Vincent Bumgarner has been designing software for over 20 years, working with many languages on nearly as many platforms. He started using Splunk in 2007 and has enjoyed watching the product evolve over the years. James D. Miller is an IBM-certified, accomplished senior engagement leader and application / system architect / developer / integrator with over 35 years of extensive application and system design and development experience. He has held positions such as National FPM practice leader, certified solutions expert, technical leader, technical instructor, and best practice evangelist. His experience includes business intelligence, predictive analytics, web architecture and design, business process analysis, GUI design and testing, data and database modeling and systems analysis, design, and development of applications, systems and models based on cloud, client/server, web and mainframe. His responsibilities have included all aspects of solution design and development, including business process analysis and reengineering, requirement documentation, estimating and planning/management of projects, architectural evaluation and optimization, test preparation, and the management of resources. Other experience includes the development of ETL infrastructures―such as data transfer automation between mainframe (DB2, Lawson, Great Plains, and so on) systems and the client/server model-based SQL server―web-based applications, and the integration of enterprise applications and data sources. In addition, he has acted as an Internet application development manager and was responsible for the design, development, QA, and delivery of multiple websites, including online trading applications, warehouse process control and scheduling systems, and administrative and control applications. Mr. Miller was also responsible for the design, development, and administration of a web-based financial reporting system for a $450-million organization, reporting directly to the CFO and his executive team. In various other leadership roles, such as project and team leader, lead developer, and applications development director, Mr. Miller has managed and directed multiple resources using a variety of technologies and platforms. First and foremost let me say I enjoyed the first book and was very excited to purchase this book on the
expectations that this would surpass it. I was not disappointed the book delves into the extensive concepts of
Big Data and intelligence gathering concepts used in the real world, that said I have one extensive criticism and that
would be the instructions given on setting up the tutorial data. The Event generator is not really windows friendly and instructions
are not quite clear on setting it up... the instructions given do not work within windows as given and I suppose were only tested in a Linux
environment. It would help immensely if the Writers could address this issue with a solution for windows installs concerning the event generator propagated by Splunk making sure step by step instructions are given to make the data work with Splunk. Much easier to work with examples in book.

Great getting started guide for Splunk

This massive volume (clocking in at over 450 pages!) is easily one of the better IT books I've read in the past few years. Although its called Implementing Splunk it DOES NOT cover installing the software. Check the documentation for that. What it does cover is getting started with using the software, and working towards more in-depth scenarios and configurations so you can handle a wider variety of data, with better dashboards and visualizations. I think one of the best parts of this book is the number of screenshots with clearly marked emphasis on the areas that the author is referring to in the text. That in itself makes following the text much easier, since you aren't hunting around trying to find the setting, menu or piece of information, but you can immediately see it. Need touch!

Smoked the Net+ Exam using this and other materials

I've read Todd Lammle's books, followed some of his podcasts, blogs, twitter, the normal stalker stuff etc. and find this guy the most engaging networking professional around. His CCNA book is absolutely fantastic from the few chapters I have read so far(this will be step eventually for me after this cert perhaps for which I will pursue deeper into soon). This book is also in that category of awesomeness. I read all the material in this book along with doing the exercises and pillaging the CD along with it. The virtual lab is sooooo freaking awesome for doing networking diagnostics (which I use in my new real-world job).

I nearly topped out taking this Network+ exam with 860/900...something like that. I knew the questions I missed when it was all over with. Time left on test was like 1 hour lol.

Other stuff I used was test banks on the internet and researching questions I missed, Network+ by Cengage (an older edition), and some various network troubleshooting books I have ran across in my time studying for this test. Hope my review helps!

Passed my test on the first try, but this book has some issues

I bought this book to pass my Network+ test and I did, but the book seems like the writer got bored. Many of the written labs had many wrong answers and if it wasn't for knowing better I would've believed it all the way through. By chapter 18 you could tell the writer got bored with the content because chapters 18-20 became very broken. If you didn't know any better you would've taken what he said for face value.

