, and a mystery which actually develops in a BELIEVABLE manner. It is such REFRESHING FUN. The story line is so adeptly crafted by its author, Clifford B. Hicks, a talented writer of much expertise and experience. Books like this separate the usual books that have plagued the children's market for the last several years by formula hack writers from those written by truly talented children's writers, like Clifford B. Hicks. It's such a relief to read something so enjoyable and so NOT-FORMULA. Single this book out for your children and leave the over-used theme, big yawn books to others less discriminating. This book is SPECIAL. Give YOUR kid's their childhood's back with "The Marvelous Inventions of Alvin Fernald."

Wish: Faerieground is the first book on a series of four about Soli and Lucy. I enjoyed it.

Lucy is light, while Soli is dark. They are thirteen, best friends and complete opposites. They have played in the woods all their lives; it's their secret shortcut, even though Lucy's mom has warned them to not go there. One day, Soli makes a wish that has rather big repercussions.

Beautiful art!
This is the start of their adventure, as they encounter very different fates while in Faerieground. These faeries are not the Tinker Bell type, they are quite scary and mean. Especially Queen Calandra, she is awful.

At the end, Lucy and Soli turned out to be good friends and look out for each other, trying hard to do everything possible to overcome the mess they got themselves into. Kheelan is also a faery, but he seems to be a good one and he took an instant liking to Soli. Since the book is not lengthy, the characters were a little hard to get to know, mainly because we are told about them and their relationship, instead of shown, for instance by the use of flashback or dialogue.

Faerieground is really easy to read and it's short. In fact, I found it too short, but I understand that more is to come in the series. The story is told from alternating points of view, in the first person from Lucy and Soli's perspective. The plot is simple and a bit predictable, but I'm eager to see what happens next. One of the best things about the book is the amazingly beautiful illustrations. Overall, Wish: Faerieground is a short, entertaining read.

Bad Publishing - Buy Another Version

This book is a poorly published example of The Republic. There are no chapter or section markers and there is no attribution to the translator. Upon receiving this book (and being severely dissatisfied), I promptly ordered The Republic of Plato: Second Edition by Allan Bloom and have been very happy. Being that this book and another share the same ratings (including the same comments), I count this as false advertising.

Kindle Edition, Up to snuff.

This review is dedicated exclusively to the work published on Kindle. This is not the least expensive Kindle edition,and it is not the most expensive. It is almost exactly halfway between the two. And, unless you have a special reason for wanting the Allen Bloom translation, I suggest you get this one, for half the cost. The active Table of Contents is just as good as you need it to be, and the material added by the editor / translator is good, without being noisome. You came, after all, to read Plato, not someone else's opinion of Plato.

The top of the list for requirements with this kind of work is that all the identifying numbers and letters identifying where you are in the work are present, and searchable. This is huge. There are probably a dozen or so editions from a half dozen major translators, and the only way to find your way around is through these line numbers, which all good scholarly citations should include. I just did a quick look at the preview of Allan Bloom's edition, and these numbers are missing from the Kindle. If you want Bloom's translation, get it on paper (which does have the line numbering) and get this one for searching.

I will mention that this also has the virtue of not being the 19th century translation of Benjamin Jowett. You will not be mislead by Jowett, but there have been several newer translations which have improved on his work. This one by G. M. A. Grube may be one of the best, but even if it is not, there is always virtue in having more than one translation. My hand copy translation is by Paul Shorey, in the Loeb Classics edition, with the Greek. So I like having the alternative available.

A Wealth of Wisdom

In our contemporary age, most of what of the Platonic texts, especially "The Republic," state should be done in order to obtain perfection in society is extremely controversial.

However, Plato remains a genius; for every controversial statement, he makes a logical argument which the reader has no choice but to accept, not agree on, but accept, for his logos is always on solid foundation.

And with it, he ventures forth and creates his perfect society all to prove one statement: that men who abide by and submit to justice and virtue live fuller and more joyful lives than those that use injustice to get ahead in life.

The importance of Plato's Republic would be understated; this is one of the most influential and arguably one of the most beautiful tomes of human history and over two millenia of conservation has proven so.

To live and not read the Republic, or not indulge yourself in the philosophy left by such genius men, would be a tremendous waste in the potential of opening your mind. And this version, with its translation and little cute bookmark, does a splendid job.