Overall a good book and I did pass the test on the first pass, but would expect the writer to take his writing more serious and get it peer reviewed before publishing it. Multiple errors and if you just fed your brain with it's content without questioning it, you would probably take it as gospel. Personally I would expect more from a certified expert. If you can pick out the errors and update the errata, your fine, but you have to know when he is wrong vs. right.

An update is highly required on the book overall and the simlets side of the context, this book doesn't even mention those type of questions but luckily I had a CCNA book on hand to discuss subnetting because this book makes subnetting extremely difficult to comprehend.

The writer likes to ramble on and probably could have shaved off atleast 150 pages via just cutting to the chase. Yes I passed the test on the first try, but I had to utilize other resources to get to the content I needed. If you hadn't taken a test like this in the past, this book would be seriously lacking in what is truly needed to pass the test, but on the flip side, you do learn what you need to understand many of the test concepts. I'm very neutral on this book.

I haven't finished reading it yet but so far its a good book. For the "end of chapter" review questions the are multiple choice and short answer. I really like the short answer questions because it makes you think versus seeing the answer in a multiple choice format.

Should be required reading

Religion permeates all society and all cultures. Though for those who know a thing or two about it know that a religion in one society at one time is not the same as a religion in another society at another time. Steven Brutus breaks through this issue by trying to study religion as a whole in a construct of religion/culture/history. Brutus shows tremendous skill at his craft of philosophy and puts it to good use trying to get at this construct in order for as full an understanding as he can get. He does this in a few number of pages (only about 170), but it's amazing what he does in those pages, which are so dense with information that it warrants numerous reads. He also shows an incredible breadth of knowledge on these traditions and their histories. Not extensive by any means, but enough to give you an idea of just how certain faith traditions and religions have existed over the years.

It is self-published, so references and a term index are lacking, however, the book does come with notes, an index of all thinkers mentioned, as well as a brief run down of the six religions looked at (Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) noting their major thinkers and their major sources.

Daniel Dennett believes that a curriculum of religion is greatly needed in schools so that children (of all ages) should be well acquainted with the various religions that exist in the world, this book would be perfect for such a study, which is why I believe it should be required reading. Such a system is not currently in place, so in the meantime you should read it and then pass it on.

My only qualms were with some interpretation of thinkers, which does not warrant much thought since I merely take another side than Brutus on some contested issues (such as, Hume's religious perspective). Such qualms don't warrant much thought due to his mentioning them in passing in order to gain a well rounded look at how different views inform the intellectual landscape, and aren't the primary arguments of any one section.

The philosopher Peter Boghossian says it best on his quote that is printed on the book, "Breathtaking erudition. Stranded on a desert isle? Take this book. It will engage, nurture, and stimulate you for a decade."

Top-Tier Graphic Novel

Midnight Nation (inexplicably labeled as Vol. 1, as I don't think there was ever any intention of continuing the story) is an outstanding graphic novel. The art is very good throughout with some memorable images that support the story. But this is really Straczynski's show. As a die-never fan of Babylon 5, I'm happy to follow JMS wherever he'll take me. Though he can at times be a bit wordier than need be—and there's a certain plot point that recalls Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, as well as an aspect of B5—I love his rhythms, sense of humor, and, most of all, his ability to evoke real emotion.

The premise requires a bit of acceptance on the reader's part, but if you give yourself over to some of the far-fetched aspects (even for sci-fi), the reward in the conclusion is well worth it. I didn't think I had connected with the characters to any large degree as the story progressed, but the payoff at the end revealed that these characters really do have an unexpected depth.

The only thing I wish they'd done differently in assembling this collection was if they'd presented the cover images for each issue/chapter in their original location, rather than gathering them at the back of the book. On the one hand, I see why they wanted to keep the story flowing as one continuous story. On the other hand, it felt like reading a novel with the chapter titles deleted. A brief pause to admire the cover art at each break would have been a little better. Nevertheless, this is a great story, well told, with adult themes, intelligence, and wit. It's a great use of the graphic novel format, and I highly recommend it for fans of the genre.

Wow! What an excellently written story.

I was surfing the internet and came across a site that mentioned Midnight Nation as one of the best graphic novels ever written. I came to Amazon and read strong recommendations from other reviewers. I ordered Midnight Nation. I finished it quickly in one sitting.

The story is immediately relatable (one can immediately relate to the story?) and the artwork was impressive in a non-distracting way. It is thought provoking, and the main character is, I feel, an excellent place holder for the reader, allowing the themes in the story to become more important and relevant on a personal level.

Even though I'm very late to the game in regards to how long Midnight Nation has been available, I'll confidently say any time is a good time to pick these volumes up and give them a read.

If I had a complaint, and this is more of an observation, it would be that often times I felt that the story moved along in a jarring manner. This might be intentional, or I could have been reading through it so rapidly that I made it feel that way, but that did stand out to me.

A read to be desired.

It's really not uncommon for me to read an entire graphic novel in one sitting, or two or three. But largely that's due to the fact that there is a space of time that needs to be filled. I don't apply the same thinking to Midnight Nation; I didn't read this in one sitting because I had the time to, I did it because the book actually creates a desire to be read. I know, books don't create things, but one can certainly be inspired by something they read. So I'll say I was inspired to finish it.

It's honestly really hard to write about something so great without wanting to spill all the contents of its pages onto the screen. That's how good with it, I want to share it. When I was done reading it, I didn't really feel like I was OK with it being over... At all. Other customer reviews gave me an impression that this was going to be something I wanted, all wrapped up in one pretty package. I'll just try to keep the context simple.

If you like dense storylines that do not leave you with asking more questions than the ones answered, this is for you. If you have a soft spot for human compassion, and seeing the benefits of enforcing hope, this is for you. If you like to see protagonists overcome extreme adversity, not just externally but internally as well, this is for you. If you like it when your antagonist actually is someone that knows what they are talking about and makes you question the morals, methods, and ethics of the world around you, this is for you. If you like it when character stories aren't stagnant with literary decay, this is for you. If you like philosophical premises with a bit more than a tinge of religious context that isn't offensive, this is for you.

To sum it all up though. Straczynki has unveiled a marvel in this book, and has bought my attention from this day forward. This book is not for those that are interested only in the stereotypical protagonist that lives the simple life of putting the bad guy in jail, bad guy breaks out of jail, good guy puts bad guy back in jail, and then ponders over the implications of what has happened.

This book is thoroughly amazing, and I'm glad it's gotten the great ratings it deserves.

About the Author

Amit Kessel is co-founder of Es-is Technologies Ltd., which designs biocatalysts for the pharmaceutical industry. He also teaches protein biochemistry and biophysics at the Tel Aviv-Yaffo Academic College. During his postdoctoral research at Columbia University, Dr. Kessel focused on various physicochemical aspects of protein–protein interactions at the molecular level.

Nir Ben-Tal is a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Tel-Aviv University. His research in computational biology has involved predicting the three-dimensional structures of transmembrane proteins and developing the ConSurf web server for the detection of functional regions by mapping evolutionary data on protein structures.

Excellent Structural Biology book !

The book aims to provide the reader with a detailed background and current understandings in the field of protein structure and dynamics from the biophysical approach.

As someone who has recently entered the research field of protein dynamics and felt a bit lacking in the necessary background knowledge (especially thermodynamics and thermo-statistics) I really appreciated how broad-based the book is but at the same time manages to stay on point and only introduce relevant principals that apply directly to a better understanding in the field of protein structure and dynamics.

The problem I have with other books in this area is that they usually tackle the subject from a narrow aspect (strictly biochemical or cell-biology) and I could not find a book (or course at my university for that matter) that really managed to integrate all the necessary background and knowledge sources together.

I found the book to be well structured covering the different topics in a logical founded order beginning with explaining what proteins are in general continuing to cover fundamental topics in chemistry and thermodynamics and finally integrating it all into current understating.
Every topic introduced in the book is accompanied with relevant biological examples and color images greatly facilitating comprehension, even the math parts which are detrimental to the understanding of the physics (and unfortunately usually avoided in biology text books) are broken down into easy to digest steps and accompanied with detailed explanations

The book manages to walk the fine line of dealing and explaining sometimes complex topics in an easy to follow manner without being shallow and over simplistic, so both the complete novice and the more experienced reader can find their requirements met.

In short, This book can make a great text book to accompany a protein structure course or, if your are like me taking your first steps in this field or just plain curious an excellent introductory book.

Excellent Textbook for Structural Bioinformatics of Proteins

I have read this book with great interest and have decided to use this textbook in my classes on Structural Bioinformatics at the University of Southern California. Kessel and Ben-Tal have succeeded in putting material together, which I was not able to find in any other textbook. Focused on protein structure, the book combines aspects of structural and computational biology, which makes this a unique contribution. As for the level of detail provided in the book, complicated structural and biophysical aspects are well explained both in words and graphical illustrations. This textbook can therefore be used both in undergraduate and graduate student teaching. The book provides a comprehensive overview on what is known about general principles that determine protein structure, globular proteins, disordered proteins, protein-protein interactions, and in complex with various ligands. It provides guidelines for understanding the energetics of protein folding and stability; it describes models of molecular recognition and allostery as a basis 'for understanding protein-ligand interactions; and it explains biological functionality in these terms.' The book covers protein structure from water-soluble to membrane proteins, from globular to fibrilar proteins and from 'well behaved' to 'natively unstructured' proteins.' The book provides a deep understanding of protein structure, dynamics, 'and function. General principles are made intuitively clear based on 'specific examples. Each example is 'discussed within various contexts throughout the book and eventually 'the reader obtains a wide view on these carefully selected cases.' One interesting feature of the book is the emphasis on diseases. 'This includes explanations of the effects of genetic mutations on 'protein folding, stability, and dynamics as well as a brief introduction to rational drug discovery.' The book connects complicated aspects of structural biology to trivia as much as possible, without deviating too much from the main rout, making it a 'nice read. I can tell that my students liked it a lot.

Great Book Covers All Its Bases

As a graduate student it is often difficult to wade through the combination of unnecessary information and overly specific topics. "Introduction to Proteins" is a great book that provides the basic information needed to delve deep into the importance of protein structure and function without getting bogged down in overly specific details. The illustrations are interesting and colorful as well as relevant. This book covers topics ranging from secondary structure hydrogen bonding patterns to what force field you may want to use for your molecular dynamics simulations. Overall this a great book for any student looking to get a little deeper into protein structure and function without sacrificing clarity or background.

I FORGOT WHAT A WONDERFUL BOOK THIS IS! I HAD FULL SETS OF SHEL SILVERSTEIN'S BOOKS, WHICH I GAVE TO MY KIDS WHEN THEY GREW UP..... NOW, ITS TIME TO PASS THESE WORDS OF SIMPLE PLEASURE AND JOY ALONG TO A NEW GENERATION SO MANY ADULTS FORGET THAT THEY HAVE A CHILD INSIDE OF THEM! THAT CHILD NEEDS TO COME OUT! Need a short trip away from reality?

I'm embarrassed to say that I had heard of author Shel Silverstein and had also heard of "Where the Sidewalk Ends" BUT had never picked up a copy and read it. A friend recently quoted from the book which stirred my curiosity as I'm always on the lookout for great books for my 8 year old great niece. I bought the book based on what my friend said as well as reviews posted on Amazon.com. I always read the books I get for my G niece before giving them to her as I so enjoy kids and young adults literature as well as what I normally read. I'm half way through "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and already know that I will be buying more of Mr. Silverstein's books for my G niece. The poems are creative and humorous with the drawings completing the "story". I know my niece will enjoy the book and probably her parents too! This is the type of book to be read again and again whenever you need a short trip away from reality.

I salute you, Shel Silverstein.

It seems to be very trendy to solicit books instead of a card for baby showers these days and this is my "Go To". Every time. It actually annoys me to see someone else bring the same book to a shower. That's how much of my "go to" it is. I feel selfishly possessive like I wrote it myself. I loved his books when I was younger, I read them to my own kids, I pass them on for others... You should do the same. Unless you're going to be at a shower with me.
